There used to be a whole plethora of fellas like Fred about, in England or for that matter America. Times have changed and I'm not sure if for the better. We were self sufficient, brave and inventive. Happier times!
I've watched docs about Dibnah. Quite the guy. Steam is still king, if you ask me. I have one engine that is going to power the blacksmith shop, and need to go pick up a traction engine here before winter arrives.

Nice shout out to Fred - he is from my home town back in the UK, and was a 'star' well before the BBC series in those parts. Often used to see him driving around in his landrover or in his steam roller 'Betsy' at local events. Never got to see him fell a chimney, though my dad saw several. Absolutely fearless and quite the character!
Bayonets- it always amazed me that the Russians - NOT the Japanese, Germans, Italians or English or Americans- but the Russians, would design a bayonet multi-tool. I know the Swiss and later, Germans, offered a sawtooth back on some of theirs, and eventually, we in the US copied the wire cutter feature.
Dibnah was great, I'll probably never tire of watching him ladder a chimney 😅 Incidentally, they were called steeplejacks because originally they were employed to climb up to the top of the spires on churches and cathedrals to fix the rooves and weather vanes - the industrial stuff came much later. As for bayonets not being sharp, I've a couple of old Lee Enfield bayonets and an even older Chassepot one and they are pretty sharp (but then, they were my grandfather's war souvenirs so I've no doubt that they got used for what they wer e designed for) The box turned out great, best idea for a gift 😊
Yes- Almost all soldiers put an edge on their bayonets- There was lots of time to kill between skirmishes so sharpening a bayonet was the perfect way to kill time. 😃👍
YAAY Jerry and Fred was 3 or 4 pieces of work. I think of some of the U.S. daredevils but Fred did stuff that'd make the so-called tough guys pee their pants every day! And the rebuild a steam roller and pulling his camper, drive it to a meet-up for steam machines. Amazing man. Happy week John and God Bless
Fred had another method, he’d bore the hole at the bottom and start demo at the top, sending the bricks down though the center of the stack so the so they could be wheel barreled away. No fire or dynamite.

I spent considerable time watching Fred going through his job and his hobbies. Quite the guy. I'm not afraid of heights. Those lashed together ladders and stubbed in board platforms are a bit more than I would like. Takes me back to the days of working on the 80 foot Cupola stack at the foundry. Changing water lines in the winter wasn't fun. The steam lorry was fascinating. Jerry is a lucky man to have friends like you. I had a bayonet from the Spanish just before WWII. I picked it up at the Army Navy store in Three Rivers, MI in about 1973. When I built the Harley Trike into a chopper I used the bayonet as the shifter handle. I made a couple mounts on the shifter so the blade edge faced the seat post. When I sold the trike I kept the bayonet. It disappeared along with a couple other knives and various bric a brac about the time we had a garage sale. We had a discussion about yours, mine, and ours. 👺😎
I watched every piece of footage I could find featuring Frank a few years ago, there were two or three other notorious steeple jacks around the same time but I can’t think of their names. I’m just enamored with that time period in the U.K.

What a coincidence (yet again) .... I've been tasked with making a box for a WWII German Wehrmacht dagger that my son-in-law inherited. So often you come up with the darndest things, and so timely ! .... It's weird ! ..... Thanks tons for a couple great box-making tips and ideas.
Great box and a lovely gift! I really enjoy going in the attic. I had one of the Delta saws but I passed it on when I bought the compound miter saw recently. Very handy tools!

I just watched a video of Fred on FB. It was made by the BBC in 1970 and it was his first documentary. Or so it was claimed in the title. I have known about him for years but what a coincidence to watch it just before I watched your video.
Love the bayonet collection. I am 68 and have collected knives all my life. My ex missus used to ask "How many knives does one man need?". My answer was always the same "Just one more."

Hear, hear! I think I've mentioned this before, but my late grandfather was a big fan of Mr Dibnah because he was from the same part of the country. Now I can't think of him without thinking of my grandad. "Did you like that?" Yes Fred, I did!

In my working days I did a lot of ladder climbing and scaffold work, but was always amazed and nervous to watch him man-handling those planks way up near heaven, BY HIMSELF! He was definitely a man's man. All the aerial acrobatics he did and never fell, but was instead taken out by cancer. He used to talk about the wind when he was up there, and jokingly say, "one wrong step and it'll be half a day with the undertaker"! Well, he cheated the undertaker for all those years. Rest in peace sir.
I remember barrels of bayonets of all types at the Surplus Store in the early 60’s. So many to choose from often for .50c and at the time it wasn’t important where it came from. You made the display box look way to easy, and the salvaged plexiglass comes in handy. Great job! (catching up on last weeks videos after a week of travel)
Amazing show! Brought back an AK bayonet from Iraq with a war souvenir chit. I was in Habbaniya and they were cleaning out a warehouse full of aircraft parts and they tossed out all these MIG and Sukhoi gages. They denied those chits though. We had a guy who would sharpen blades and he put a razor edge on my AK blade.

I think it's so cool that you know about working class heroes like Fred Dibnah, I feel the same way about the US steel/ironworkers and the men who built the skyscrapers in the early 20th century and the NYFD/NYPD were the best in the world. How anyone could put so much trust in those wooden ladders, planking, and ropes is beyond me because I don't even trust a new ladder. I especially liked to watch him work in his shop behind his home where he was sinking the mine shaft and working with his steam engines. Very interesting and intelligent fellow. You're one cool dude to get a nice bayonet like that and then build a very nice display box for your friend! I got one for my M1 Carbine a few years ago for I think 10 bucks at the flea market. Also got one for an M1 Garand kicking around somewhere. Also have various knives that I have both made and bought over the years, but my favorite that I have is probably the Camillus USMC fighting knife with the leather stacked handle, complete with original leather sheath. I like to Blacksmith now and then so making knives was only a natural thing to do. Great video as always Scout!
John, tell your old buddy happy birthday for me - an old boy scout the same age as you two. I loved scouts, and was lucky to be part of a troop that had excellent and dedicated leaders. Half had done service in WW II, and the other half in Korea. Farmers, ranchers, a builder, a doctor and a lawyer. Among other things, I learned so much about hiking, climbing, camping, and field survival that even now my knowledge and experience outstrips the “experts” in outdoor stores and most pro outfitters I meet. I volunteered heavily while my son went through scouting, and when he has kids I hope he does. Great memories!
Fred Dinah was a great Character, I grew up watching him demolishing things but he was equally (if not more) interested in preserving the past ! As you say there's load of great material out there about him. Interesting overview of your non-collection of bayonets, I have a British WWI version in the garage kept out of reach of my younger visitors. I remember a friend of mine bringing his Grandfather's bayonet in to school when we were learning about the war aged 9, and he took great pleasure in explaining that the scoop in the blade was to let the blood flow so you could more easily remove the blade !
Fred ran his home workshop using steam and Victorian engineering, He was a fountain of knowledge. Years ago i was driving through a little village called Holmefith and outside a pub was a steam engine and Fred was there having a pint and a chat to folk. Much missed. One of his Jobs he took on was to demolish a chimney brick by brick.Stood on top of a chimney swinging a sledge hammer with no safety harness hahaha
Fred was amazing. When he said "these towers were built with steam" it changed the way i understood these amazing manmade structures. It is hard to articulate, but the moment he said that i immediatly understood his love of chimneys and steam engines. What a guy. Great gift, the box is first class. Cheers
I have that same Swiss bayonet next to my bed. Mine came off a 1957 vintage Swiss rifle, but I don't remember the model. Also next to me is a reproduction USMC Ka Bar style knife made by Camillus. Also I have a lock box with a --------------------------------------
Amazing attic! I could spend days up there. Reminds me of my grandparent's attic that had so many treasures in it. Love the box. I have a handyman business and business is crazy slow now because people are waiting for their tax returns and laying low after the holidays. Maybe I'll try making some boxes and selling them online!
Fred was an incredible worker. In the north country the older ones remember this is time when the Edmond Fitzgerald went down 48 years ago. Don't let young person tell 60 is old, at least none of us past that think so. Our joints and scars might try to say different but we don't listen. I have the folding machete. It's heavy. I have a partialy refabbed WW1 British bayonet around here that was being made into a dagger but I never finished it. I reworked an old beat up Mark II into a all around sheath knife. I would pass up all the rest I have and take it with me in a disaster. I have to becareful as some states are not happy about the upper sharpened tip.

That scabbard (hard = scabbard / leather = sheath) is a M8-A1 due to the steel hanger hooks that attached it to a utility belt. The original M8 only had a web belt loop.
I cant believe the timing with this! I just yesterday bought a ww2 German dress bayonet by accident on ebay. I was forced to pay $750! yup, dumb move clicking by accident. I wanted it but not for that much. Anyway great collection. love to see your knife collection!
I have watched most if not all the Fred Dibnah videos. That is a job I could never do. Those early videos with him tying and attaching the ladders as he went up are incredible.

I have a Swiss STG 57 myself with the green canvas frog. Beautiful bayonet keep it mounted on a fake STG stand with a few others.

Interesting overview of your non-collection of bayonets, I have a British WWI version in the garage kept out of reach of my younger visitors. I remember a friend of mine bringing his Grandfather's bayonet in to school when we were learning about the war aged 9, and he took great pleasure in explaining that the scoop in the blade was to let the blood flow so you could more easily remove the blade !

Fred ran his home workshop using steam and Victorian engineering, He was a fountain of knowledge.
Years ago i was driving through a little village called Holmefith and outside a pub was a steam engine and Fred was there having a pint and a chat to folk.
Much missed.
One of his Jobs he took on was to demolish a chimney brick by brick.Stood on top of a chimney swinging a sledge hammer with no safety harness hahaha

Fred was amazing. When he said "these towers were built with steam" it changed the way i understood these amazing manmade structures. It is hard to articulate, but the moment he said that i immediatly understood his love of chimneys and steam engines. What a guy. Great gift, the box is first class. Cheers

I have that same Swiss bayonet next to my bed. Mine came off a 1957 vintage Swiss rifle, but I don't remember the model. Also next to me is a reproduction USMC Ka Bar style knife made by Camillus. Also I have a lock box with a --------------------------------------

The Camillus folding machete was intended for the WW2 bomber pilot's survival kit thus the folding of it. There were three different makers.
Amazing attic! I could spend days up there. Reminds me of my grandparent's attic that had so many treasures in it. Love the box. I have a handyman business and business is crazy slow now because people are waiting for their tax returns and laying low after the holidays. Maybe I'll try making some boxes and selling them online!
Bayonets are not exactly rare, it funny that they're selling for so much now.............We took down and industrial brick smoke stack once by hand.
Love the old bayonets, I have many. Miss the old Army Navy Surplus Stores of the day. Now it's all on line and super expensive.

Fred was an incredible worker. In the north country the older ones remember this is time when the Edmond Fitzgerald went down 48 years ago. Don't let young person tell 60 is old, at least none of us past that think so. Our joints and scars might try to say different but we don't listen. I have the folding machete. It's heavy. I have a partialy refabbed WW1 British bayonet around here that was being made into a dagger but I never finished it. I reworked an old beat up Mark II into a all around sheath knife. I would pass up all the rest I have and take it with me in a disaster. I have to becareful as some states are not happy about the upper sharpened tip.

That scabbard (hard = scabbard / leather = sheath) is a M8-A1 due to the steel hanger hooks that attached it to a utility belt. The original M8 only had a web belt loop.

I cant believe the timing with this! I just yesterday bought a ww2 German dress bayonet by accident on ebay. I was forced to pay $750! yup, dumb move clicking by accident. I wanted it but not for that much. Anyway great collection. love to see your knife collection!

I have watched most if not all the Fred Dibnah videos. That is a job I could never do. Those early videos with him tying and attaching the ladders as he went up are incredible.
