50,000 rats used to live here. Now it’s a ghost town. In the East London suburb of Dagenham, a house has been slowly disintegrating… The walls, carpet and furniture are being nibbled and chewed to pieces. The cause? Rats. Lots and lots of rats.
This rodent infested property was once a place someone called home. Now, it is completely uninhabitable. The Barking and Dagenham council have sent extreme cleaners, Gary and Luke, to rectify the situation.
As Gary and Luke dig through the shredded remnants, they find grisly and depressing reminders of how the previous tenants lived and who they shared their home with.

There were children living in this house... and the children are probably still with the people who are responsible for this mess. Scary.

It is. I grew up in a house not quite as bad as this but on a par and it traumatised me. My Mum was mentally ill but didn't get any help or support and her hoarding got so out of control after my Dad left. I used to try and clean but then it'd just go back to being a state and any time I'd throw stuff out she'd go crazy and threaten to kick me out because of that I can't cope around any kind of mess at all now.

It's really a shame that people don't appreciate that they are given a half decent place to live! Have some respect for the property 👊 and for the themselves! You can be down on your luck and still be clean!

@@donnap3495 Some of people living on welfare I know - most of them to be honest, take great care of what they're given. This person's story must be really sad. Watching the other videos, I realize they're mostly old people or dependant people left completely alone. This is so sad.

My mom used to deliver food to old people (thats a thing in our region I think, or is it nationwide - anyway) and some people cried when she told them she was leaving... for some, she was their only social link, the only person going to see them, taking some time to chat, because my mom is super chatty like me. I can’t get my head around people who rent and destroy the property in the process. When I rented I took the greatest of care as I knew that it didn’t belong to me. I understand there are certain factors but this seems to happen so much these days!
When it's a council property it's a different story it's more of a relaxed tenancy

@@drbloomer6380 councils dont really care as long as you pay their rent lol thats why some council tenants dont make good neighbours cos they have no respect for noise or for basic tidyness and they'll do drugs out in the open etc
No, it happened in the past as well, but there was too much stigma and it certainly wouldn't be televised
Its weird because some people who don't deserve these places get them and ruin them while others are on a long waiting list
They should be fined for leaving the apartment that way . That makes absolutely no sense at all.
They are, they try to find them and take them to court if nessacery.
Since this is a council house the council will go and find them if they can, but in a private rent situation that’s what your security deposit is for. (Though many landlords try to screw tenants out of it anyway)
You don't live like that, unless you have serious mental issues. Fining them is like kicking a person on the ground.

As I struggle to make sure my home is spotless at the end of my current tenancy, with severe disability, these videos are making me feel better.
I too am disabled in a wheelchair cannot walk widespread severe pain 24/7 vision problems also and I would never could never do this to a property I without hesitation get a trash bag and put the trash in it that you can do anyone can do with no excuse people that do this should have jail time or given a choice for jail or to clean the public bathrooms in their city or town because this is unexcusable it truly is Criminal

These men should wear head-to-toe protective gear whenever they enter a property. It is impossible to leave the premises without something attaching to them. Then they take that home. I hope they have a decontamination chamber to undress, shower and put on their regular clothes BEFORE THEY GO HOME.
I am concerned about the lack of protective gear & then the contamination that is taking home with them to their families.

They set them incorrectly. Traps should always be flush with the wall.
I've seen "Pest Control Pete" superglue the chocolate to the trap in another episode. He said the rats actually whip their tails at it to try getting it out safely. I guess if that fails they still just can't resist!
I'm surprised that the cleaners don't have a mask over their face and are going in barearmed. I think that it would be safer if they had no exposed skin while cleaning that mess.
This made me remember an old story my father told me that became part of family legend. The first place I lived in was an old duplex house (two separate 2-story houses joined by a common wall from attic to cellar). Everybody had rats and mice now and then, and everybody had unpleasant neighbors at about the same rate. The man living in the other side of the house beat his children; Dad despised him. We used our cellar bathroom, the guy next door did not. Dad found a rat in there once that disappeared into the neighbor's loo through a hole in the wall, which Dad promptly plugged up. Several days later, the child-beater noticed an unpleasant odor and opened his bathroom to investigate. There was this lovely decomposing rat floating in his toilet. That has to be one of the finest examples of Karma that I can remember.
That was a 20 man job, kudos to those 2!

Living with hoarder just absolute painful. My dad was like that, he was a hoarder.
Everyday he bring some trash into home and he always angry when we throw away his trash. We secretly throwing away so many stuff and hope he did not realize it. Most of time he did not realize as long we don't throw away his stuff in front of him.

An FYI if you’re baiting snap traps: Use peanut butter. They’ll want it, but it’s difficult for the mice and rats to just take it and run. If you can get them to pause for even a second, you’ve a better chance of the trap going off. We used to do that in our outbuildings and it was pretty successful.

Yeah...I don't think two guys can clean out,clean and sanitize along with going through items to keep or donate or throw away....in 4 days.....they had help....and ewww...No PPE...I'm not even going in without PPE

I’m not understanding why landlords don’t do nothing inspections on the inside and outside of THEIR property. Put it in your lease. Once a month the tenant MUST let you inspect the inside and the outside of YOUR property.

Some people don't want to deal with the mess. They move on to a clean flat and leave everything behind but their clothes and maybe their telly.

I had a rat in my house once and I poisoned it but it ended up dying under the kitchen counter which was hard to get to and stunk. Best to trap them so they don’t die somewhere hard to reach.
I know they're filthy & full of disease but i still can't help but feel sorry for the rats with the traps. They're still animals
