Hot take but we really need more book-style folding phones in the US. When 70% of most people's day is messaging/typing to people, I'd really like something between the ice cream sandwich Fold 4 and the library book Duo 2. Something that nails the balance of a big open single or double screen, but with a single screen experience that isn't compromised.
To sum this up... "Personally this is what I want, a little thin notebook of compute power." I love my Duo 1st gen for this very reason. This device is just as relevant today in 2022 as it was on its release day. I hope Microsoft continues the innovation with this product.
The DUO 2, is amazing! I'm so happy to take regular pictures in phone mode.. And NO, I'M NOT meaning using the selfie camera, mirrored. I'm assuming it's still using the selfie camera though. I'd need confirmation though.....
I loved the concept of the Duo, since it's initial release. I held off, due to the bugs and decided to hold off for the Duo 2. I bought it the month it came out and I can say that I don't regret it. I had my doubts, due to some of the initial bugs, but it honestly wasn't enough to make it a deal breaker and with each update, just continued to improve the device. I actually fine with the Duo 2 being the only device available for the next year. I will likely hold on to mine for a few years. With Android 12L and hopefully Android 13, I think my Duo 2 will be more than capable to support my needs for the next couple of years.
Hi, I concerning buy to DUO2. I have 3 questions: 1. Can I accept a call with DUO2 closed? Making call... 2. Can I listen to a youtube music in closed DUO2 3. How long endurance of the battery is in normal use? Thanks Stepan
I bought the Surface Duo 2 when it was $1,000 and lost it a month and a half later being drunk and high in Las Vegas..... Good thing I was smart enough to get insurance on it and I can get another one for around the same price as the discounted $400 Duo 1. I got to be more careful.
I really enjoyed this video and appreciate your hitting the concept of having a dual screen pocketable device out of the park. Thanks for making this video!
In defence of the Fold 3/4 thickness, technically these devices have three screens so that you have the option to use them a normal (albeit chunky) phones. I like the concept of the Duo - its the logical next step to using two screens (the Fold and Flip feel fragile, maybe its tech from 5-10 years from now, but its like running before it has learned to walk). I wish Microsoft would show commitment to the idea, like come out and say that they are going to support them for 5+ years and not replace them every year (like they did when they went from Duo 1 to Duo 2). Many of us remember the Windows Phone era and got burned then, so coming out promising support for them would help greatly influence my investment in Duo
Your point of the toggle to turn screens on and off manually would be an awesome idea. I occasionally use it to watch videos, and if I get sick of the bar in the middle, I'll put it in "laptop mode" and watch it on one screen, and not need the other one on. I use my original duo as a productivity focused tablet, e-mail, calendar, MS Teams, light office apps work, that sort of thing. It's been great for that, but it does make me also really wish that the Neo actually becomes a thing some day, even if it came out as an Android tablet, as just a larger surface Duo 2.
@@SomeGadgetGuy amen man... Blackberrys in general. I think there is a happy middle ground on slab phones. There really is no benefit to narrow displays IMO
Surely a use case could be made for a stylus enabled flat screen case like the V60 for note phones, with a hinge design that brings the screens as close together as possible. Add a battery and maybe a notification screen and those of us who need a device that can be built to protect and enhance the phone when needed and remove when not will buy that type of accessory with the phone. P.S. it would be interesting if this case with stylus built in would work with a non stylus handset for all other models.
@11:40 YES!!!! I couldn't agree more with that. I was so sad when LG existed right after they had the best concept of dual screen/foldable phone (imo). I'm so happy that at least one company is keeping it alive (Microsoft) but I would love to see it in a midrange space again.
Many condemn Motorola for limiting software upgrades..... But Motorola has stated they don't like the software upgrades to change the experience that people bought their device for..... & I agree..... Years of security patches would be great..... But I am currently trying to refuse Android 12 on my phone's..... I very satisfied with A-11 & don't want all the potential problems that A-12 has caused all year.... That Duo 2 also seems...."Just Right"....
Hey so I'm really late to this, but I saved a completely black picture to my Surface Duo, So when I need one of the screens to turn off, I just open photos, and select that completely black picture, and then that screen is as good as off! No need for an app or anything.
I had a v60 and ordered a dual screen case recently. I wonder how it would compare to something like this for productivity. I know it has a ton media and gaming features built in but I am excited to try third party apps that use the two screens for unique use cases.
LG's take was WAY more "two phones side by side" and they don't really interact with each other at all. Things like drag and drop probably won't ever work well. The flip side, it was way easier to do things like make one screen a game controller.
I'm currently between getting a Duo and getting an s tablet to use in the same manner I would have used a netbook back in the day. If I do get it though I definitely want those composition cover. How would you rate this in 2022 as a portable productivity device
I still REALLY like it. It depends mostly on if you want to pay the higher premium to be able to put in your pocket, or if you'd be happy with a regular slate. Right now though, the Duo2 at $999 is a solid buy IMO.
What are you using for your main device I been using the duo 2 as my only phone and I love it but Bluetooth issues are really messing up my experience. But I love this device I wish it was more stable.
Smashed my v60 and got a Pixel 6. I know that the v60 was your favorite, for someone that once owned a v60 is it safe to say that going the duo way would satisfy what's missed From the v60? Or should I just get another v60 despite the death of lg and anymore software updates.
@JuanBagnell - How's it going? I'm going to go ahead and humbly ask, may I please have that surface duo 2 pen cover? I'd buy it off you if you prefer. Thanks for your time and great work!
@@SomeGadgetGuy 100% and I'm all about it. I really appreciate your reviews, but I got to say, I can't stop noticing that dang hinge (smacking) sound now 😂 damn. . .
OH NO! Does yours make that smack sound too??? Someone else said that it happened on theirs when it was new, but it wore out after a bit. Drove me NUTS...
Haha, yeah. Fortunately it's not terrible, but I do dislike the similar sound it makes to smacking when eating. I had put a hinge protector on and I think the extra thickness makes the sound more notable. But if you open it a second time it's usually gone. I'll see how the 4 holds up, lol.
Oh that's good. On TK's early Fold3 I could get the smack to repeat several times in a row before it would quiet a bit, but if I let it sit for a while it would come back 🤮
I just stopped using my Duo 1 last week after over a year of usage. Kudos to Microsoft with all of the software updates over the last year plus making the experience better the whole time. But I just bought a barely used Z Flip 3 on craigslist for $350 the other day and I have not looked back. It was a death of a thousand cuts for me. I cracked the glass about a month in and thought I could replace it, nope can't buy the glass anywhere, the community basically said 'put a skin on it' and so I did. t is a phenomenal tablet that I have used running my business but I could never get Sharepoint to work correctly on the phone sure it's difficult supporting apps across different devices on Android, but you would think that they would optimize for their own hardware, while it worked fine on my non work Pixel 6 and LG V60 before that. I don't have good service with any carrier where I live so I need to use Voice over WIFI often to make calls at home, and of course because I bought an unlocked Duo I cannot use voice over wifi with my carrier. So I am using an overall less useful phone now with the Samsung because I was dropping or plain failing to receive important work related calls when at home and so goodbye Surface Duo. Maybe I'll try to get my hands on a Duo 2.
@JuanBagnell If you want to use the camera with one screen off you should take a look at the Duo Mono app. Works perfect for this excat scenario for me.
Honestly sort of wish that more companies would follow this trend. Get more use from the device that they have rather than pushing iterative versions out every year. Optimize for the current SOC more rather than constantly throwing a new processor in just because one is available.
I mean look at the Pixel 6 series. They didn't even get the optimization fully honed in until months after the device had launched. Now it finally feels like the device that it always should've been. Especially with Android 13 beta.
It's true for all phones. Look at the months of multiple OTAs from Samsung this year. The S22 was in a MISERABLE state at launch, and Sammy is facing class action lawsuits over the advertised claims (lies) about performance. It's gotten a little better recently, but improvements have NOT been as beneficial as what we saw on Google delivering their FIRST generation of SOC.
I have an iPhone right now that I absolutely hate is the 11 I’ve always been on Samsung, Motorola or LG. Really been checking this out in the last week or two. I’m interested in it but haven’t made up my mind if I want to go to it.
I agree so much with how you presented “shortcircuit” I can’t watch most of their videos. They are either straight up commercials (sponsored videos) or misrepresenting the product… what value do they add?
Now that we have Windows on ARM, Microsoft should have no problem relaunching the Lumia lineup with modern SoC and Windows 11 ARM. 11 out of 10 I'd buy one! After all, it has been proven that even the Lumia 950 and 950 XL can run Windows 11 ARM.
I just received a Duo 2 and an S22 Ultra. Want to sell one and keep the other but not sure which one I want to keep. I'm so used to a slab form factor so I'm leaning towards the Samsung. However, I got the Duo 2 for such a great price (sub $1000 Canadian for the device, slim pen 2 and cover charger) that I want it to be my daily driver. It'll also help me stay away from my phone as I tend to use it alot. A closed device will deter me.
The pyschology on that is kind of interesting. Making it a deliberate action to open the phone definitely helps against random time wasting. I think the Note 22 is the better overall phone, MUCH better camera, but if you aren't using the Samsung features that make the note unique...
@@SomeGadgetGuy the only thing I use that is considered a feature would be the spen, but I got the slim pen for that! I'm going to put my Sim into the duo 2 for a week. Let's see how it goes!
I do think that Microsoft is still trying to get Android 12L right for both two gen of Surface Duo. That said, if Microsoft will make a Surface Duo 3, I just hope that they can give a larger screen than before.
I totally believe both SHOULD be getting another OS update, but I'll be curious to see if they stay a generation behind Google, or jump to the current Android 13 build this year.
Current Duo 2 owner, former Duo 1 owner. This "phone" is crack for me. Can't ever go back to a traditional cookie cutter tall skinny brick phone. Almost finished making a "case bumper" via my 3D printer and it hasn't interfered with the hinge and screen at all in my testing with it.
Even if they are not the most up to date with the latest software, the quality of life improvements are more useful on just about any device. I'd rather have better functionality over the newest version of Android, Windows, iOS, etc. Using the LG Wing has given me a similar experience to what you've described in this video.
No. It matters that we credit the companies that get their first appropriately. Otherwise that means HUGE companies like Apple can just steal tech, release it at scale, and drive out competition. Like they did with health tracking on the apple watch.
I didn't think of using a duo as just a tablet. Is it possible to throw a data only sim in? I'd be down for that and disabling all the phone related apps
You already suggested that future Duos should have detachable cameras before in another video. But would it be possible to make a portable (but good) wireless module that works via Bluetooth? That automatically destroys future high-end smartphone sales, but maybe someone can just say if it's possible?
Prolly not over Bluetooth. I can activate my pixel camera through my watch. That's not great, but it's ok as a single use remote shutter.BT can barely stream high quality audio well...
If they can run android apps on windows why not bring back windows CE with apps? I need proper printing basically just a pocket size surface with a phone
The duo 2 is still my daily driver best friend. It truly is a "get shit done" kind of mobile device. There are times when I wish the gap in the middle didn't exist. But then I also use my phone 90% of the time in "Nintendo DS" mode because I have fat thumbs that need all that distance between letters to type like a normal human being.
My Samsung Galaxy ZFold2 is dying and I am scurrying around for something to replace it. I am not a phone camera typical person. And because I only want the productivity features, the Duo2 is looking really really good as an option. As you've mentioned Shane's channel, I have just watched a few of his old reviews of the Duo2 and is heading back to binge on a few more videos. I want to make the jump, but I want it to be right. Right for me. Thank you.
It's kinda tough. Coming from a Fold, you might miss Samsung's customizations. You would be adding stylus support over your Fold2 tho. It really comes down to the services you like to use, and if you're multitasking more than "single apping".
Some good choices out there. Might even consider something like a Moto and try out ReadyFor. Especially with the sale price on the 512GB model coming in close to Pixel 6A territory.
Ikr. Microsoft showed a huge potential as a legit pocket PC with Continuum. Just revive the Lumia lineup with modern SoC and Windows 11 ARM, and we're pretty much good to go.
@Faris Hanafiah and think of how much they could take over with a product like that, just at my job alone I know they would buy everyone 1, instead of walking around a plant with a giant tablet
Dude yeah, this is absolutely going to be my next phone. I'm looking to switch from the V60 with the dual screen with something new and this is the best available option
How is this to use as a daily phone? Not having an outside display is the biggest deterrent for me in not picking one up and waiting for a Pixel foldable instead. I don't make a thousand calls a day but when I do, most are one-handed affairs and I may not have the luxury of a 2nd free hand to open the device just to use it, for a phone call (making or accepting). I can just see myself getting tired of accepting that reality that this would be the norm with a Duo. But conceptually I like the deliberate two screen design of Duo split with a hinge over a traditional foldable like the Z Fold/Mi Mix/Find N which I would compare to using two separate monitors in a desktop computer setup and multitasking that way versus a large 34" widescreen monitor for instance and using Windows snapping ability to split screens that way to resemble a two screen setup.
It all comes down to how you use things and what you pair them with. I genuinely always wear a smartwatch because I hate notifications on all phones. I often have earbuds connected or cabled. The lack of an outer screen doesn't bother me because I already use accessories to fill those gaps on regular phones, and the ticker on the hinge edge is enough. .
@@SomeGadgetGuy I have played with one and only got the fold 4 because at the time it was cheaper. But it does not compare, and most of the faults you named, news mostly, I dont use anyway.
I wish there were a 3rd big player in phone OS. Apple's iOS is amazingly smooth and works almost 100% of the time no matter what but it's all locked, and Android is super customizable but updates are so scattered and Google's "we want everything about you to sell ads" is unwanted.
You're won't be a Duo 3. Duo already proved to be epic fail in terms of sales. They already canceled the Lite version and won't release any successor this year. It is just a slow unannounced death like the Windows Phone.
Not sure about that. There have been huge improvements over Duo 1 and unlike the original windows phones, they have tapped into Android Apps. Also, with Google developing dual screen capability on Android, it shows there is a market for the DUO.
@@SomeGadgetGuy definitely one more of those polish things that has made my old G8X seem more and more like an early prototype of an idea that Microsoft did a great job of implementing way better.
I watched all the duo vids. Finally pulled the trigger. After 2 days I'm returning it. What no one talks about is how poor it handles the aspect ratio of social media. Tiktok is really small and croped, Instagram doesn't show the whole video. Going full screen on tiktok cuts words or important content. The right side panel gets hot all the time. Microsoft was right, this is not a phone. It is good for business type stuff and being able to take a phone call.
Iirc, Microsoft even said that the Surface Duo is a productivity-first device with Android. After all, 3:2 aspect ratio isn't exactly what you want for mobile entertainment.
@@FAT8893 totally agree. I guess I had to try it for myself. I just found a zfold3 for 400 with a cracked front display. Samsung fixes that for 150. So total I'll be in it for about 600.

That is why I have completely stopped watching major popular channels. They don't bring much intellectual value to me when it comes to less popular brands.
Hi,
I concerning buy to DUO2. I have 3 questions:
1. Can I accept a call with DUO2 closed? Making call...
2. Can I listen to a youtube music in closed DUO2
3. How long endurance of the battery is in normal use?
Thanks
Stepan
I bought the Surface Duo 2 when it was $1,000 and lost it a month and a half later being drunk and high in Las Vegas.....
Good thing I was smart enough to get insurance on it and I can get another one for around the same price as the discounted $400 Duo 1. I got to be more careful.
drunk losing a Duo 2 is more common than you think lol. same boat but currently using a single screen phone and it suuuucks
@@israelramirez0202 Yes it does.
Thanks for not forgetting about the due and for giving it an honest look

I really enjoyed this video and appreciate your hitting the concept of having a dual screen pocketable device out of the park. Thanks for making this video!
Excellent video on excellent phones. How would you make these waterproof or water resistant? That is one thing that don't have and probably need.
Great stuff as always. I wish phones would deviate from the narrow slab aspect ratio and embrace WIDE!!! this is an underrated device.
Always reminds me how much I loved the blackberry passport.
@@SomeGadgetGuy amen man... Blackberrys in general. I think there is a happy middle ground on slab phones. There really is no benefit to narrow displays IMO
I still miss the old WinMo phones. Interesting review. Thanks!
Great review!
Thanks a lot man for your opinion and further detailed explanation... it’s what I needed I guess, I’m thinking of getting a folding phone
That's clever 👍
Very good video.
Nice Juan! 👏🏼
@@SomeGadgetGuy Even using the virtual keyboard on one screen is a gem.
@@FAT8893 Not gonna lie, I've been using that a lot with my Wing! Its basically a modern Tmobile Sidekick when used like that! lol
I’ve always been curious about the pen in your reviews… would love to get one…
Different pens for different phones. Here I'm using the MS Surface slim pens.
@@SomeGadgetGuy Cheers! Just got a Huawei P40 Pro and am curious about them. 👍🏻👍🏻
Is this good as a cell phone and would it work with AT&T?
Would it still be cool to use the first generation duo in 2022? As in, did all the bug fixes on the duo 2 also make it to the first duo?
Subscribed! good Stuff Brother!
@JuanBagnell - How's it going? I'm going to go ahead and humbly ask, may I please have that surface duo 2 pen cover? I'd buy it off you if you prefer. Thanks for your time and great work!
Hi awesome content. Question ❓ What game emulator was that.
I wasn't using an emulator? Dead cells plays natively, and guardians was streamed over Game pass.
What case do you recommend
I'm glad there are so many preferences, definitely makes the options interesting. I'm a Z Fold kind of guy, but this thing always has me intrigued.
Only way your ZFolds get better is if Samsung feels that competition. 👍
On TK's early Fold3 I could get the smack to repeat several times in a row before it would quiet a bit, but if I let it sit for a while it would come back 🤮
Would love a 2023 update video since I'm thinking on getting one and wanna know how software updates are treating this guy
I'm so waiting for Duo III
I'm really hoping for a non-Android based folding tablet in the near future 🤞
Using the Steam Deck and Chrome OS, we've got some other options for mobile computing that just need a little more polish...
I know they had some gimmicks but I became an LG fan for their dual screen. I used it like crazy.
So bummed out that no one else has tried something similar.
I definitely won't call it gimmick. It's way more useful than the hard-and-expensive-to-repair foldable screen phones.
I really find the duo so intriguing, maybe ill pick one up later this year
I still want one!
I'll check it out👍
Excellent video!
As always, a great video.
Thanks for the shout on Twitter 👍
I totally agree Juan I'd love to see win. On arm natively that makes me excited👊👊👍🤗
Honestly sort of wish that more companies would follow this trend. Get more use from the device that they have rather than pushing iterative versions out every year. Optimize for the current SOC more rather than constantly throwing a new processor in just because one is available.
Add in a yearly OS update, and all the third party app developers, and your phone really isn't running well until about 6-7 months after launch.
So true. The obsolescence strategy treats consumers like a money tree. There is pushback against that though
I don't even remember the last time I watched LTT ot ShortCircuit videos.
I am hoping they start doing real reviews when their lab is up and running. I fee l ya, there content is just so boring
I want windows phone to come back with tiles and all. But with apps too
Every day I miss windows phone...
Man! I love windows phones.

If you always use DeX on S22 Ultra, it'd be a good idea to keep it. The Duo 2 doesn't have a DeX-like feature, but it does support video output.
@@SomeGadgetGuy the only thing I use that is considered a feature would be the spen, but I got the slim pen for that! I'm going to put my Sim into the duo 2 for a week. Let's see how it goes!
@@FAT8893 I don't use dex! I'll see how I do with my Sim in the duo 2.
There's an app called duo mono that allows you to turn off one screen if you're not wanting it on.
👍
I do think that Microsoft is still trying to get Android 12L right for both two gen of Surface Duo. That said, if Microsoft will make a Surface Duo 3, I just hope that they can give a larger screen than before.
I totally believe both SHOULD be getting another OS update, but I'll be curious to see if they stay a generation behind Google, or jump to the current Android 13 build this year.
I am very happy getting a surface duo 2 today, open box, $800. Sold my Samsung flip 3. What is the best case, if any, for this phone.
The Duo 2 Pen charging bumper with a DBrand skin is probably the best bet. Duo 2 otterbox case is ok too.
How is duo 1 compared to duo 2 at this point in time? I trust your opinion. Is duo 2 worth the $600 difference?
They are basically the same phone but Duo 2 has the faster chip, the newer features, better cameras and dual speakers.
Duo 2 is 200-300 on the second hand marketplace, it’s a no brainier
Current Duo 2 owner, former Duo 1 owner. This "phone" is crack for me. Can't ever go back to a traditional cookie cutter tall skinny brick phone.
Almost finished making a "case bumper" via my 3D printer and it hasn't interfered with the hinge and screen at all in my testing with it.
Shoot me a photo when you.make it👍
Even if they are not the most up to date with the latest software, the quality of life improvements are more useful on just about any device. I'd rather have better functionality over the newest version of Android, Windows, iOS, etc. Using the LG Wing has given me a similar experience to what you've described in this video.
How sad that LG's best years of software support came AFTER they shuttered the phone division...
It’s not about who did it first but who makes it better and work well
No. It matters that we credit the companies that get their first appropriately. Otherwise that means HUGE companies like Apple can just steal tech, release it at scale, and drive out competition. Like they did with health tracking on the apple watch.
great video yet again, thank you!
👍
Have you tried the Duo Mono App blank screen
I HAVE NOT! 👀
I didn't think of using a duo as just a tablet. Is it possible to throw a data only sim in? I'd be down for that and disabling all the phone related apps
That I dont know. I just throw in my second line sim, but i RARELY ever take calls on that sim.
Great video bro
😎👍
Will these folding phones be affordable in 3-4 years? I planned to replace my phone in 3/4 years
It's still hard to tell since the rivals are still not mainly available globally.
Heck, I'd so love to have a Surface Duo running Windows on ARM. 11 out of 10 I'd buy one!
I REALLY miss the old slider keyboards on Windows Mobile phones... SIgh...
I've been daily driving the duo 2 since launch and going back to any other phone just frightens me. I need two screens
@@SomeGadgetGuy thank you Juan.
I have to also say that I am less than impress with the just released Fold 4. This is why I am looking elsewhere.
Some good choices out there. Might even consider something like a Moto and try out ReadyFor. Especially with the sale price on the 512GB model coming in close to Pixel 6A territory.
Why do we not have a "phone" that just runs windows 10 or 11 already? People have molded their phones to do it so why not just make 1?
It's killing me. Windows on ARM is getting pretty good.
Haha I'm sticking with my $100 used v60... Gotta fix the charge port so I can use the dual screen....
That is still a great phone in 2022. I myself got my V50 and its Dual Screen case last month and I'm totally loving it.
The lack of an outer screen doesn't bother me because I already use accessories to fill those gaps on regular phones, and the ticker on the hinge edge is enough. .
I have had a desire to get a Duo 2 and am even looking at one online. I like the folding design far more than the Samsung fold 4.
If you can get a good deal on one, I still think it's a CRAZY fun tablet to play with. We just know it's something of an evolutionary dead end.
@@SomeGadgetGuy I have played with one and only got the fold 4 because at the time it was cheaper. But it does not compare, and most of the faults you named, news mostly, I dont use anyway.
good stuff
I wish there were a 3rd big player in phone OS. Apple's iOS is amazingly smooth and works almost 100% of the time no matter what but it's all locked, and Android is super customizable but updates are so scattered and Google's "we want everything about you to sell ads" is unwanted.
I totally agree on waiting a year for Duo 3. It would be nice if they released new colors at minimum tho.
I REALLY want this in the same colors as the Surface laptops. At least add a blue...
I've had a duo 2 since a month after launch, and.... I didn't know the notifications dragging thing. Whoa.
Kinda fun right 👍
@@SomeGadgetGuy definitely one more of those polish things that has made my old G8X seem more and more like an early prototype of an idea that Microsoft did a great job of implementing way better.
