- Here we delve into the causes of the Ford Focus (and C-Max) power steering failure. Internal malfunction of the steering unit will prevent assisted power steering and store fault codes that often cannot be cleared.

Good video. Im going to view a 2011 tdci tomorrow, he said the power steering isn't working due to the battery needing to be changed. After watching your video, im hoping thats all it is lol.

Thanks for the great content! I Have the problem, that the power steering fell out many times for a few seconds and the battery voltage error did show up on the dash. Now the power steering is off completey and the power steering error shows up on the dash permanently. Even when I erase all error codes with my bluetooth ODB. I changed the battery, but the problem is still there. The people at ford here say that the whole control unit has to be replaced now. Is there no way to reprogram it?

Thanks for sharing it was raining & I started my car & this fault came up. It’s dry now & the fault is gone. I just replaced my battery and haven’t driven it for 10 hours after the battery replacement. Hopefully after driving for 30 miles it the fault will disappear

Hey , i have a 2013 ford focus here in canada. And after changing my sway bar end links now at low speeds and when turnin sharp my power steering will shut off for a moment untill the car picks up speed then it comes back on , any ideas?
Got MK2 focus RS. Suddenly after being sat in the garage for a few weeks on a Ctek charger I come to start it and an getting a load of codes. Power steering Malfunction, abs speed sensor front offside, rear near side failing amongst others. ABS, traction, red ! All lit up on the dash. Changed battery which I'm sure was ok anyway, didn't fix. Removed dash pod and resoldered main plug contracts. Still doing it. What can it be?
I've replaced my steering rack 3 times now in the last month. On start up, if I don't turn right, the steering is heavy when turning left next. Once I've turned left its fine again until you the car starts again. I've now got the fault code U0428. Any ideas?

Good video. 2017 Focus, Steering Assist Malfunction message, steering wheel turning but road wheels didn't! Switched off, restarted, ok, drove a short distance, stopped to reverse in drive and no connection between steering wheel and wheels again! Recovered to dealer, under warranty,no fault codes found nor reason for the fault! Key not found message has been appearing randomly since buying 6 months ago, gauges all pulse down then up every 20 seconds when switched off. Been at dealer two weeks now and still no solution. Wife was driving when this happened and is now refusing to drive it ever again. Any ideas?
2013 Ford focus no warning light about the power steering but power steering is locked due to freezing temperatures. The power steering will not unlock until the temperature of the engine gets right in the middle between cold and hot. Sometimes 45 minutes to an hour

I’m planning on picking up an early Mk3 Focus, and I was wondering if it was possible to bypass or disable the power steering either long term or short term in the event that it were to fail. Similar to how hydraulic power steering can be disabled by looping the hydraulic lines and using a shorter accessories belt.
I'd love to bypass the power steering as well. I'm going to try in the near future as mine (2014 Focus) sounds 3x too loud when in use, so I know it's going to fail me randomly at some point. If anyone knows why this shouldn't be as straightforward as cutting the belt btwn pinion and electric motor off or maybe also removing the hardware the belt attaches to, please drop some knowledge!

Hello, I had my power steering go out in my 2015 Ford Focus ST (USDM market) this morning on my way to work. After work, I tore some things apart and found that it was an 80 amp stud fuse within the high current battery junction box (the panel at the front of the battery box). I replaced the fuse and it worked fine for about 9 minutes of driving, and then it went out again, one again reading "power steering assist fault" on my dash.
What could keep blowing this fuse? I'm at a loss, thanks.
I just got a notification about this comment so I'd figure I'd update it. My buddy and I went around continuity testing all the wires and determined it had to be a short within the rack, after replacing the 80amp stud fuse again and it only lasting about 45 minutes. Granted, my battery was shot too, only holding 9V with a dead cell within the battery.
I ordered a new power steering rack from LKQ and just dropped the front subframe from the car yesterday. Upon doing so, it was clear that the harness that runs to the EPAS was rubbing on something and also was burnt. One wire that plugs into the EPAS within that harness was only half held together. Obviously that was the issue, but it was impossible to visually inspect that harness without dropping the whole front subframe. (EPAS rack & swaybar are attached to this and come out with it)

I HEARD THE SAME THING HAPPENED TO MANY OTHER PEOPLE !!, I THINK THE EXHAUST MANIFOLD BURNED THE WIRE HARNESS !!, AND OVERTIME IT BURNS OUT THE POWER STEERING MOTOR AS WELL AND IT PROBABLY SHORTENS OUTS SENSOR TO !! .
THE FORD DEALERSHIP NEEDS TO PUT A HEAT SHIELD AROUND THE ELECTRIC POWER STEERING MOTOR UNIT !! . AND SOME KIND OF SILENCE AROUND THE NECK OF THE STEERING RACK THAT GOES INTO ELECTRIC POWER STEERING UNIT !! . 🤔🤔 NO ?
My 2012 ford focus looses power assisted steering if I leave the car running without moving or I’m in stop and start traffic, but if i keep the car moving, particularly on the motorway the assisted steering won’t fail. If the issue had been triggered prior then I drive it at +40mph for a consistent period of time the assisted steering will return.
The fault code is always a communications fault reading.
Thoughts?

Is this a faulty rack or a software problem and also would a new rack have newer software on it TIA

I’ve had the low battery voltage error before but was able to set the unit right with IDS. The issue is intermittent when the weather is hot. Since battery performance is degraded in extremely high temperature should I replace the Ford OEM battery with something better?
Hi. If the battery health isn't good in high temperatures and that is when you are experiencing the error, then we would recommend replacing the battery yes.
@@Ecutestinglimited I found if the car charges the battery greater than 80% as reported by ECU I have issues. I make sure it can't charge past that point by having a dashcam on in park mode when not driving.
This is probably a dead post, but... I have 2013 focus SE 63k mi. I was attempting to clear all of the battery connection points of paint and caused a spark under the hood. I subsequently removed the battery lead, finished up, put everything back together and now have no power steering and it wont come out of park. The day before everything was perfect, no noises, leaks, no warnings of any kind. checked the f40 fuse, it's fine.
Our C Max has just had a third steering rack fail. The most recent failure was preceeded by several months of occasional failure of power steering on start up. After restarting the power would return. The battery was replaced as a possible cause but made no difference. Could something other than water be causing the failure given that there are never any warning codes or lights triggered?

Hi, thanks for the kind words. The fault codes in the video should be the same for a C-Max yes. And if you have replaced the battery and are still having the fault codes appear, then it is likely that your steering rack is water damaged and may need to be replaced.
@ECU TESTING thanks for the reply, I had car plugged into came up with u3000 control module, so I guess it's rack related ☹️ can you just replace the module?

@@brookado Unfortunately U3000 usually indicates a water damaged torque sensor on the module side of the rack, and we aren't aware of a company who will repair just the module. I have a 2014 MKS power steering problem
After an alignment (wanted to get the steering wheel back to center) from an independent shop, the steering was darty and unpredictable in certain situations. After turning and trying to come back to center, the steering wheel would be crooked and then as it tried to get straight the car's wheels would dart either direction. While making a lane change, the car would dart further into the lane then I was telling it to. The Dealer is saying I need to spend $3,000 because my steering angle sensor is having a hard fault. They want to replace the rack and pinion?? Any help is appreciated. I simply can not afford this and have no idea what to think.
Hi Ron, apologies for the delayed reply. Unfortunately it does sound like your steering rack is faulty and will need to be replaced. My Ford focus 2014 was having the scrappy noice when steering, but today suddenly the steering wheel is block and shows a message on the screen about a direction malfunction. Is it the same rack? Should I replace it? And where can I find the part with a not so expensive price. Thank you

We believe your 2014 Focus will have the same steering rack as the one shown in this video, however if you are looking at buying a replacement then we would always recommend checking your part number matches the new rack to confirm this. Are you able to get any fault codes from the vehicle to confirm what the fault could be? Hi mate, I need a help out here, I’ve got a Ford focus zetec s 1.8 sport (2010) start showing battery light, after that traction light, abs on , and right after steering malfunction, steering got strong as hell, I stop the car, windows can’t barely move, all lights on dash came on, car engine running poorly, idle low asaf ended up stalling . Do you think is the issue that you describe on the video?
It could be a problem with the power steering unit, however we would recommend scanning the vehicle for fault codes to confirm this. If your battery light is also appearing then we would recommend getting the battery tested for state of charge and state of health, as it could be causing all the other symptoms you mentioned.
My Ford focus 2011 power steering malfunction problem was fixed by replacing the battery with a new one and doing a software update.
Mine is 2012 ford fusion SEL and it shows the battery indicator light on and after a day the steering got stuck on road.

Hi Michelle. If the issue has only been intermittent, we would recommend checking the batteries state of charge and health first as this could be the cause. My steering rack needs to be replaced on a 2012 Ford Grand C-Max due to getting the error code U3000:53 Fault Code. I have purchased a reconditioned steering rack and will fit it shortly. One potential issue my mechanic told me, is the alternator is charging the battery at 14.9V (sometimes up to 15.1-3) I believe the normal tolerance is 14-16V. Although he said this could be the Ford Smart Charge system for higher voltage. The battery is only just over a year old and has been checked and working correctly, it is a genuine Ford battery. The alternator was taken out and tested and that had no issues. Do you think a voltage around 15 would have any impact on fitting the new steering rack? I'm concerned this would cause new fault messages and cause the steering rack to fail again leaving me with a new bill to pay. Which is something I don't need this time of the year. Cheers
The battery reading 14.9v when the alternator is charging it with the vehicle running is a normal reading, so it should have no impact when fitting a new steering rack.

Hi. Those fault codes normally indicate a problem with the power supply to the power steering unit. We would recommend checking your cars battery for state of charge and state of health, and potentially replacing the battery if required. I have a 2012 ST and had the problem maybe 2-3 times intermittently and I just turned my car off and on, than the power steering was gone completely. I’m not getting and error code just the message power steering malfunction. Do you think it would most likely be the battery?

Hi, my daughters 2017 Ford Focus have her a "steering fault" warning and then a "steering loss stop safely" and she lost power steering. I stopped at part store and with two different scanners checked the car but came back with no malfunction codes. Any ideas? Warning still says steering loss but no codes show up on scanner. You need a modified ELM327 with the HS-CAN switch specifically for Ford. Once you have that use ForScan and you will be able to read the error codes. Generic tools will show no codes as they don't access the HS-CAN bus.
@@Ecutestinglimited Hi, So the shop ran a scan and found "C102D - 00 - High Friction In Power Steering". He checked the fuses and reset it and now the code is gone and the steering is back. Thoughts? I don't want to have my daughter driving and have it happen again. Mechanic is not sure what to do with it now. Said he drove it all over and seems fine.
@@l8ndadgmail Hi. The fault code you have mentioned normally indicates a water ingress issue around the module side of the steering rack, caused by excessive mechanical resistance while steering. However, if you have driven it and the power steering is still working, it could potentially be the fuse causing the fault code. However if it is a water ingress issue then the fault will re-occur and there is no guarantee that the issue will not happen again.
Hey, I have the power steering fault message and no power steering at all. Hasn’t gone out intermittently at all, just went to go drive my car one morning and the power steering is gone, tried driving it around the block to see if it came back, no dice. I have had the neighborhood rabbit chew up wires in my engine bay before, but the chances of that feel astronomically low. Any ideas?
Hi. Are you able to scan the vehicle for any fault codes? Without that it would be difficult to diagnose what the cause could be, and the codes could show a that there is an incorrect voltage being received by the EPS which could cause the issue. We would recommend checking the car batteries health as well, even though it is unlikely in your case as it is normally an intermittent issue at first. However it is the easiest thing to check.
It unfortunately sounds like either the belt inside the steering column has broken suddenly, or damage to the torque sensor etc, which will mean the steering column will need replacing/re-manufacturing. But I hope it is the neighbourhood rabbit so its a less expensive fix for you! Thanks

I do not have any fault codes coming up on the dash, but I do have a strange problem every cold morning the steering wheel is locked and cannot be manually turned until the car has warmed up for at least ten minutes. Could this be a simple battery issue or are we talking a complete rack and pinion replacement?

Hi my mom hit something on the highway it didn’t hurt the powersteering rack but now the dash says no power steering or fault and it won’t work at all I did clear the codes and it worked for a hour then came back any ideas ?
Hi. Are you able to scan the vehicle for any fault codes? If not then it will be hard to diagnose an exact cause, and it could be that the accident is unrelated to the fault. 2009 focus zetec power steering light comes on when car is started then goes out after a few minutes yet car seems fine ! Any ideas please

Hi. The code C102D is usually caused due to water ingress occurring on the module side of the steering rack, which causes excessive mechanical resistance. If water ingress has caused the fault then unfortunately it will re-occur resulting in you needing to replace the steering column. Apologies.
C102D-00 2012 focus, I had to use arm power steering to get my car home.

I have a power steering fault in my own. But I’m not getting any diagnostic codes at all. I’ve tried pulling fuses, disconnecting the battery to reset the electronics. Any ideas😕
Hi. Without any fault codes it is difficult to say what could be causing the fault. Is it just the fault warning message you are getting or is the power steering not working i.e difficult to turn? Have you checked the batteries health? If it is an old/faulty battery it could be causing the fault to appear intermittently, otherwise it may be a problem with the power steering pump or the rack itself. Cheers

why can't I repair the steering rack, I do have a Powersteering failure, on the dash instrument panel, showing up and ..
Hi. Unfortunately if the error is being caused by a water ingress issue then the damage is usually none-repairable. There are other things that can cause a powersteering failure, such as a faulty battery, so make sure to complete a thorough diagnosis before condemning the unit. Do we have to program the new steering rack to the car and if so can it be done with Forscan or absolutely have to go to a dealer?

We had a guy change the steering rack , and we simply took it to a shop where they did an alignment (it was badly needed) It worked fine for over 2 years and it failed again. Sitting in the garage now, gonna try and do the replacement myself this time. Ford made a piece of junk with this focus.
Ford is wrong for that, that's a poor design WHY WOULD SOMEONE DO THAT OOOHHHH JUST TO MAKE MONEY,

If there is water in the steering motor can you not just separate it until it dries then put it back together or does it have to be replaced?
Hi Cole, unfortunatley water ingress will cause irreparable damage to the internals so a replacement would be required

Hi. Unfortunately we normally see the U3000-53 fault code when water ingress has damaged the module side of the steering column beyond repair. However as this isn't a product line we re-build, you may be able to seek help from a power steering specialist.
Hi .I have just replaced the rack ..how ever I can not clear the codes what so ever . All though all steering is back I still have the codes up...how can I clear the u3000:53 ..I have scanned multiple times and can not erase it ..heeeeeelp please

Hi. The OBD2 scanner being unable to detect the power steering module is unfortunately a common sign of a failed unit due to water ingress.
Cuz they're part of the same class that Chrysler students went Town & Country computer is in the wheel well for real

So if this part gets fixed whos to say the same issue wont occur again if it was down to poor design, and if ford have come up with an Improved part then they knew the part is crap and shoukd have recalled cars to be fixed

Unfortunatley this is likely the case. You may be able to get the unit re-built by power steering specialists, however we cannot confirm this as we do not service this unit.

Yeah stay away from focus
I wouldn’t say to stay away any more than any other car. Even the legendary Toyota 4AGE had oil burning issues. Power steering is just the Focus’s Achilles heel. Same for the Automatic transmission. If driven carefully, they can last quite a while. So long as you drive it like a manual and not like it has a torque converter.
Bad design fault and not cheap I had it on a 2006 and that was reconditioned at a cost of £440.
