Mini-Shinkansen does not mean smaller gauge. All Shinkansen in Japan are Standard Gauge (4ft 8.5 in.) Mini-Shinkansen refers to upgrading former Narrow gauge trackage into Standard for Shinkansen use and slower speeds exceeding no faster than 130 KM/H (80 MPH). Akita and Yamagata services are the Mini-Shinkansen. If the E5 and E6 were of different gauges, they would not be able to run together or with other E Series Shinkansen.
The mini shinkansen certainly have the same gauge, but the width of the trains is limited to 2.95m wide to pass conventional stations (E3 and E6 series). “Normal” Shinkansen are 3.35 to 3.40m wide. Note that the conventional trains operating on the "Mini shinkansen" lines are the only JR conventional trains to be on standard gauge
Fun fact the shinkansen nose is designed after a bird called the Kingfisher.. The skinkansen travles so fast (250 mph) it would cause sonic booms when existing a tunnel.. Lucky one of the engineers was an avid bird watcher an discovered when diving head-first into the water at speeds of up to 25mph it does so without a splash.. so they mimic the head of the kingfisher for the shinkansen an Boom!! problem solved.
E5 and H5 Shinkansen are identical in terms of overall appearance. The only major differences are that the H5 has an enhanced snow-plow for colder weather operations in Hokkaido , slower operation speed through the Hokkaido Undersea tunnel (Duel Gauge track), limited to 260 KM/HM, (though both are cable of 320 KM/H), a blue/ purple stripe along the side rather than the pink one, and the logo is that of Hokkaido on the H5.
Also the lights on the H5 is LED, while the E5 is only using the Halogen light so that's why if you saw the E5, the light is more warmer color than the H5, the E5 is owned by JR East and the H5 is owned by JR Hokkaido
