  • Humidity for Chinese water dragons is a topic that is heavily emphasized in regards to their captive care. In this video I go over how to create a "humidity cycle" that will allow your water dragons to have a more natural "routine" pertaining to humidity levels throughout the day (including nighttime hours!).
I hope this video is informative and helpful to y'all!

Is this a correct observation: the only thing you are "doing" is change out the water and spray down the enclosure every day. Then since the enclosure has a solid top, it naturally moves through this "humidity cycle," including reaching 99% at night?
I'm asking as a new adult cwd owner who has created a diy wood enclosure from a wardrobe, and am having a hard time holding humidity. I do have holes in the top for my heat/uvb lights. I plan to close the top and replace with lights set on the inside (based on your temperature and usb videos). should this be enough to take care of the humidity?

      Correct!
I have no top ventilation to trap in the humidity.
DO NOTE THOUGH: that my enclosures have cross ventilation to allow ample airflow and prevent stagnation.
Do not make your enclosure airtight as that’ll encourage mold and bacterial growth which will be detrimental to your Chinese water dragon.
(Live plants such as pothos help a lot!)

What substrate do you use for your water dragons? Right now I'm using Zilla jungle mix and I just finished thier new pvc enclosure. Thier old enclosure was 24×24×36, thier new enclosure is 6ft (W) x 4ft (H) x 3ft (D). So I'm going to be using a lot more substrate, thanks.

      Hello Eric,
I typically use ReptiChip: Premium Coconut Substrate.
It holds humidity well, very cost effective for the amount you get in a block, and I think it looks nice while being easy to clean.
Since you mentioned you have a pair: it is crucial that you offer the Zilla Jungle Mix in the form of a nest box to ensure your female will have a place to lay and deposit eggs.
Let me know if you have further questions.

Can I use black walnut branches for my Chinese water dragons ( if they been sterilized)?

im just seeing this, i just purchased a water dragon of my own, love him/her already😂. what is that on your sliding glass doors? and does that help maintain humidity in his cage? I need tips on maintaining my humidity. I am going to buy some live plants and add that to hopefully help, but recently cut off some of the ventilation as well and it did help somewhat. I just need a few tips on raising him/her if you dont mind sharing a few please.

      Hello,
So 1: that is white paper covering about 80% of the glass panels. This is because Chinese water dragons do not understand clear barriers. If I had plain glass at the front, he would rub his nose and damage his face.
As for humidity: live plants can help. However the best way to ensure humidity levels are met is having a proper enclosure: PVC and Plywood enclosures are my go to.
Anything with a screen top will make holding humidity damn near impossible.
I’d say for now: cover as much of the screen section as possible and prepare to upgrade to a more appropriate enclosure at the lizard grows. Solid topped cages work wonders for holding heat and humidity.

I’ve definitely been on TH-cam for a bit.
I’m happy to report that I still have that female from the original build video six years ago!
      Thank you for the support!

What are your thoughts on something like a MistKing system set up on timers? And did you get rid of the basking shelf to promote Ozzie to do more climbing and exercise?

    • @AlexsAgamids

MistKing systems would make a fantastic option for maintaining ambient humidity. I personally do not use them, but at other facilities I've worked at: they are easy to setup and program to maintain an adequate humidity cycle. The ONLY con I have with the MistKing systems is that the spray water is very fine, so water dragons often have a hard time feeling the urge to "drink" from such fine droplets. Whereas with a handsprayer/hose I can have large droplets of running water which they seem to drink from more readily.
As for the ledges, I removed them because I've noticed in the past few months he has been hardly using the shelf space. So I figured I'd try some thin and thick branches to encourage him to work his muscles more. He has definitely seemed to like the change as I catch him on even the thin perches quite frequently.
