the secret route's music is always a variation on the music of the original level, it always sounded more scary and mysterious to me :)

Ah, memories, green gem stumped me for a while, then I got it by mistake... best gaming memory I've had, other than beating both games 105%.
This was such an amazing game. Difficult to find gems all obtained by clever little clues, I had the absolute most fun finding these when I was a nipper. Crash 2 will always have a special place in my heart. Crash 1 is also amazing for the difficulty (try getting perfect on Toxic Waste to see what I mean) and just generally brilliance. I did like warped but didn't have the same magical feel as 1 and 2 for me, plus all of the novelty levels were really boring( especially the swimming levels)

When i was younger, i did the blue gem the hard way. By using the slide to jump over those boxes. Yes it's possible.

What I really like about Crash 2 is how the colored Gems are actually hidden by real secrets that you have to figure out/notice. In Crash 3 most colored Gems are simply gotten by completing the Death Route on some levels, which feels kinda lame to me, not saying 3 is a bad game, it's still great.
Nykusu I agree. It always felt great to discover secrets in Crash 2, though some like knowing to jump into the pit in Unbearable to get all crates I'm not sure if I would've figured out except by accident! Crash 3 is more gimmicky with the relics, water, and air levels IMO. The powers you get after each boss also seem cheap.
I think Crash 2 secrets are bullshit that forces you to use a guide.

+tsangpogorepe I agree, I'm glad the N sane trilogy actually gives you hints or implications to certain colour gem secrets. The hints might not be perfect but's better than nothing. In fact those hints helped me into finding the green gem.
7 years later, but hard agree. It's the best Crash in that regard, even counting It's About Time. There isn't a single best moment in a Crash Bandicoot game than realizing that the Nitro crates weren't jumping. lol
Can't believe how amazing this game looks all these years later. I know this is a higher resolution, but it is still an amazing graphical feat.

If go up to do the bonus round and fall off the side, you will get more time to get the yellow gem. Also when getting the blue gem, after you collect the gem. Go back out and fall in the pit it will take to. beginning so you don't have to go back into the same level twice. You can do it all at once.
The blue one was the biggest pain to figure out. I played that level around 20 or more times, jumped onto every platform, and jumped INTO every pit. Then one night, while I was laying in bed, I realized what that x/0 crate at the end meant. I kicked myself for months
The secret collectables in this game are straight up BS, The N sane trilogy actually gave you hints on the other hand.
@Jake Clement I’m probably gonna sound like a grandpa, but they didn’t give you hints in the original game. There probably were TH-cam videos out back then, but I didn’t start watching them until much later, and I rarely ever read guidebooks, so I was pretty much left with “Hmm.. I wonder what’ll if I do this..”
@@djmocha7 TH-cam didn't exist until 2005 so there definitely weren't any videos for these games when they were new back in the 90s. Internet access wasn't nearly as common back then, lots of people relied on magazines or strategy guides.
I'll guess the Blue one was found out by people who wanted to do break no boxes challenges.
oescolhido691 There is one hint where if you redo Turtle Woods after completing the normal gem, if you break any boxes it will show X/0 crates at the exit.
That's how I found out about the gem. I was really young and after getting the crystal I went back into the level and decided not to break a single box

also theres a hint in the new one that says be kind to boxes for a special gem thats how i worked it out.

Im an 06 kid and i grew up playing this game for Hours till 2017, this will forever be the greatest game iv ever played
it feels wierd to know this is the only game in the series where you can get a colored gem on the first level on your first visit.
what about Wrath of Cortex? you get blue gem in first level, Arctic antics
I think the theming of the location of Crash Bandicoot 2 is the blend of any Pacific Islands starting from Hawaii, Tahiti, Australia, New Guinea, Fiji and Tasmania.
On an unrelated note, the graphics are still holding up. After over 20 years and the game still looks really good.
Playing Crash Bandicoot N Sane Trilogy brought me here
when i was younger, i was always focused on getting the crystals and the clear gems here and there. i replayed turtle woods and smashed open every crate even after getting the gem. when i got to the end, it displayed 62/0. at the time, i thought "what does that mean?"
only after when someone told me how to get the blue gem, i was like "oh, that's what it means..."

Those nitros are in a really weird placement, resembling staircases. Those nitros don't bounce, that's just not natural. Just think. Because it's kinda obvious where are the secrets (except for the blue gem)
Oscar Vera i remember coming across that when i was younger and thought to myself 'nah, those nitro crates will harm me if i jumped on them.' i took the plunge and lo and behold, a secret route. the developers done an excellent job at making things inconspicuous.

I had no idea that's how you're supposed to get the red gem!
I used to do it by jumping over the seal below it and pressing R1, I had to try it a bunch of times.
Putting the coloured gem in the first level and asking players to not break a single crate to get it. Such a creative and genius idea.

Red gem glitch is the faster way to get the red gem. First go to snow go then when you see the red gem go to the bouncy box you need to slide jump spin and bodyslam of the bouncy box and you get the red gem it might take a some attempts to get it.

I hated the yellow gem so much
hey heard of this glitch about the red gem? although i never have done this before, you have to get on the gray bouncy box, do a combo trick then you get above the red gem, then belly flop it.
And if you time it correctly you can also get the red gem by jumping on the seal when it is closest to the pit! i have used this particular lots of times :D
And if you know your glitches, you don't need to use the box. You can simply spin-slide-jump, and do a bellyflop when the gem is at the lowest peak of its hover.
Persona X i saw some people do that, speaking of glitches, did you know that spyro 4 enter the dragonfly glitches and lags a lot? i have seen it so much. i have it on gamecube.
or you can stop being a bitch and go through the AIR CRASH level to get to the warp.
It took me forever but I was eventually able to pull this off.

In Turtle Woods, You Din't Break The Boxes To Get The Blue Gem.
In Snow Go, You Needed To Use The Glitched High Jump To Get The Red Gem. Or You Need To Use The Secret Route.
In The Eel Deal, You Yo Enter With Triple Aku On A Closed Door Of The Sewer To Get The Green Gem
In Plant Food, You Need End The Level With Lefting Time To Get The Yellow Gem
In Bee-Having, You Need To Up On Nitros Without Moves, And Later You Enter On A Secret Route Of The Level And Get The Purple Gem.

but in crash 2 every colored gem has different task to obtain like this video.

thomas hudders the funniest thing about it was that every time i played the level, i broke every last crate and got to the end where it displayed 62/0. i was like 0.o, and couldn't figure out what it meant. i was young back then. only when i lent the game to my neighbour and they told me what to do, i learnt what it really meant.

In the first rainforest/ water level with a time trial if you enter the bonus section and don't finish you're timer resets to 1:14. Does anyone know if this trick works to get the yellow gem too.

for yellow gem ,your time start at 1:08 but mine only 00:55.. how can...
Just Time The timer starts as soon as you enter the level, it just isnt shown until you pass the first checkpoint crate

The blue gem is the trickiest one! if there were no codes for this game. I probably would've never of found them. They are hidden very well.

TheLangozeytor Yea I Kno it took me years to figure that out. When I first bought it when it came our., I didn't try looking for it too much till I found out the trick for he blue gem.
Mrbradboy1 I only figured it out because it was a last resort. I had tried everything else. Getting the clear gem took me minute as well.
