I’ve made approx. 14 quid from streams over a couple of years.. but that was automatically collected for me by the distribution company I use. So firstly, perhaps not worth me joining (especially given a relatively low number of streams) but also secondly, how would the PRS royalties differ? Does anyone know? Thanks.
But what if you were just producing for fun and have no streams, and dont want to put your music on streaming platforms...you just want TV, Video game ect placements? Would it still be okay to join?
While I understand that you must get a license or you could get a fine why does it sound like scam? How do you know what song is played in every venue around the world and thus who to pay? For example I love Elton John/Meatloaf and Queen so what if someone is only playing songs by them and they are NOT covered by you aka they have not signed up to you so I would not be covered by your license. It is all well and good for 1,000,000 artists to sign up and all pay £100 meaning you just made £100,000,000(Not for profit but you just made some). Since there is no way for you to tell what is being played in every venue around the world how on Earth can you make sure that artist X gets X amount every time their song is played? For all you know everyone is playing only Queen songs or music by an artist that is NOT signed up with you. Can you see why this sounds like a scam? If your an artist pay them £100 sounds great now tell us all how you force pubs/cafes etc £300-£600 a year to just play music in the background and then charge £15-20 PER karaoke/disco/live band. I have to pay £2000 a year to these people to play background music and do 2 karaokes a month, they have no idea what music I play nor if the music I play the artist is with them and karaoke uses no artist vocals NOR does it use the exact same music but I have to pay them £20 per karaoke.
Great info

Are there any alternatives to PRS that serve the same purpose

So you have to pay £100 separately for PRS and MCPS is that correct?
yes both cost £100 each, but BMI is free
