      it depends on the individual parents themselves, u cannot say its something only asian parents say, its extremely stereotypical to say that, each individual parents parenting style is different

    Also, the boys part was hilarious.

    My dad wants me to be either a accountant or a Banker and here I am dreaming of performing in stages and holding that microphone but since that seems really impossible I thought i'd go with plan B and become a Psychologist but he thinks I'll "become mad while working with mad people", which I find extremely rude for him to say because it's not actually mad people there's just something going on in their life that makes them behave that way and in fact I, myself have been going through depression because of all the drama with my parents and wanted to help people like me but I can't tell them that reason because they simply dont understand, which is why I donr tell them stuff in the first place

      chi chi i'm pretty much in the same situation... but what i realized is that you should focus on things you like. maybe make a short break from your studies to figure out what truly makes you happy?

    • @charchar3one
      @charchar3one 9 ปีที่แล้ว +4

      chi chi I totally feel you! I was studying teaching at Sydney Uni last year and I dreaded every single day of it. As much as a I love teaching and imparting knowledge; that wasn't for me. Telling my parents was terrifying but in the end, they supported me- EVEN if it meant dropping out from one of the 'top' universities here, for one apparently not on the same level (I beg to differ lol).
      One year later, I'm studying Business at my new uni (macquarie ftw) and I can say that I'm loving it; even to the point that its holidays and I miss school haha! It's a big and 'scary' thing to make a change; but there's no better time than now :D

I HATE IT.. im still looking for something else that will suit me better, i havent found anything.. but i will hopefully :)

      @whyspirs 9 ปีที่แล้ว +3

    My parents have never really told me what to do when I get older, but everyone expected me to do something with art.
    But now I'm on a path to become a nurse, and then do art on my free time, since I'm not at the point where I could make a living of only my art.
    We'll see where it takes me, but I'm currently working at a nursing home for elderly!

    • @phuongan9738
      @phuongan9738 8 ปีที่แล้ว +8

      Lily Arouche But you won't be happy forever, there will always be a time when you want to give up with their relationship. Being married isn't a proof that you guys will stay together forever, they'll divorce if they are really unhappy with each other.
      And at some point in your life you'll take up some other jobs, dancing isn't the only job. And loving it doesn't mean that you can survive with it, unless you're talented then it won't be a problem.
      You see, ask an adult 'Do you you used to love your job?'
      After they answer, yes ask them 'Have you ever hated your job before?' Trust me, there's no such jobs that you will love forever, you've only seen the advantages of the job but not the disadvantage.

    i'm a bit late to this video but i've been at summer school.. anyway this video is incredibly inspiring bc all i've ever wanted to do is be a TH-camr. but my very asian parents literally told me i'm not pretty or talented enough to make anything of it. i did it behind their backs, which makes creating good quality videos hard, but now i'm realizing maybe they were right bc it really hasn't taken off. as i'm in high school (& doing great!) my situation isn't the same as yours was but I'm glad you shared it bc maybe if I continue making videos - although in secret - my channel might amount to one as amazing as yours❤️❤️

It feels so unreal to see another person, someone who I look at for inspiration, has gone through this ridiculously difficult decision. You were able to talk about this in such a jovial manner and it really shows how happy you are with your decision. Thank you for posting this, it really means so much to me to know that I can do this too! Your fan from Cali

    I had this experience right after high school, my parents wanted me to be a nurse. And I went to nursing school for a year and just hated it. Then I grew the balls to tell my parents I hated it and I took graphic designing.
    You were spot on how my parents are with everything. I got a boyfriend during junior year and I was focused on school but he came to my life and I love him. I'm still with him and it had been close to 7 years.
    Parents are just there to guide you, and I think everyone has the ability to create out their life. And everyone deserves to just be happy.

    And then there's me, I'm Asian but my parents let me decide what I wanted to be. Yeah the grades was always on a look out, but my parents were pretty laid back. They let me hang out with boys ever since junior year, I got my first boyfriend at 12, which was pretty child like and ended quickly and surprisingly didn't affect me at all, and now I'm 16 and have a wonderful bf and work and go to a high standard college/uni and my parents, they just support me through the way. Plus giving me the benefit of the doubt of getting married first before the *adult stuff* even thought I don't want children or get married *I think*.

    When I was in high school I had pretty much decided I was going to be a graphic designer because I felt like it was a logical option since I had a major in art in high school and I was "the artsy one" in my family. I did a short internship to see what the job would be like and I hated it. It made me realize that for a while I had known that I didn't want to do it, but this is what made me decided to give up that idea. So instead I studied hard to more years so that I could go to university, and I'm now in arts, doing something I love :)

    It was totally inspiring. I have the similar story like yours. I finished my bachelor degree of French in University in Beijing, influenced by my Mom. By the time I didn't even know that was her idea instead of mine, she really manipulated my mind. Then I worked in the world's largest company for three years and felt so comfortable with nice pay and super friendly working environment. I was afraid to change my career because I have too much to loose, even though visual effects is what I really want to do. But last year I finally quitted my job and got accepted my the best animation school in Canada. So happy. My life for now is miserable since I spend all of my saving on my tuition fee and the program is very intense that I don't have time to work. but I believe everything will get better. My parents mainly want me to get good grades, a good job that I want (preferably high monthly income lol) they want me to be a bit more healthy (exercise and control eating habits) and marry someone sometime in the future. The things they want me to do will basically become something I need to do in the future. I guess I have a different viewpoint since my parents are not really strict about me studying. I can study when I want to. They only want me to focus on studying if my grades are terrible and maybe, get my grades a little higher than average. But i'm not dumb, I want to be someone they'd be proud of, so of course I'll study on my own so they won't worry about my grades. So of course I'll take care of my health and I'll worry about theirs. So to those overly strict parents, please do keep in mind that your child *can* think and make their own choices. They just have to mature amd realize their potential. After all, in a couple more years they'd be adults too. Unless you plan to make them like lifeless puppets and robots of course, then you can break them all you want and it will forever be your fault.

    Well, it is not only Asian parents..Actually here (in Europe) it depends on what kind of people are the parents but they all want their kids to do well. So, if your parents are well educated and successful - the pressure is bigger. In my case - my grandparents hoped that I become a doctor but my parents let me choose what I like. I am very grateful for that - to find out what I really want to do they allowed me to study dance, visit singing classes, learn foreign languages, play musical instruments and whatever I was interested in. :)

    I was born into an Asian family too but one that had a very odd expectation from me and my brother. Of course they had very high expectations and they forced me from a very young age to learn piano, swimming and 3 different languages (including English since English was not my mother tongue). I was a very fast learner and I did everything my parents wanted me to but my family fell apart and a lot of things happened which caused my parents to divorce. After I moved into a much smaller house and I lived with only my mother and my brother. My mother never graduated high school so her expectations are not too high and my brother is 9 years older than me so he seems more like a guardian than a sibling. My brother was also specifically ordered by my dad to look after me in his place so the standards and expectations stayed the same while we starved some days and struggled to get by. My family told me that it was ok to do anything I wanted as long as I got good grades so I told them I wanted to be a lawyer. I meant it whole heartedly, I was very interested in law. Their reaction is that they laughed in my face, told me I would never be able to do it, my grades aren't good enough, I probably won't get higher than a B, a lot of things like that. So I became VERY angsty and extremely rebellious because every day I had someone around me telling me I was worthless. Not only that I was also bullied a lot at school for my ethnicity. So my teenage life consisted of a lot of abuse from every angle. My only escape was the internet and also games. Because of this escape I felt so strongly about I wanted to make a place where others can escape to when they have no where to go. I wanted to make worlds. That is how I decided I wanted to become a games artist/designer. After deciding that at the age of 15/16, I scraped past year 10 and year 11 with only good enough grades. The way I did that was I IGNORED every negativity around me and focused on one thing. Get the qualified grades to get into the college I need to get into. Since the expectations to get in were not high in my city, I was able to do it but it was not easy for me because filtering out all the negativity in your life while trying to focus on exams and studying is almost impossible. It was extremely difficult for me. I eventually got into the college I wanted to get into and I was studying Level 3 Games Development for 2 years and I graduated with Triple Distinction*. That is a straight A+ through all subjects with full points. I was so happy about this I bought the results home to my mother and the first thing she asked me was "Did you want money for this?" and I was so upset I almost cried because all I wanted was for her to be happy I finally did what they wanted me to do and as I answered "No, I just wanted you to know" she then looked at me up and down and said "It's expected of you." I mean at that point I didn't give a shit what she thought anymore whether she was happy or sad or proud I knew the moment I got my grades my entire world was in my hands and my hands only and as long as I am proud and happy with the results that's all that matters. I guess the advice from my story is really know what your passion is and really go for it even if it's an absolute sand storm. Another advice is to make yourself happy than others happy. If you make others happy that's even better but remember you are the most important person in the world, in YOUR world. Don't let anyone control what you do and do everything for yourself because you will have to live with yourself until the day you die and meeting other's expectations only give you the short term satisfaction but if you are happy with yourself then you will be satisfied until the day you leave this world.

    I totally feel you! I had to tell my parents as I was graduating from university that I was turning down my acceptance to medical school because I hated it and didn't want to be a doctor! 😱 It was the scariest moment to tell my parents who had been gearing me up for my entire life to go to medical school that I was going to reject it. But it turned out okay because it was what I had to do. You have to go and do whatever it is that you feel called to and don't let someone stand between you and your dreams! You can be anything and do anything you are called to if you just go! There is only one you in all of the world and time, so go out there and do what only you can do! Your parents will always love you even if they are not happy with your choices at first. Love them and forgive them. They only want to help and do their best. So do the same and love them as you do your best in life!

    I had sort of the opposite experience with my parents. They never tried to push me in any direction, and while the rhetoric was always that I should go ahead and pursue my dreams, they never helped me figure out what my dream was. I pretty much decided that after college I would just get any job and plod along with that until I got married.
    To be fair, my parents never told me that full time wife was a great career goal, but they never discouraged it either. My Mom talked a lot about being independent and not letting myself be trampled on, but she didn't know how to teach me the tools to achieve that.
    My moment of change came about a year after graduation. I had left the art industry, which is what I got my degree in, because I wasn't cut out for the competitive environment or for working so hard for barely any pay and no real passion for the work. I liked it, but not enough.
    I was living with my first ever boyfriend after only one year of dating, and working as a nanny full time to pay my rent and student loans. I started to realise that I had settled myself into purgatory--waiting for my boyfriend to decide what to do with his life so that I could mold mine to fit into and support his. This put strain on an already rocky relationship, which ended right after our second anniversary.
    I knew I needed to make a change and, for probably the first time in my life, break out from the momentum that was directing my future.
    I took an internship in publishing, and although that hasn't turned out to be my dream, it was working towards that goal that got me to move to New York, is the reason I met my now boyfriend, helped me build a social group very quickly in a brand new city, and gave me my first "real" job. It also gave me the courage to leave that job when I realised that it was only fine.
    I still don't think I've landed on my life's purpose, but I've taught myself how to break free from momentum and redirect my path when it seems to be leading to complacency.
    It's made my relationship stronger too. We both refuse to let issues fester until they retire into "that's just how it is." Facing relationship problems is always scary, whether it's disagreeing about who should go to whom's apartment or learning how to express ourselves in a way the other can really understand.
    I watch some of my younger friends going through the same "quarter life crisis," making many of the same mistakes I did. It turns out you can't really warn someone about the pitfalls of your early 20s, but you can be there to give them a hand and a hug. The best advice I ever got was to "pay it forward." It's so easy to do and it can make a huge impact on someone's life. It may help you figure out your own priorities too.
    Thanks for the videos Wengie, and for the real talk. I know so many people will learn so much from you.

    My parents are Indian, but they want me to become either a doctor, lawyer, or dentist. I told my mom I wanted to be a makeup artist, but she said to stop being a "disgrace" and I'm like wtf
