- The dory fishermen of Pacific City brave the surf that most people avoid, riding rough waves to get to waters that were heavily fished for generations. Today, these small flat bottomed boats are more often used for recreation than commercial fishing, but the dory boat tradition, which goes back several generations along the Oregon Coast, lives on. In this video from Oregon Field Guide’s archives, we visit the people who continued to face the powerful and threatening ocean in the early 21st Century, and look back on mid-20th century footage of dory boats from the past.

Very nice story. Been dory fishing all my life, for 63 years. Started with my dad in a double ender, then on to commercial fishing and now sport fishing. It's a tremendous legacy. Jack Gillman was always a solid rock of a fisherman, it was good to see him in the story.
When I was 6 years old my first ocean fishing was here off the beach in my grandfather's bartender.
I am now 62-year-old with a Dory in my driveway that is 85% done and will be launching from the beach in summer 2023.
I have an immigrant Romanian family are my friends that are coming along on a fishing adventure the kids will always remember like I still see in my head the day at 6 years old going through the surf and catching so many salmon.
Live here. I love it. Wouldn't live anywhere else.
We launch off the beach. I've never been upside down, but it does get exciting 🙂
When I was in South Africa it was common practice to launch in the same fashion. Mainly for skin diving. Nice history of Oregon.
Interesting episode on the Dory heritage. When I was in Mexico and Central america, the local fishermen launch Panga's from the beach into large surf. The Pangas are built very similar to the Dory boat.
I also spent many summers there fishing with my Stepdad Ernie Edmunds. I can’t think of a better way to have grown up lots of great stories. Anyone remember the Dunes dance hall that was on the beach?
I knew Ernie well
@@billh3999 I don’t know if this is a private reply or not but would love to hear more stories about him. Thxs
Visited this place on 05/26/24 ... beautiful is a very underrated word! Calm day yet saw some 5 footers rolling in.. makes you wonder what a gnarly day would look like!
"When the waves hit you in the face, you knew they were there❤😁☕☕☕
Love Pacific City my family's been going there over 50 years my dad experienced story fishing it's a totally different city now though!
Dory not story!! Lol
Thank you algorithm
reporter: how can you see the waves if....?
ole timer: when they hit you in the face you knew they were there
LOL
I'm sure we're not the only ones to appreciate that humor😁☕
@Oregon Public Broadcasting - What year was this first aired? Also, I did not see in the credits the narrator. Him and Steve Amen were the primary voices of Oregon Filed guide when it started. ❤
These folks have been doing this for well over a hundred years. The only "legislation" there needs to be is for others on the beach an in the water to watch out. Wear visible clothing to the boat pilots can see the swimmers and the surfers and know where the boats will be launching or coming back in. In other words, common sense. Absolutely ridiculous to think they would want to end such an amazing tradition, all for a few that have no common sense. Keep on doin what you do. ❤
I prefer the nine and net, I'm a fox fisher what can I say
build these men a boat launch
Not realistic directly into the surf. Alternative is to launch from ramp in river, then head out to sea over the bar. Both are a super good time, or not so much depending on a few things..
They already have one.....the beach😂
Aloha hugs I like Opakapaka Fish to eat please
If he’s a schoolteacher he should have the sense to put a life jacket on him and neglecting his children in this way you know how awful that is out there the kid goes over what are you gonna do jump in after him and leave the other one what the fuck is wrong with people you can afford the boat you can afford goddamn life jackets
Not sure what you mean by "put a life jacket on him." Both boys in the bow are wearing life jackets. The father doesn't appear to be wearing a life jacket. Do you have a problem with the father not wearing a life jacket? Oregon boat regulations require life jackets and a floatation device be on board. Even if father not wearing one, l have no reason to think he can't afford a life jacket. I spent a summer fishing a dory out of Pacific City years ago. The clip of the father taking his two boys out does not appear to me that the father is taking an excessive risk.
6:54 they are wearing life jackets.
@@Sabaka1954 You might know also that kids are required by Oregon law to have a life jacket on at all times.
My first ocean fishing at 6 years old was from by grandfathers 19 foot bartender off the beach here.
I'm now 62 yrs old with an 85% complete dory in the driveway so a time in age is a time to retry the beach launch again at Pacific city is coming in summer 2023.
I am bringing a family friend of immigrants from Romania with 3 kids that love trout fish .
I’m the teacher in this video. FYI it was calm as a mill pond that day & I had to time the waves to make it look better so mind your own business
