    • 2 hours long! Hummingb...
Hummingbirds can hover in mid-air by rapidly flapping their wings 12--80 times per second. They can also fly backwards. They are among the smallest of birds about 3-4 inches long. Their name derives from the characteristic hum made by their rapid wing beats. They can fly at speeds exceeding 34 miles per hour. Hummingbirds drink nectar, a sweet liquid inside certain flowers. and by preying on insects and spiders.
This 2 hour video was filmed in January, 2012 in Southern California near San Diego. Most of the birds are Anna's Hummingbird which is a year-round resident. You can occassionally see other hummingbirds that have migrated from Costa Rica. There are a total of 3 feeders which consume about 2 gallons per day of (use 4 parts water to 1 part sugar. Ie: 30 oz container. 30/5=6. 6x4=24 oz water, 6 oz granulated sugar; no dye has been added). The amount consumed suggest these feeders support hundreds of hummingbirds. The males have more colorful plummage. The location of the feeder is in the backyard overlooking a golf course. The feeders have been at this location for 3 years! Just before sunset they become numerous.

Oh My!! That sounds so cool. I am in Atlanta and consider it astounding that I could even see 2 (!) at the feeder at all! They stayed for maybe 15 minutes total, darting in and out of the bush to sip. They are so amazing. I guess lucky to have any at all but living in a place where they are more populous would be so excellent. Thanks for sharing that.

Hello from west coast of Canada! I have ONE little female that has come by my balcony for the last year, where i have flowers growing. They remember where they have been, which is amazing to me. She is all brown which tells me she's female. It always makes me happy when i see her. You have sooo many Hummingbirds that visit you that you have enticed me to get a Hummingbird feeder, which will help them maintain their energy with all the flying they do and keep them happy. Thank you, ❤️ the vid.!

Love this!!! When our kitty Squeaky got older, we had to give her sub-q fluids twice a day. So we sat in front of the computer and watched videos like this on full screen. She would just sit quietly and watch in rapt attention while we stuck the needle in and administered her fluids.

These birds are SO insect like in how they feed and fly. It's like mother nature had just finished off making the birds and the bees, and then she decided to use the scraps left over from both, and created the hummingbird!. So much so, there is even a hummingbird moth who mimics them!.

At about 1:03:15, a wasp lands on the feeder just left of center. At this point, their is a ruby-throated humming bird at center frame that is sipping while staying airborne. There is a little copper colored one on the right who is sipping comfortably while perched. He keeps looking up expectantly the feeder like he was waiting for a resuly. Just then, bubbles erupt in the feeder! The bird on the right is looking like he was very pleased to make those bubbles - though i know that can't possibly be, AND the feeder appears to have more in it, though! I don't see any hoses unless they are up and out of frame.
I thoroughly enjoyed this lovely view into the lives these remarkable little birds. Thank You!

Love seeing them perch like that and tolerate each other. Those look like annas hummers but mine are so territorial and nasty to each other I had to hang 6 smaller feeders to keep the peace haha. My bigger feeders with perches hardly ever saw perching because they are always paranoid looking for other hummers. They like me far more than other hummers and even wait by my hand for me to hang the fresh feeder fills sometimes. They sure are bold, curious little guys and gals. My neighbors all think im some hummingbird addicted weirdo, which I am..But who can blame me? Just look at them. A wonder of nature for sure.

The hummers at my feeder probably burn off the energy they just took in by squabbling with each other. It's still early spring so hopefully they'll relax once more flowers are blooming. So far no more than two have shown up at the same time. If it gets more congested, I'll add another feeder.

They are just amazing! Very fascinating species. I also live in San Diego county and have four feeders up all the time. I live near the coast near Encinitas. For me the winter months is when they become most numerous, and as you mentioned, ESPECIALLY around sunset. I'll look and every port on every feeder will have a hummer on it. I also noticed the more of them there are the more tolerant they become of sharing. where as when there are only a handful present, there may be one or two, (usually Allen's or Rufous) that become territorial, sometimes fiercely so. Awesome video! Always great to see a fellow nature lover.

I have 3 feeders now, and they still fight--maybe it is their nature. They remind me of teenagers ;->

I had one buzzing me every time I would sit in my backyard There was a feeder there when I moved in but not used. My mom is totally into hummingbirds and was visiting me. She pointed out what this male anna was doing buzzing the feeder and then coming within inches from my face. So I started the one feeder. What a bully so I put another up. Weeks later I had 11 feeders and could watch 7 feeders from my favorite spot in the yard It gave me something to do with my old broken fishing poles they make great hangers. The next year when they came back OMG is was awesome and then I moved I gave away all my feeders to my neighbors to keep my hummers in the hood. I seriously loved them and just smiled every time I saw them. I had one that if I went thru my back door and out the front he would here the door and buzz my face as I came down my stairs When I changed my feeders out I would be at my table and what a ruckus it was until I re-hung them. This one perched really close to me trying to defend the 7 feeders I could see to no avail. I also could raise my arm up and down and he would go straight up and the dive at me then returning to his perch I swear it was like having a pet do a trick.

For those "dislikes" by people that disapprove of feeds because they think they are not good for the birds you are wrong. Here are two experiences that tell me otherwise.
    1) A KGO talk show host disapproved of feeders because he thought they prevented birds from migrating. Wrong! I put up a new feeder in the middle of winter and my first humming bird approached the feeder 30 seconds after I put it up.
    2) I had had a feeder on the back porch and took it down because of practical reasons. THREE years later I saw what was apparently a migrating humming bird approach the awning at the exactly point the feed had been hung and flew around back and forth looking for something at exactly that spot. There was NO DOUBT from the bird's actions that it was looking for the feeder I used to have there.

John ... I put one out every year (in the NE) on my patio about the third week in May. Occasionally, they get up north a bit earlier. They "announce" their arrival by hovering just outside my kitchen window for a few days!! I read somewhere they live perhaps five years if they're lucky. Once I put the feeder out, they stop hovering. I swear they must know who puts it out for them. Several years ago, my wife insisted on painting the patio ceiling to brighten it up while I was at work. She wore a bright blouse covered in almost fluorescent red flowers, and each time they came to the feeder, they tried to "access" the flowers on her blouse. lolol

Thanks, I enjoyed your comments. Here is another interesting experience. I used to travel some so we made the decision to take down the feeder because there was nobody to tend it. It was a couple of years later that I decided to put one up again. It was in the middle of December and we had not had a feeder up in years. But within thirty seconds after I put it up it up and stood under it to admire it, WE GOT OUR FIRST CUSTOMER! I since asked those at the Audubon Society about feeders keeping Hummingbirds from migrating, and they said no, if a hummingbird is to migrate it will, feeder or not.

John Sellers John .. There was an article in a Sunday newspaper some years ago regarding a small island and another area on the southern edge of Lake Erie, either on the northern edge of Ohio or Pennsylvania. They had a series of photos of people who resided there who had put up a number of feeders. it was a stop-over point for hummers flying north into Canada, providing nourishment for those who had to fly across the lake. Every spring and late summer those feeders were swamped with hummers on their way northward, then returning south for the winter. It would have been interesting to BE there when the swarm arrived. They are extremely territorial, so the most I have had visiting my feeder were five -- two males and three females. They learned how to be clever and avoid the dominant hummers. I hung the feeder under the roof of the patio out of the rain on the support beam for the roof. Although they are impossible to identify physically, except for gender, you could identify them by their habits, so I instantly knew they were not the same individuals. One male would always perch on the cable wire leading to my house, guarding the feeder and attempted to chase others away. He always fought with the other male and wouldn't allow him near, then return to the wire. All three females learned to fly in very low from the opposite end of the patio so they wouldn't be seen. One female would always fly around the feeder in several circles before she lit on the feeder. Another female, knowing the male was on that wire, would sneak in and go directly to the feeder. The third female, if you or anyone else were sitting at the table, would always fly up to your face first and hover about 12 inches away from your nose for a few seconds before she approached the feeder. Obviously, that one was my favorite. lol .

I've got 2 feeders, and the hummingbirds are VERY territorial. I never see more than 1 or 2 at the feeder because they always chase each other away. They can get pretty mean!

I watch this often. My dominant male Anna just died last night. we've been together for a few years now. do you ever allow visitors? Odd request I know, so if not, can possibly you recommend any spots in Oceanside that are hummingbird heavy like this? So good for the heart. Thank you for this video.
