- We get a lot of questions from viewers about how we get ready to print in our print shop. Well, today is a great day to cover that because September 21st is National Get Ready Day!
For today, we are showing every step of the letterpress printing process. The video begins with Howard rolling out black rubber base ink on the ink stone. This is done to create an even layer of ink on the stone and brayer. The remaining ink at the top of the stone will gradually be rolled out throughout the day as we’re printing.
The next step shown is setting type from the type case and then Howard sets the type on the bed of the press. He arranges furniture and quoins to lock the type up in the metal frame called the chase.
Howard then proceeds to letterpress printing the words “Get Ready,” which was set in 36 point Stymie Bold font. The printing press used is our Washington hand press, manufactured in 1852.

Printing press asmr
the ole 3 roller jobbing press has a darn good tempo
Gotta love it
Amazing, thank you for showing us how its done
The Best WAY to start today, Blessings Mister Howard, thank you, i love your job
I still recall composition from school. Be Careful Driving Elephants Into Small Foreign Garages…from the California Job Case…Zorro Let My Name Hang Over Your Picture Window.
When I was in my 20’s there was an older man who had a typesetting business who had a press similar to yours. One year at a trade expo, he gave a demo from his collection that included individual monotype mold casting. He even dressed up as Benjamin Franklin. Much of the trade history he preserved is long forgotten and lost.
So very satisfying. Thank you for sharing!
たった数文字書くだけでも、たくさんの時間と労力がかかってるんだなぁ〜
味があってとっても素敵!
Rolling out the paint got me head banging 😂
Honestly that looks like it would be really fun!
That floor!
Dear mr. Howard. I know you never make mistakes. However i am sure your more unior colleagues sometimes make mistakes. It would be great to see what could go wrong with the whole printing process.
Thank you for all your videos. Greetings from the Netherlands
I would love to see outtakes, like a compilation of them dropping things or a print that goes wonky or smears. That would be so great
I’m not allowed to post mistakes.
@@SacramentoHistoryMuseum I'm sorry English isn't my fist language. Show us what could go wrong and why things are done in this order. I do not want anyone to be put in a bad daylight
@@CakeboyRiP lol
That beat goes crazy
Beautiful!
Thank you Howard 😊👏👏. I was waiting for this video. Amazing. You could have quenched a bit more thirst by combining a wood cut out adding another line a adding a space between lines. Hoping to see that in future.
Old is gold ❤
Cool!👍
Thanks for the video ❤️
It's enjoyable to watch that roller. Just imagine doing that every working day 170 years ago. A lot of those guys worked until they died. For a lot of people there was no such thing as a retirement.
Oh my God, do you guys have some ESMR? The Sun is very good❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️
That has got to be the loudest floor boards I’ve ever heard.
Can we get a 25-30min video of this? Please 😅
Get ready for ASMR!
And now we have Laser printers for the job.
Need to oil those floor boards
What are the filler blocks made off?
The furniture is made out of wood.
