If the falcons viewed penix as QB1 or QB2. You draft him. It's as simple as that. Letting a more pro ready qb sit behind a veteran is a GOOD thing. How you managed to turn that into a negative defies logic.
Falcons have a vet and drafted a rookie to sit behind him. Its as simple as that. Falcons just did what 10 other teams have already done. Regardless of if they just paid kirk or penix is older. Its still the same thing.
When you end up with the best free agent QB and your top 2 QB in the draft its by design not an error. Dear god how to people manage to crtisize a team for getting the best options available is beyond me. Its either hating or a general lack of intelligence.

When he turns out to be the best QB in this class, a lot of people will have to eat it. QB is the most valuable position in teams sports. Everyone is talking about how bad the Penix pick is for the Falcons. Well, if my memory serves me correctly, my Falcons haven't had quality QB's for since Matt Ryan left a couple of seasons ago. Despite the dismal QB play, the Falcons still almost made the playoffs. Now, we sign Cousins who is older and coming off a serious injury. We didn't have a good backup QB option for Cousins, so the Falcons took the best option available for THEM, not everybody else's opinion. Why is everyone ignoring the logic of having a good backup that will be an eventual starter? The critics act like the draft is an exact science and it's not. The Penix pick will prove it's value over time.

Penix was my favorite QB in the draft. I said if he's there at 2 then get him. I was pissed we got him at 8. Had the entire defense to choose from. I'm happy we have a QB to groom. Penix needed to be sat. He didn't need to be a year one starter. Needs to get fully healthy and work on mechanics at the pro level. He's going to be good. Capt Kirk is going to be good too. Offense... Stacked... Interior defensive line... Stacked. Line backers... Top 5 tandem. Secondary.... Suspect at CB2 and beyond. Safety... Top 3. Teams are going to move the ball on us in the air. They won't have much success in the run game. Hopefully not another year of watching QBs make crazy plays on us.

@3:55 Statements like this is why it’s always so funny listening to people who don’t actually watch your team. They said they didn’t expect Penix to be there but if he was, he was the pick. Now a lot of teams say that after that pick the guy so take that with a grain of salt. They were so scarred from the last two years and with the Matt Ryan debacle and how he left, they went and got two studs. Understand this, you don’t go from not ever having a good franchise QB to MF Michael Vick who prematurely goes TO JAIL, then hop straight to the ACTUAL best QB in franchise history for 14 YEARS, then to a carousel of the worst starting QBs in the league for two straight years. The Falcons needed a QB more than our literal two-decade long issue of not having a premier and consistent pass rusher. Now we have basically the best teacher for a developing QB, who’s technically been in the same situation. You guarantee his money, which he’s been scamming his whole career with anyway, and now he should have no issue being a mentor because it’s still his team (to lose) and he’s 36- COMING OFF A F***ING ACHILLES INJURY. Penix is NOT suppose to start this year. He’s for 2026 or a year after. We’ll have drafted a guy by then or signed Hassan Reddick. 😂 But f*** you and that pass rusher (kidding my guy 😂). Like bro, we have capable second year guys that we expect to take the jump and Grady is coming back. We also needed to solidify other defensive positions like CB2, SS, and OLB. Our owner is also old af so he wants to bring that first SB the city. Considering all that AND the Chiefs (lucky mfs) along with the Packers continued success with the formula, I’m sure you can see why they passed on drafting a pass rusher since there weren’t any on an Aaron Donald or Myles Garrett level. The Falcons should be a force for at least the next 15 years with all these first round skill positions. Also, watch Pitts finally show he’s the best TE in the league. Hope this helps.

The Penix pick was the only pick if he was available. The falcons have been atrocious at QB since Matt Ryan left and the team did a horrible job of preparing for like after Matt Ryan. They had no possible long term solution waiting in the wings and the team suffered horribly from it.
Raheem is on his 2nd job so this is it. The GM is in his 2nd hire so this is his last shot. If the draft came first maybe they don’t sign a Cousins and they take Penix but the thing about the draft is you never know if your guy will be available when you pick and the coach and front office couldn’t risk going into the season without a legit answer at QB hence why they paid a premium to get an established guy that fits their system.
Even then they couldn’t make the same mistake they made with Matt and have an aging starting QB (who is coming off an injury) with no plan for after. I don’t think the falcons were set on taking a QB but I think the idea was, if there is a guy that we love in any of these Drafts and we have the chance to take him, we do it. They had Penix graded as an Elite prospect and 2nd to only Caleb Williams and be just fell to you at 8. They were so high on Penix that when they saw him falling they tried to trade up a spot and refused to trade back a spot and I agree with their assessment, Penix has elite potential.
Ideally the falcons wouldn’t have been at the top of the draft for at least the next 3 years and even when you do have a decent pick their is no guarantee that their are prospect at the position who grade out as well or if there is a player you like and you have a decent pick, their is no guarantee you get him.
So what the falcons did was a chess move and not a checkers move. They secured the present by getting a good Vet that can help them have success now and they got their guy, who they really believe in for the future and didn’t have to throw sh*t at a wall, bring in stop gap guys , and reach for guys in the draft in order to fill the most important position in sports after the Cousins era.

JJ McCarthy is no where near as good as Michael Penix. But you would take him because he can develop for a couple of years?

Cousins record is AMAZING as a starter - IF the team he us facing has a record under .500 .....lol
He has like a 20% win rate starting against any team over .500.....it's disgustingly awful

24 old? REALLY! You got guys in college right now who are going into 7th and 9th year of eligibility. Get out of here with that nonsense.

Please never be a GM. You would burn a city down😂
Put yourself in the shoes of a GM who got hired into a situation with no future QB plan (post Matt Ryan).
Imagine you’re Terry Fontenot going into the off-season after going 7-10 for 3 straight seasons with horrendous QB play. Would any GM in their right mind go after a Jacoby Brissett or Gardner Minshew after that? HELL NO. And especially considering the amount of talent on the rest of the roster being held back by said QB play.
So what do you do? You go after by far the best Free Agent QB that was on an MVP pace before he got hurt. Sweet, now we’re a playoff team for the next 2-3 years.
But wait… what do we do after he’s too old and isn’t playing at a high level anymore? (Matt Ryan situation all over again)… We’re gonna be too good to have a good enough draft position to get a high end QB in the next 2-3 drafts, let alone a top 10 pick.
So what do you do? Take the QB that you believe can be a franchise QB at the premium draft position, because you’re not gonna have that chance again. If Kirk is not good after 3 years, and we don’t have a good succession plan AGAIN (Matt Ryan situation!), Terry will get fired over that.
So what’s the lesson here MathisNFL…?
Instead of assuming things from an outside perspective, maybe do a little more research about the Falcons situation before you make a video acting like an expert.
    Damn casual.
(And I would be more respectful in this comment, but I see the way you’re replying to other people telling them to “cope” so yeah, I’m gonna call you a damn casual lmao)
