  • There's a lot to know about crayfish bait. A lot more than just "which one works best". If you live a long way from a crayfishing area, and don't get to go crayfishing very often, then you will want the best bait that money can buy.
However, if you live close to crayfishing waters, and go crayfishing frequently, you may wish to choose a bit that is more economical, or one that holds it's smell for a lot longer.
In this video, I tell you about my person 5 favourite crayfishing baits.

Over here in WA to catch our freshwater crayfish (marron) a top bait is chook pellets in a stocking, smeared with vegemite. Works an absolute treat the pellets absorbs the strong vegemite smell. We also use the baits mentioned the video except carp. Very informative robbie, great job 👍

Thanks Mark. If I wasn't able to go craying as often as I do, and it was a rare occasion, I would absolutely be using meat of some kind.

G'day Robbie, enjoyed the video and the breakdown of the baits.
Carp is a very good salt-water bait also. Especially for the likes of gummy sharks.
Here's a bit of trivia, that you probably already know.
From what I've learned, over the years, crayfish are vegetarian. They only eat meat to stop it from fouling the water. I read a book a few years ago. It was written in the late 1800's by a fellow in Tasmania. He was studying the giant crayfish that live there. These things can grow to around a metre long. He wrote that he found a dead wallaby beside a small stream and a giant crayfish was eating it. It actually came out of the water and over a 3 day period, consumed the entire wallaby. Hair, skin, bones, the whole bloody lot.
I suppose it had to jump in the water occasionally to catch its breath. 😆😆😆
    Yes it is fascinating.
I'll try to get the name of the book for you.
Anyway, have a great day, cheers Craig.

Here in south east Qld we have a lot of redclaw and they love rockmelon and parboiled potato. A cheap tin of catfood, corn on the cob and even sunlight soap are popular baits. The new style opera house traps are legal here. Can't use the old type.

    G'day Robbie, yep back again.
The reference to the wallaby eating crayfish may have been written by Charles Gould in 1870, in a paper he did for the royal society of Tasmania.
If you get onto Wikipedia under giant crayfish, then scroll through the references, there is a pdf you can download.
    Anyhow, cheers again, Craig.

You can catch yabbies and freshwater shrimp using green gum leaves and also velvet soap . Not sure about if crays would go for it . Apparently it's the oils that attract them

Word up Homie! great video. We did some yabbing at Dartmouth last week and used dogfood and Samba liver, i reckon what you say about the liver is true it works fantastic at the start then loses it's effectiveness after a while i think the dogfood was not initially as good but lasted longer, we weren't expecting much being the wrong time of year but we got about 40 yabbies, great fun! I would assume Yabbies and crays would like the same baits or do you see any difference?

    • @robbiefishing
      @robbiefishing  3 ปีที่แล้ว

HOMIE.... I was wondering how you went. Jenson invited me along but I couldn't get away.
That sounds awesome. Looks like I missed out. Maybe the water is a bit warmer down deeper?
I reckon crayfish and yabbies are very similar to be honest. I know different species of crustacean eat different foods, but I reckon yabbies and crayfish here seem to have very similar eating habits.

Hello Robbie. Mentioning brains, the Native American people would use the brains of a deer, etc, to tan the animals hide. It was stated that the animal had enough brains to tan its own hide. Brain tanned buckskin becomes soft and supple, to make good clothing.
