Fish, an obscure Scottish poet, is one one of the best song writers ever with a great voice. Misplaced Childhood is one my most favorite albums ever.

Criticism of Fish-era Marillion baffles me. Fish is probably the greatest lyricist that we’ve ever produced. Miles ahead of Gabriel. With Fish they produced 4 studio albums (and one live album) of genius. Poetry set to incredible music. Much as Marillion fans love the Hogarth era it’s the 4 Fish albums which set a benchmark never to be achieved again. Masterpieces!

    • @tommeloman6969
      @tommeloman6969 3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

Well I don’t think Fish’ s lyrics were superior to Gabriel’s but they’re definitely on the same level. Gabriel’s were weird but wonderful although probably simpler than Fish’s IMO.

I can't believe all of these Marillion-haters. In my thirty years of listening to Marillion, I've never heard so many people being so dismissive of them.
It's obvious that even Genesis was a big fan of Marillion. Tony Banks himself even collaborated with Fish several times and co-wrote a couple of songs with him. Phil Collins played drums behind Fish during a performance.
In short: Ignore these dismissive haters. Marillion has made a lot of great music, and it's ridiculous to put them up against Genesis as though they're rivals.

Misplaced Childhood, by Marillion. One of the best storytelling done with music, so it is best to see the whole album as a whole from intro to finale. It just makes sense.

  • @beldin2987

The first song i ever heared of them. I still remember when i went into the record store that had 4 or 6 record players with headphones over the racks with the LPs and they were always playing new records in an endless loop. And when i saw the cover i was directly interested and of course i left the shop with the LP.
I later also saw them 2 times life on the Misplaced Childhood and Clutching at Straws tour in Bremen. Saw also Gabriel on his SO tour in the same years i think.
And some people always called them Genesis copy, but for me they were of course heavy inspired by them, but if you listen closer they have a total different sound. Its in the end only that there are not so many band that make musik like them and so ... i mean there are surely 1000s of blues bands out there that sound way more than any other given blues band.
Whatever, i love them, but just the Fish are. I bought one more record without him, but for me there were only the good guitar solos left but else it wasn't the same without Fish.

Fish-era Marillion are a top 5 favourite band for me. So glad you got to do this one. I've seen this performed live so many times. The live version has so much more energy and emotion. Great track, although I personally prefer the later albums with Fish. Misplaced Childhood and Clutching At Straws are well worth a listen. I'd definitely do a reaction to the whole of 'Blind Curve', which is just a brilliant piece of work. Those albums stand the test of time.

Thanks for taking a listen to Marillion, in my view on of the greatest bands in the world. I’ve been a fan since around 83, they have a huge catalog of work.
The lead singer and lyricist, Fish, let after the 4th album, he was replaced by Steve Hogarth. For me this moved the whole band onto a new level.
They were also mostly responsible for the birth “crowd funding” in the late 90’s!
    A truly remarkable band :)

Remember that Marillion made 17 albums after this one, 14 with a different singer (and what a singer!) all sounding nothing like Genesis. Judging them only on this first record is like judging Spielberg’s filmography based only on Duel. Sorry but it doesn’t work.
Of course they were heavily influenced by the prog classics of the 70’s and of course Fish voice sounds like Gabriel or Collins, so what ? All you haters should better thank Marillion (along with Twelfth Night, IQ, Pendragon, Pallas etc…) for keeping the prog rock flame alive when it was going out.
JP don’t give up on them after this track. Steve Rothery had yet to find his amazing blazing guitar solo tune, check "Easter" for an example of what I’m talking about. And if you want to get an idea of Steve Hogarth vocal abilities check “The Space” ending.

As a student in the late 80s my top three were Rush, Metallica and Marillion. Alas Marillion imploded soon after. But I love, especially, Clutching at straws (album). It would be great if you check out more from this band (from the 80s). And if you want to see the impact of a change in singer/ lyricist, see 90s and later Marillion. A good starting point would be from the album Brave.

Thanks for the Marillion listen. Though I had (and have) always remained a defender of Genesis throughout their changes from progressive to pop progressive, back in 1983 or so when I heard about a new band that had arrived on the music scene that was dedicated to the old Genesis version of music I was quite giddy (which kinda betrayed my acceptance of the "new" Genesis of the time ). They were presented as a bit of "what if Peter Gabriel hadn't left Genesis, this is what they would sound like" kinda band. I quickly bought the album (still have it) and gave it a good listen but I admit that it only got a few turns. Though creative and unique, it was missing a bit of the classic influence which maybe Tony Banks of Genesis added to the band. I still like the "idea" of the band, I just never quite connected to the songs for some reason. edit: just randomly clicked on their live performance of The invisible Man : ok I take all this back...that's some good music!

Anything from The Space through Neverland to The Leavers etc. Band has made big steps away from Genesis influence of early days since then and become an independent band with its own face thanks to Hogarth. I'd suggest you The Leavers song, all five parts of it ("1. Wake up in Music" to "5. Marillion was very influenced by Genesis, so their style of progressive rock rests less in virtuosity than in does in servicing the songs. The drummer on this album, also, is much more limited in his talents than Ian Mosely. (Mosely had been Steve Hackett's drummer. Hackett, of course, was the former guitarist of Genesis.)

I loved Marillion back in the day. I remember buying this album when it came out, after seeing them play live on a TV show. I was already into Rush and Floyd but didn't really know much about prog rock. I always felt Script was their best album. It's not as polished and 'mature' as the three albums that followed it, but it's the most original, and most atmospheric. After Fish left, I lost interest. There were many comparisons made to Genesis and Van der Graff Generator in those early days, but the post Fish era band sounded completely different. They were always great musicians.

A track that is not on this album but was released at a similar time is Grendel. According to Genius.com "Grendel was the monster who terrorized the Danes in the epic Anglo-Saxon poem Beowulf". Where Beowulf follows the story of the defeat of Grendel, Marillion's version tells the story from Grendel's perspective and one of it's greatest achievements is how it manages to have you sympathise with Grendel while conversely experiencing the fear of being stalked by him. To quote the lyrics "They place their faith in oaken doors, cower in candlelight. The panic seeps through bloodstained floors as Grendel stalks the night". But the lyrics are not this song's only party piece because it is also a musical masterpiece. If there is a song to displace Genesis' Firth Of Fifth from top spot, this might be it. It makes the most of Marillion's ability to produce powerful and emotionally moving musical impacts with bass, guitar, synth and drums all coming in hard and simultaneously to create an anticipatory high while Derek Dick's lyrics create a haunting and sinister undertone. The song breaks into 4 parts and the transition to part 2 "Grendel's Journey" subly behind the scenes you can hear Grendel as he slurps and growls like a wolf devouring prey. The transition from part 2 to 3 has the most aggressive church pipe organ I have ever heard, it would put Bach's Toccata And Fugue In D Minor to shame, and that's quite an achievement! (Incidentally, listen to Toccata And Fugue In D Minor some time). Just to put home the fear in this song consider lyrics like "Hounds freeze in silence bewitched by the reptile spell" and "Stellular heavens ignore even children's cries", you can't fail to be be intrigued and fearful. If you do decide to listen to this song note that there are some sub par versions of it, ignore the version on Script For A Jester's Tear or the Fair Deal Studios Version; the best version is on "B'sides Themselves" and "The Singles 82 - 88", both an Amazon Music and Spotify. Then do the concept album Misplaced Childhood for a musical dream. And thanks for your videos.

There are two eras of this band, the early years with Fish (Derek W. Dick) as the singer and lyricist, and the much longer current period with Steven Hogarth leading the band. Of the early years, Script is good, but in my opinion the peak of that period is the opening three tracks of Clutching At Straws, which was their final album with Fish. Hotel Hobbies / Warm Wet Circles / That Time Of The Night - they all flow into one another. Fish is an amazing lyricist. You should definitely listen to all of it together. th-cam.com/video/nFQwkm_xbF0/w-d-xo.html
Of the Hogarth era, the albums Brave and Afraid Of Sunlight are their best.

Fugazi was peak Marillion for me. The rawer live versions and early cuts of "Misplaced Childhood" are better to my ears than the more polished sound of the finished album.
Never got my head round "Clutching at Straws".
Didn't really get back into them again till I heard "Easter" the first time, which was such a revelation it was like having my head whacked off and glued back on again.

Hey Justin, I think that you missed boat on the meaning of this song. The Jester part is more symbolic than literal. In my opinion, I feel that Fish considers himself as the Jester. It kinda showed in the jesterlike facepaint that he used back in the 80's. This song is really about dealing with a broken heart. This song really hit home for me because when I heard this song, I was dealing with a broken heart of my own. The writer finds himself in a familiar place, which is the "playground of the broken hearts". He has been there before, but not like this. This time he went from being engaged to be married to being single (promised wedding, now a Wake). He finds himself constantly thinking about the past, knowing full well that it's too late to change things. Perhaps he was cheated on.

Just subscribed Justin. From what I have seen so far I am not the only 49 year old English man reminiscing about his formative music :-). I always loved the lyrics of Marilion songs. And the drama of Fish’s vocals. Got hooked on your Kate Bush videos. Love the way that you analyze the songs and take the time to understand the background. By the way Kate was brilliant AND beautiful and there really was not chance for an emotional teenager in the 80’s. You had to fall in love.

Over the years I've probably listened to Marillion more than any other band. I suppose if you are going to make an in-depth study of the band then the beginning is the right place to start. For me now though this reveals the band at their most naive and derivative. The over-wrought self pity of the lyrics, though well written, is cloying. It's nice to hear for nostalgic reasons, and the performance just about carries it, but Marillion developed very quickly from this point and produced work that was much more interesting and rewarding. As far as I'm concerned, the less they sounded like Genesis the better they became.

@@JustJP Critics of Marillion mostly seem to fall into two camps: the ones who wrote them off at the beginning of their career for sounding somewhat like Genesis, and the ones who never forgave them when they stopped sounding like Genesis, especially when Fish departed the band after their fourth album. In a way Marillion are reminiscent of Rush in that they remained resolutely unfashionable, charting their own course through varying musical approaches, and more or less inventing crowdfunding along the way.

@@delorangeade Yep, 18 studio albums and still running but people always refer to the first four with Fish on vocals. That is not very fair… When Steve Hogarth became the lead singer back in 1988 (!) he was also offered to become the keyboard player for The The, one of the most trendy bands in England at the time, but one rehearsal with Marillion in their bassist’s garage persuaded him to join, even if they were one of the most unfashionable bands in England at the time (and maybe to this day 😉).
This says a lot about these guys. This band is all about music, writing good songs and clever meaningful lyrics. If I had to recommend just one song I would go with “This Strange Engine”, an epic and beautiful 15 minutes autobiographical poem about love and h (Steve Hogarth’s nickname) near death experiences.

As somebody who, in the eighties, really didn't like Marillion, I would recommend that you go deeper. The first few albums are very Gabriel era Genesis influenced, whilst still keeping their own style and sound. The had several hit songs in the UK that are worth listening to as well. Then, rather like with Genesis, the lead singer left and they had to go on. Most people think that they improved from then on, though they didn't get the chart success. Good prog serves the songs and not the artists.

Justin, here's a crazy suggestion: a song that I and many of my peers on most weekdays consider the most beautiful piece of music ever created by man or beast. (Beast included as many people enjoy whales singing.)
    Beach Boys: Surf's Up
If you only know the early BB tunes, you're in for a shock. This is a pocket symphony of melody, harmony and ATMOSPHERE. (And, incredibly, this is kind of a demo version because Brian Wilson's mental issues prevented him from finishing the Smile album.)

I'm a live music junkie. The only Marillion I own is "The Thieving Magpie", from the early era of this band. Its one of my alltime favorite live albums because of the visceral performance of the band. But I agree with others that Marillion is Genesis Lite. Lyrics are not as good. Song construction isn't as tight or as logical (if that's the right word) and certainly the musicianship is weaker.
If you are becoming as much of a prog fan as you say, Justin, you need to check out Renaissance. (I'm going to keep beating this drum) THE best voice ever in prog music. Tremendous musicianship. Great song structure. Ashes Are Burning is 23 minutes of awesomeness. Ocean Gypsy gives you are strong dose of Annie Haslam's gorgeous voice.
