IELTS & TOEFL Writing: What Is High-end Vocabulary?

- Many test takers make the mistake of thinking that the words that will get them higher scores must be long, multisyllabic, academic or technical, or very rare words. This is not the case.
Examiners don’t want to see that you memorized an AWL (Academic Word List). They do want to see that you can use less common words and that you can use words naturally in the correct context. Words like plethora, amalgamate, myriad, and others will most likely hurt your score rather than help it.
In this video, we look at a few examples of words to avoid using in your IELTS or TOEFL writing, including in the essay, as well as 7 words that you can and should try to use correctly.
The 7 words we will look at in terms of definition and contextual use are court, gauge, rein, sway, tweak, cite, and flock. Examples sentences are included for each word.
You can also use these words to add to your idea bank collections or word lists.

I prefer to aquire vocabulary through the context. Absolutely, learning a language , especially, in advanced level, depend on higher order thinking skills. The single most important thing to remember is context. Context matters, if it's out of context it sounds wrong even if you can use the word to mean the same thing.
For example:
A plethora of antibodies swimming around my immune system helps to keep my body working at optimum performance level.
Plethora hands make light work.
The use of the word is correct in meaning for both sentences, however only one has correct context and grammar.
Understanding the contextual meaning of a word makes it's use ok. Especially if you've overused many 😉. This is part of why English is such a complex language to learn.

I think memorization of words is not a bad thing until someone use them correctly.
If a person is trying hard to achieve more score in IELTS than the others and his/her essay is distinguished having high end vocabulary -which is correctly used- as compared to the commonplace words used by the others, why would the examiners give him/her lower score?
Isn't that sound biased where the examiners would grade based upon their assumption about memorization or their negative feelings and not the content itself?
If the usage of high end words is considered so bad, why the words even exist?
Without memorization, is there any other way to retain the words in memory? Simple words are also in our mind just because of memorization.
Content and its quality should be graded rather than the grading done based on examiner's thoughts and negative feelings or disliking high-end vocabulary or thinking about someone's memorization.
I agree with you. However, it is not uncommon that many test takers just memorize big words out of context, trying to impress the examiner. After reading lots of papers with misused "high-end" vocab, the examiner would certainly hold a negative attitude towards these words. Therefore, it would be better for us to steer clear of these fancy words as well as to substitute them with everyday word used in an interesting uncommon way as Adam was showing us in the video.

In every word, I think we first memorize then use it.
Well explained , pandering rhetoric won't lead you anywhere. Not a fan of adjectives while pouring down thoughts into paper. Strong verbs or collocation hands-down beats these fancy colloquial that makes no sense and hurts your score. Deconstruct and frame your ideas simplistically. You will complete your terms with flying colors.

RBQITEC if you know how to use it correctly, then you should be fine.
Fashion magazines use this word quite oftenly! Plethora of shades, plethora of possibilities, etc. I think Adam's advices here are specifically for a test, not for a day-to-day conversations. I love this word either))

I just took it haha. My writing question was "reading stories in books for children is better than watching television and playing computer games. To what extent do u agree/disagree". I managed to squeeze in one word in this lesson haha, I wrote" Spending too much time on TV and games would mean COURTING danger"😂. How high-end it sounds🎉🎉

Good words but one is regular newspaper reader he comes across these words very often.
I think an important point to note is that the list of words Adam suggests you don't write are "favorite" words of candidates and this is why they might seem memorised. A plethora of candidates are memorising a myriad of these words to alleviate their low score. These words have become IELTS cliches {overused words].

It's the smallest form of a word. Suffixes and prefixes are a type of morphemes called bound morphemes. In other words, it can't be a word on its own it has to be bound to the word, ie can't, can is your base word and t is the suffix, t on its own doesn't make a word so it is a Bound Morpheme.
Unbound morphemes are examples that are stand alone words as well as being a prefix/suffix, eg can is the unbound morpheme in can't.

In this sentence, I got from the newspaper as well as I have a doubt. I studied normally
1) I have seen
2)he has seen
3) I had seen.
But this case, the sentence is confusing me because:

2)Once he was done he realised that the walls were all plain and white.
