      As in people from Great Britain (or British) would have either English, Welsh or Scottish accents? "Accents and dialects vary widely across the United Kingdom; as such, a single "British accent" does not exist, but someone could be said to have an English, Welsh, or Scottish accent although these all have several different sub-types." en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Regional_accents_of_English

      Is this sarcasm? Haha. They do sound like actors having trouble with an American accent for the most part...over annunciated, or raspy. Scotsmen usually have the worst time, especially at the start of their career. I don't blame them though, it is a thick accent.

    • @Lilly_DetachedQueen
      @Lilly_DetachedQueen 10 หลายเดือนก่อน

      @@taylorguerinwilkens9808I'm a non-native English speaker. I agree. Emma Watson's attempt on doing an American accent really sucks. She was the best playing Hermione Granger. But after observing her next projects after Harry Potter, I realized she's not that of a great actress. She can't pull off any challenging roles. She is very picky. I heard she was chosen to play Cinderella but she decided to play Belle instead. She tends to incorporate or associate her women empowerment ideals in a simple Disney role, when it's not even necessary.
      I don't know but I view her as someone who feels very entitled in Hollywood just because she's British. There are much better non-American actresses out there.
      I'd rather pick Margot Robbie. She can play any roles despite being Australian. Her gorgeous face meets the standards. She can do a princess role in a Disney movie, she can play Barbie, she can be in a historical movie, at the same time she can also play a badass character in a sci-fi movie. She's so dynamic and versatile. Her American accent is also the best.

      @brandynettleton1658 7 ปีที่แล้ว +13

      They aren't nearly as bad as watchmojo is making it out to be. Some of the accents are tough to pull off even for American actors. For instance, I'm from Texas and I always feel like they over do it and make it reeeeal slow and drawly. We don't actually talk like that...lol! But even American actors do it!

    • @Rowgue51
      @Rowgue51 7 ปีที่แล้ว +7

      You're not the only one. After they rattled off a few I thought this video was supposed to be a joke or something. I was expecting to hear people totally butchering things and sounding like an American doing a really bad Irish or British accent. But these people all sound just fine.
      Besides most Americans have a really vanilla generic accent that doesn't have many distinctive characteristics that it would be obvious if they were butchered. Now if somebody was trying to portray a really specific really distinctive regional accent like a Boston or New York or Chicago accent it would be really obvious and sound ridiculous if done badly. But then most American actors even sound ridiculous trying to imitate those accents.

    I think this is a bit of a reach. Speaking as an American, I don't find these to be so horrible as this video says. By these criteria, lots of Americans have bad American accents. Christopher Walken, for example.
    Regarding accents becoming more pronounced during the most dramatic moments, plenty of real Americans do this, especially if they have "unlearned" regional accents in favor of what is considered to be unaccented American English. For instance, I used to date a woman from NYC, who only had an accent when she was angry.

      they weren't laughably terrible, but you could still it's not the actor's natural accent, which can pull the viewer out of the moment, and for some of us, be a bit cringey. For the accent to work, the viewers (particularly viewers from the same country as the character, so American viewers for American characters) need to be unable to tell that the actor is not actually from same place as the character. An example of a good American accent is Hugh Jackman, who if it wasn't for wikipedia, I as an American would never have known that he was Australian.

      Joseph Quinn that's the problem with euphemisms; what she said didn't sound correct, but it was. euphemisms tend to use the most generic language possible and end up stripping the words of their usefulness by chaining them to a narrow context. "Native" has nothing to do with ethnicity.

      I mean, yeah you make a point. But by that logic there's no "british" accent. There's Lancashire accents, Cornish accents, West Country accents, etc. But we identify something in all of those and generally pinpoint them to be British. Same thing with America. We have Midwest accents, New York accents, a ton of different Southern accents, and whatnot. It's true we're a "melting pot", but most major countries are like that. You can find accents from Canada, China, Burma, Australia, and Kenya all over the world - not just in America.

    In Star Wars: A New Hope, a lot of the 'American' accents were done by British actors. The bartender, 'We don't serve their kind here...', and the two imperial guards on the Death Star, 'TK421 why are you not at your post?' and 'Where are you taking this.....thing?'. The accents sound a little vague American, meaning you couldn't pin it down to any part of the US.

    7:16 I'm a South Carolina native. His accent is pretty good. From what I've observed, people from South Carolina and North Carolina have similar dialects. It definitely sounds like a Carolina southern accent, which has a couple of different variations. His variation is not as thick as the ones I hear in my family, but the pronunciation seems to be the same and he does open his throat as much on any vowel sounds, which doesn't really mean accuracy. I haven't seen the entire movie, but from the clips you've shown, his accent isn't that bad. The Carolinas aren't that big in terms of film towns, so it's obvious that people don't know what somebody from either of the Carolinas sounds like.

    As an American, for me most of the accents work OK if taken as being merely "an American accent" and not a specific regional American accent. The ones that jumped out to me were Winstone's and Statham's, the latter with a bizarre blend of English and New York. Far more odd-sounding than any of these was David Tennant's accent in Gracepoint.

    The fact that the overly officious English accent that he used for his “handicapped” character came out of a pizza delivery dude was amazing! That shock of that alone was hilarious. I had no complaints about his generalized American dude accent in the second half of the movie. That was less important than him getting his perfect “phony” English accent down. How do people still not understand that southerners don’t actually pronounce every word/speak in general like they’re in an old western? Lennie did an awesome job. Even some words that sound the same, are pronounced differently from each other (depending on the person)-example: “Like”-some May use the sharp I (as in what would sound like “eye” and some may use the long “southern” I. And the word “die”-which can go the same way as explained above...some pronounce “like” with the ‘eye’ sound but at the same time pronounce “die” with the long, southern i sound. People that aren’t southern need to stop trying to critique southern accents

    It's mainly the southern accents that seem to throw the Brits. I think it's because every neutral-accented American has parodied a southern accent at some point, so we are very familiar with what fake southern sounds like. It's hard to nail it without it going overboard. I also think the people who are very famous in the States with a British accent have a harder time of it. I first really got to know Hugh Laurie with his (admittedly perfect) New Jersey accent, and I didnt really believe his actual British voice at first, just because it was so jarring compared to what I was used to.

    Lennie James doesn't have that bad of a southern accent. I was surprised to even see him on the list. Saying his accent gets worse during dramatic moments isn't really a bad thing, when in stressful situations my accent gets worse too. Not every person from the south talks the same so there isn't really a set tone he should have, he does really good in his role.
