    In Dagenham, London, another abandoned house calls for the work of the council’s extreme clean team to get it back to looking spick and span for new tenants. But unlike the usual filthy properties the team normally have to deal with, this house feels rather homely… Strewn among the usual waste, is a number of pictures, keepsakes and documents that are clearly of rich historical and sentimental value to the previous tenant's family.
    Usual procedure for an extreme clean is to throw everything in the bin. Without any owners present to collect the items it can be a ruthless process. Thankfully, professional Grimefighters Gary and Luke recognise the significance of some of the items and salvage what they can to return it to the next of kin. Well done, Lads.

      Things that are precious will be kept, don't worry.
      My mother's old aunty Dirkje had a sister (my mom's 60, so imagine how old her auntie's sister was) who hand-embroidered an old kitchen-garment.
      Not sure what it's called, I'm Dutch, we call it an 'schort' or 'keukenschort.'
      Either way, beautifully blue with handmade white embroidery. It's my fancy keukenschort and I've got it now.
      Her other embroidery-works have gone to collectors, in some cases sold or donated.
      Stuff with stains or very broken items, had to go. The rest was donated and/or preciously saved and cherished by many (hand-embroidered things are very much wanted, either for old people's homes, dementia-homes or just people that like embroidery in general.)
      I honestly wouldn't mind if we stopped making stuff for a while and used up what we had. That stuff is usually of way better quality.

    When my grandma passed, I made sure to all and sundry who were involved in clearing out her house ( I helped too btw) that anything that was usable had to be donated. I volunteered at a local charity and we would receive boxes upon boxes of so many beautiful things that you just know relatives just cleared out a china cabinet or whatever in 5 minutes, didn't bother looking, and done away with it. I was so sad when I saw that and I vowed that would not happen to my grandma's things. All the best stuff we passed around the family, pictures shared among us etc. and so only the stuff that no one wanted was given away. Only very few things went to the landfill. That's how it should be. Makes me so sad when I see things like this, but it's all too common.

    I've moved house many times in my life and I've learned to pare down my possessions each time I do so. Now that I'm old, the physical part of moving becomes more and more difficult. Perhaps if people would go through their stuff once a year or so as if they were preparing to move somewhere else, it would be easier to weed out stuff that isn't needed any longer and it can still be donated somewhere. It doesn't take much to have this sort of thing happen.

    People complain about council housing...but can't poor people take accountability for their own actions?...it is on someone else to clean up their mess..at least they are lucky to get a house. baggers can't be choosers.

  • @ginadelsasso288
    @ginadelsasso288 3 ปีที่แล้ว

    There was a lot more in that house that could have been boxed up and saved for the old tenant or the tenants family. Its seems cruel to just chuck everything but a few pictures. Some would think they were lucky to get that, but if they are grieving the loss of a family member it might be hard to clean and collect what should be kept or passed down. I feel bad that a whole life of stuff was just put in the bin.

  • @vandahuman8522
    @vandahuman8522 5 ปีที่แล้ว

    If I was responsible for the clearing of the house I would put all the items of furniture and toys one side and contact someone to collect it. Old photos of ex Servicemen should never be dumped, rather contact the Historical Society or the regiment and ask if they are interested. To be it's sad and disrespectful to the person who has passed away to dump their things. But then again I am different , I cannot deal with family members been disrespectful or don't care attitude towards one another.

    Takes the same amount of time, if not less, to pull up with two trucks, a bin wagon for the rubbish and a truck destined for a charity shop. A charity shop could have raised a good few hundred out of this house alone! The furniture project would have taken a lot of it for people who cannot afford to furnish their homes as well. This is such a waste!

    Such a wast to just throw things like that away when there are so many unfortunate people out there that could use it
    The fact that they are told they have to throw it away just gose to show that the council don't give 2 shits about the poor
