    Steinbeck is phenomenal. 'Cannery Road' is one of my favourite books ever and absolutely what I would recommend anyone down about humanity, because it is about these simple, flawed characters who are just trying their best to do good things for each other and sometimes fail terribly. It's also quite short, has some gorgeous reflections on nature and life woven in, and essentially a love letter to his old neighborhood. It's another good one to start with before tackling the big epics and speaks of profound love for humanity in all its fallibility.

    For some reason I'm so excited for to take an American Literature class. I absolutely adore American lit, and Steinbeck is one of my favorites. I like to describe his writing as somewhere between Hemingway and Faulkner, where Hemingway is praised for his simplistic, extremely blunt and straightforward, but still emotionally impactful prose, whereas Faulkner is like the praised for having the complete opposite. Steinbeck is not hard to read, and at times leans more to the Hemingway side of writing style, but he does some things with emotions that I just don't understand, and the stories he tells are all immaculate. If you have to read more Steinbeck for your class, then you're in for a massive treat, especially if you're reading something like East of Eden or Of Mice and Men.

    From a philosophy major, it's an amazing discipline but incredibly difficult. When reading philosophy, don't be afraid to rely on referencing summaries to understand some of the basic arguments. Don't be afraid of having the work being "spoiled"--the point of reading philosophy isn't to be entertained but to learn!

    I'm so excited that you're picking up more philosophy books!! I'm a philosophy student who watches your videos because I wanna learn more about literature, and I've learnt so much from you 🥰 One of my professors once said "Literature is sometimes more philosophical than philosophy", there is so much intertwining between the two, it's fascinating. I think you would also like Kierkegaard's writings, or philosophers of aesthetics such as Plato, Kant, Adorno, Walter Benjamin, Jacques Derrida, Jean Baudrillard. I'd be happy to suggest specific titles if you're interested! I hope you'll have a great time reading philosophy and I'm so curious to hear your thoughts on it ❤

    • @lesego3965
      @lesego3965 2 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Hi! I am really interested in philosophy but don't know where to start. Do you have any recommendations I could consider? I am into everything existentialism, Death and Life, religion, nature, love, mental health. I read a lot. I've enjoyed The Myth of Sisyphus by Camus. So please, anything, I would really love to incorporate philosophy into my reading. 🥰

    • @hongnguyenkim8541
      @hongnguyenkim8541 2 ปีที่แล้ว +9

      @@lesego3965 Hii, I'm honored to be entrusted with philosophy recommendations for you! :D I'm no expert and only a novice to philosophy as well but I'll try my best. Camus is one of those who believe philosophy is better passed on through narratives and stories so all of his writings are very engaging and accessible for big readers, I'm reading The Plague and liking it as well. Other French existentialism writers would also be my suggestion, such as Simone de Beauvoir and Sartre, although they write without a narrative so it would be a bit more daunting to get through. In Being and Nothingness Sartre writes a lot about mortality and immortality, love, sex, religion so I think you'd be interested. De Beauvoir's The Ethics of Ambiguity compliments Sartre's work well with meditations on freedom and choices. If you want to branch out of 20th-century France, Kierkegaard and Heiddeger are considered to be founding fathers of existentialism. Kierkegaard's Fear and Trembling, Either/Or, The Concept of Anxiety, The Sickness Unto Death cover all of the topics you mentioned, as with Heiddeger's Being and Time, The Question Concerning Technology, with considerations of nature as well. There are so many more works I want to introduce, but maybe these would suffice for now, as the above are all very giant works that we study in school through years. I'd recommend reading secondary sources about those philosophers and works, as well as podcasts covering them, to aid your understanding and help you get the most out of your time reading difficult texts, us students still listen to Philosophize This til graduation haha. Please let me know if you're interested in philosophies beyond European male writers - Eastern, African philosophies, woman, queer philosophers. Hope this helps a bit with finding philosophy readings and hope you'll enjoy them 🥰

    Well, I'm studying Education in Philosophy and I can say Discourse on the Method is a great book to start, it was actually the first one we got to read as an introduction to Philosophy. It is short and it is one of the most important books not only because it explains the Cogito but because it is a system itself. And also sometimes it is good to start chronologically because philosophy is a cyclical subject, so you may encounter a concept that we can track back to Plato, for example, and it's good to know what that same concept meant back then and how it has evolved.

    I majored in philosophy, and those two books are great places to start if you're interested in the history of modern philosophy. You would want to start with Descartes first and then move on to Hume. George Berkeley also gets grouped in with those two, particularly his work, A Treatise Concerning the Principles of Human Understanding. But if you want an overall overview of what modern philosophers are concerned with, you might want to start with Russell's The Problems of Philosophy, which is pretty short and clear.

    From a PhD student who studies early modern philosophy, start with Descartes over Hume! They are both great and fairly accessible for people starting out with philosophy. But much of Hume's project is critical and so it can be helpful to already have a good sense of Descartes and the Cartesian philosophy to see better what sorts of things he had problems with. The Discourse on Method is such a great place to start!

    YOOOOOOO Graceling!!! I love Kristin Cashore's books so much. Graceling is the first in the Graceling Realm series, but the books are not a traditional series, per se. The second book, Fire (which is my favourite), follows a whole new set of characters, and you don't need to read Graceling to enjoy that one. Bitterblue, the third book, and Winterkeep, the fourth book released last year, do kind of require you to read Graceling, but they're all separate adventure separated by many years.
    I recommend all of them, but Graceling is definitely really clearly a debut novel. So if you vibe in general with the feel of the story but weren't impressed with the quality of writing, stick with it, Cashore's skills build with each book.

I loved the discussions we had about it and it opened my eyes to so much symbolism that I wouldn't have noticed if I was just reading it on my own. Many of the topics in the book were also so thought-provoking. Hawthorne touches on the dangers of legalism, the importance of forgiveness (of yourself and others), women's rights, and the effects of guilt, among many others. My life has been a mess recently and my goal for this month is to start getting back to my regular routine slowly and read more books intentionally that I am interested in. Your video is a reminder for me to start planning my month and geeting back to regular life. You provide so much comfort in these videos Emma, I can't thank you enough!🌸🌸

    On a Steinbeck note, I think if you love One Hundred Years of Solitude, then Grapes of Wrath is definitely up your alley! I love both novels, and they both explore family dynamics in a similarly (though more magical in Marquez) odd and complicated way.

    That opening ad - had me laughing so hard! But poor Emma, I DO relate to being stuck on what to read next with so many book choices! That said, your monthly reading planning videos are always such a delight. I'm excited about starting the Old Curiosity Shop and have downloaded the audiobook so I am excited about that. City of Brass has been sitting on my shelves for a while now, and it sounds amazing and up my alley, so you're motivating me to pick it up too.
    I've only read Of Mice and Men by Steinbeck but LOVED that one, and have wanted to read East of Eden for a long time now. I feel like he's a favourite author and I have barely read anything for him...

    Your commercial 🤣🤣
    Heeeeey, that's my American lit textbook too! And we also read The Scarlet Letter (and have to write 3 assignments on it, ugh).
    Steinbeck is WONDERFUL. He's probably the only classic American author I do like, haha. I love The Pearl so much!

    I love The Pearl! I haven't read it in ages, and you mentioning it made me want to do a reread. Steinbeck was one of the few authors I read in school that I actually liked.

    Emma, if you love Steinbeck I highly recommend reading Of Mice and Men. I read it in my eighth grade year and I loved it. I reread it again this year and fell in love with it all over again!

    I took an American literature class way back when I was in college (40 years ago!) we were never assigned Native American literature. Mostly white male authors! So glad to see that is included today! We missed out!

    Steinbeck's Of Mice and Men was my first read.. it's a novella and it surprised me because it made me cry. And me being a person who doesn't cry much while reading books ..it really took me by surprise and I LOVED his writing.

    Here I am, adding to the positive reviews of Steinbeck! I love everything I read from him, even Grapes of Wrath which was excruciatingly difficult to read because English isn't my first language.

    the fact that you, emma, can make me watch an advert and thoroughly enjoy it is something i can't even wrap my head around. afraid of the day more international brands and such will start sponsoring you because that's the day I'll go penniless lol.

    Random side note: I’m a psychology minor and in every one of my psychology/philosophy classes, there’s this on going joke where every time we hear Freud or anything Freud-like, everyone (teacher included) rolls their eyes and groans “Of course it’s Freud again” (respect is work, of course, but that man is everywhere)
