It is so cool that a subscriber had more info about your lamp. At the time you got it I wondered if it was all there but what do I know? Yes, please find suitable shades. I bet there are repro or vintage shades out there that would work. BTW, based on the pictures, it looks to me like there is a frosted panel at the bottom of the fixture to diffuse light and conceal the center light bulb when looking up at the fixture. That might account for the holes punched in the center cone you showed us earlier. They would vent light bulb heat. Regardless, you deserve alot of praise for bringing that cool lamp back to life. Thanks. As for the ultrasonic cleaner, it would really reduce the tedium of cleaning the insides o f about 35 really filthy Mossberg sockets I acquired last year. I'm doing it all by hand right now.

Whoa that second shade looks like something from Metropolis so I would shoot for that one. It will dim the light some but those were not made for reading or close work. There were other lights for that. There was a TH-cam channel from a mechanic in Wisconsin who did amazing work and he used mineral spirits in his parts washer. Although not cheap parts washer cleaners are much more expensive and not easy to find in real rural areas and when you don't have somebody changing it every month. By the way those ultrasonic cleaners were used ages ago to clean glasses. When you had your eyes checked they would take you glasses and check the prescription and brought them back really clean. We cleaned jewelry using water and adding amonia. Cleaned the stone settings perfectly.

Dale's Workshop has had good success with the Evapo-Rust in his ultrasonic. It would be interesting to compare room temp vs heated and "buzzed" Evapo-Rust on two similarly rusted items.

I bought a HF Ultrasonic Cleaner years ago. I bought a digital timer that I plug the unit into. On the HF unit the timer controls the vibration but not the temperature.
After leaving it on and melting the plastic basket I decided a timer was the way to go. The heater will evaporate the water then overheat the tank and can damage the ultrasonic sending unit.

It is best to use a wire tray with the US cleaners as you don't want to put anything directly on the bottom of the tank. The idea is to suspend the items above the bottom where the US transducers are attached. I routinely use this as SC demonstrated with organic solvents of various types in secondary containers. This will also accelerate the derusting action of Evaporust to a fraction of the time otherwise required.

John, great video. Our company got a sonic cleaner back in 1994 and it worked so well, we made all kinds of baskets for it so very tiny stuff could be cleaned. I knew when they got affordable I had to have one. I got two now and wowser! I dont know about gas tho. I have 2 of the knife sets like you have from "BARLOW" KNIFE CO. one with a white handle and one with a black one and they both are NOS and still have the oil paper with them.

Used an ultrasonic cleaner for years. Don't let anything rest on the bottom: use the basket. Also dont let anything hang part way out of the water. I've had metal score at the waterline and had plastic melt OUT of the water. It's just the vibration that heats it to melting. And-no bubbles. The first thing that happens is all oxygen is driven out of the water which is good because things won't rust (right away). Have fun!

An ultrasonic is very good for brass shell casings for pistol and rifle hand loaders. It won't make them shine like polished brass, but it will be squeaky clean inside and out.

    Hi John,
I guess my comment about the glass sconces was right on the button. When I worked at Pitney Bowes we had a bunch of ultrasonic equipment. We did ultrasonic welding of plastic. It also was used with Freon, which I’m sure was better than gas. Not sure if Freon is flammable. We used Freon all over the place. It would clean off anything. Lots of car parts ran through the shop on the night shift. I had an oil pan for my Camaro Chrome plated. Very cool video. I have an ultrasonic cleaner and a parts vibrator. We used to vibrate castings and parts in a water and smooth stone media. I’m so blessed to have worked at Pitney for the experience I got. How about a smelly craftsman screw driver?? Be a good video. Great video today.

Some are hundreds of pounds solid brass, solid gold, use name brand crystals like Tiffany etc. I know I've come across light fixtures we've hung that were 30, 60k plus and I only know because I got curious and looked them up. Imagine being there hanging a few hundred pound light fixture and spending hours attaching thousands of crystals and the fixture costs more than your car lol wild. An ultrasonic cleaner *can* blow you up if you use a bunch of flammable stuff. The transducers mounted to the tub can get super hot. Hot enough to melt off their mounts.

    ScoutCrafter,
If you're crazy enough to clean using gasoline why not try benzene or 1-1-1 TCE? Out of curiosity how do you plan on disposing of the dirty gas?
Time for a sea story. Once upon a time, a crew member cleaned a dirty gear in a can that had a 1/4 cup of TCE. After cleaning the gear he dumped the dirty TCE into a waste oil tank. In turn, the waste oil tank was emptied into the cargo slop tank. The tank was loaded with oil and was eventually pumped to a refinery with the cargo. TCE is water soluble, so it mixed with water that was in the tank. When the tanker arrived at the loading port it discharged the water ashore. During routine sampling of the water parts per billion of TCE was detected. I was elected to explain to the EPA how a 1/4 cup of TCE found its way to detection. In the end, we received a mandatory fine, and could no longer by liquid TCE, only aerosol.
Growing up gasoline was the solvent of choice. Many a bike chain, and other parts, were cleaned with gasoline and a toothbrush.
    Enjoy your ultrasonic cleaner.
    Bob

      @ScoutCrafter  11 วันที่ผ่านมา +1

Bob- Getting rid of chemicals is always a problem, here in the city they have days you can go and drop anything off. For my 3 ounces of gas I will use it as a fire starter on some old branches I burn every so often. 3 ounces is much easier to burn off then 5 gallons! 🫣😂👍

If you use flammable solvents in amounts more than a thimble full, always use them outside. Vapor from solvents with low vapor pressures and heavier than air like gasoline will travel along the floor in still air like the vapors in horror movies. You now have an explosive mixture that can travel the length of your shop and only needs the tiniest spark to set it off.

Just think what that would do for dentures!
EDIT: Ok. I was shopping for an untrasonic cleaner and OMG! They make one for dentures. Made me laugh.

Yes! From what I hear every dentist has one now for equipment and people love them for dentures! 😃👍

It is better to use a plastic bag or plastic container. Glass bottles will dampen the oscillations from the ultrasonic cleaner so reduces the effect of the cleaning. Steves Small Engines has a video showing this. As someone else commented, it is best to use the basket to keep the items off the bottom of the tank.
Very interesting that the lamp is so collectable. Lots of options for the glass shades.
    Dave.

Actually Dave it’s the opposite- Plastic in this case is worse than glass. It goes against common sense but Glass works better in the machines.

Use the basket, chances are that the small coils can come loose and you will break the machine. Love your videos ❤

Ultrasonics are in every dental office across the country. They place all instruments in the bath to remove the yuck before they sterilize them. Dentists also use a product in the ultrasonic called stain and tartar remover for calculus on dentures/and prosthetics. It works really well. That or vinegar might work well in your cut away valve projects for hard water buildup. I have wondered if an Ultrasonic would make Evaporust work better or faster using the jar method. Could you test it sometime? Thanks

It’s amazing how the cost of the cleaners have dropped over the last decade. 😃👍
