    A stock OMTech Polar includes 2 different rotary's that are limited to engraving objects with a diameter between 30-74mm. By creating these leg risers, you will now have the added space that you need to engrave many styles of 20 oz tumblers or larger diameter objects.

    The rotary limitation on the spec sheet was one of my main concerns on deciding on this machine. It’s really nice to see how you adress this problem, and better yet, that you took your time to bring it up with Omtech directly.

      Some people wanted an extension cord. You can make your own or a found this guy on Etsy that sells stepper extension cables. I bought the 5 inch and it works great

    At 8:30 you point out about the cord length for the rotary. If you open the rotary and rotate the stepper so the connector faces up, that should help a slight bit. Granted you won't get much extra length, but you'll get some.

    • @EdmondsWoodshop

      You know I never even looked at that. With these risers the line is pretty tight so it may be just enough slack to give someone what they need. Good eye! I did speak with OMTech COO and they're making it with longer wires for this reason. I'm sure my video will be obsolete once they figure out they can market leg risers.

    Thanks for the tutorial! I will definitely be making these. How do you determine focal distance with the risers? I haven't tried tumblers yet.

    • @EdmondsWoodshop
      @EdmondsWoodshop  ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Your focal distance is “the distance between your workpiece and your nozzle.” That distance doesn’t ever change. Our polars work backwards to where we have to put input an offset to move the laser head down, but what we really need to know is the distance between the workpiece and the material. What I did is that I found a piece of material that fit perfectly between my workpiece and laser nozzle (after I set the nozzle) and that material will act as a gauge to measure how far off my laser nozzle will need to be from my tumbler. It will take bit of trial and error because our polar is driven by incremental inputs in lightburn

    • @EdmondsWoodshop
      @EdmondsWoodshop  ปีที่แล้ว

      You can easily find an extension cable by searching for “stepper motor extension cable” on Amazon. The only problem is that you won’t know how they’re wired until you get get them. Some come reversed so you’ll have to swap the two outside wires around.

  • @Gabrielxavila

    This is perfect. Quick question, how do you calculate the focus height post riser install?

    • @ImaginationDesign
      @ImaginationDesign ปีที่แล้ว

      I think the polar has an auto focus. You're not doing anything to really change the height from the POV of the laser.

    • @EdmondsWoodshop
      @EdmondsWoodshop  ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Your tool box actually has a ruler with a notch cutout labeled 50.8. This cutout sides on the frame of where the lens sits. you would adjust your height of the laser head until the bottom of that ruler is touching the cup

    Great video! Forgive me for what may be a dumb question. I'm new to all of this and considering getting a Polar. How would you focus the laser on the tumbler after doing this?

    • @EdmondsWoodshop
      @EdmondsWoodshop  10 หลายเดือนก่อน +2

      There’s a ruler in the tool box that has a 50.8mm notch on it. You set that on the z axis and lower until the bottom of the ruler touches the cup

  • @katrinab2897

    After you add the risers do you know what the max diameter of the tumbler (and length of an insulated water bottle) can be? I know they all can have different lengths/ diameter based on shape of bottle. Thanks! Your videos are very helpful! Can’t wait for my polar to show up!

    • @EdmondsWoodshop
      @EdmondsWoodshop  ปีที่แล้ว +1

      I don’t know the max diameter. I just had 20 oz tumblers on hand to check. Heck, you might be able to do 30 oz. As far as the length, the rotary is adjustable. I’ll have to measure how far down it can adjust to.

    Great Video! How do you keep the tumbler from moving left/right as it spins? My diode laser has a chuck style rotary.
    How do you handle the focusing when using your risers?

    • @EdmondsWoodshop
      @EdmondsWoodshop  ปีที่แล้ว +1

      The polar comes with two rotary’s. One for wider object and one for narrow objects. I also keep two different settings for when I use my rotary versus when I use my default laser settings for normal operation. For my rotary settings I keep my speed way down. I don’t have moving issues.
      I only use the risers for objects that are wider than what the stock setup allows. I use the included ruler to focus my laser head to the top of my tumbers surface.

    Can’t you just solder some similar gauge wire and make an extension? Then add some heat shrink to cover the wires back up? That way you could laser a larger tumbler? But, maybe make the feet a bit larger due to the increased height.

    • @EdmondsWoodshop
      @EdmondsWoodshop  ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Absolutely! Being the admin for the Polar group, I would say more people are afraid to do that than buy an extension cable. If you're comfortable with then, then by all means.....you absolutely can. And yes, you would need to make the risers taller if you needed more depth.
      They also make extension cables for 3D printers that will work for this as well and can be found on amazon. You just have to make sure the male and female ends can plug into each other. The one's I found on amazon were sold out, but I found someone on etsy to make me one.

    I'm following your page as we're contemplating a Polar. I'm far from "techy" but do you think this is a good starter machine? It gets so confusing researching all of them and I'm still confused what the difference of other 2, cheaper, desk top models are, other than speed, camera or no camera, and work area! Thank you for this video too. It will be helpful down the road should we make that leap! It's looking likely though!

    • @EdmondsWoodshop
      @EdmondsWoodshop  ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Hi Karla. The nice thing about the polar is that it's ready out of the crate. There will still be a learning curve with the software and the functions of the machine, but as far as general setup goes, you'll be good to go. The polar is bit different from OMTech's other models just because of it's general makeup. It includes all the necessary accessories to get started where on the bigger models you might need to buy the extras such as the inline fans, the chillers, the LED's, etc.
      However, with the bigger machines you obviously get bigger space, more versatility as far as engraving larger objects. The trade off is that you need to learn how to properly set up a laser. This means learning how to align mirrors and do a ramp test. Its not bad, but can be a tedious process. We have tutorial videos for all of it.
      If you haven't already, I am an admin for the Offical OMTech group. I'm partnered with BeardedBuildsco (another laser channel here on youtube) and we help thousands of people like yourself narrow down your research.

      @@EdmondsWoodshop Thank you so much for your quick reply! That's one of the reasons we're leaning towards the Polar, everything comes with it and basically just ready to go! A little more space for working than the other 2 desktop models, but not overly huge. Perfect for projects I would like to do! Right now anyway, who knows down the road, but set up, aligning mirrors and all that doesn't sound like that's for me right now!! LOL!
      I really appreciate your videos, time, comments and insight! I'll make sure I hop on the other pages as well!! Research is fun, to a point! LOL! I just want to create now!!
      I am familiar with the Cricut craft line for crafting, cutting paper, vinyl, etc., and using Design Space (which is a pain sometimes) but it actually seems pretty similar to Light Burn, although light burn seems even easier!!
      Thanks again, I appreciate it!
