  • Performing rights organizations have been around for a very long time and consequently they carry a lot of baggage, their websites are old and clunky which make it difficult to understand what performing rights organizations actually do. I try to lay it out simply for you so if you're a musician, composer, singer songwriter or rapper I'll help you decide what performing rights organization is best for you and how you can sign with one to make sure you're getting all the music royalties you deserve.

    Can songwriters/composer forbid a singer from singing their songs commercially at concerts/cafes even though they have paid royalties to a collective management agency / PRO (performance right organization)?
    Do singers have to ask permission from the songwriter/composer before using their songs commercially even though they have paid royalties to the collective management agency/ PRO (performance right organization) ?

    I'm so confused by how performance royalties actually get triggered. Like.. how do they know when this happens, and who is doing the paying? Do they just send the artist that did the performance a little ticket in the mail like they ran a toll or something? I just don't get how that actually works. If anyone could clear up the actual mechanisms in place that lead to the payout of royalties from live performances I would really appreciate it. Also, does someone playing your song in a DJ set constitute a performance royalty?

    Thanks a lot for your an informative video!
    Here’s a one question!
    Since PRO collect a royalty for only one country, can I register to PRO for two different country?
    For example, US and S.Korea?

    • @foto21
      @foto21 3 หลายเดือนก่อน

      When you join a PRO, they do work with PROs in other country. You don't need to use multiples. However, I am a resident of the USA, but thinking of registering elsewhere because the US PROs are very busy.

    First off, thank u for the great video. I am a Canadian music producer and singer songwriter wanting to join SOCAN. Do I join the "Music Talents"? And what is "Music Publishers"?

    do the perfomer get the performing royalties too ?
    because i read a journal of james A hayes that Previously, only AUTHORS of the underlying
    musical work enjoyed public performance rights and the attendant concurrent remuneration from royalties. PERFORMERS and producers of sound recordings, under the 1997 amendments, became entitled to royalty payments from any public performance of their sound recordings per section 19 (1) of the Act.
    but when i read the canadian copyright act, i got confused .. please help me :( i did a research for my thesis of the Requirements for the law degree.. hopefully you answer..

      The performer of the song only gets royalties based on the agreement they have with the songwriters. For instance, I might sing (perform) on a song and get paid X amount of dollars for it (a fixed cost) because that's the agreement

    Does the PRO take a cut or require a subscription fee? Also, am I correct in understanding that you get paid for a live performance of your own song?

    • @mikedextro
      @mikedextro 2 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      not sure how live performances actually work when it's a bar gig without an agent where you get paid a cut of bar or ticket sales. How does anyone keep track of that?

    • @CharlesCleyn
      @CharlesCleyn  3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Hey Lovall, for that question you would put your PRO. So that would be BMI or ASCAP or another one depending on what you country you live in. Are you going with distrokid or tunecore?

    • @Dzdiaryy
      @Dzdiaryy 3 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@CharlesCleyn well i just dropped my first single but i dropped it with United Masters, and so what you’re saying is i have to sign up to BMI or ASCAP right? I live in the United States, California to be exact, which would be my best option?
