Adding the new fish without quarantine is much worse.
Water quality can be controlled with a well sized filter, more water changes and less feeding. An outbreak of a disease is much harder to control.

Very true its hard not to buy more fish when at the store ive had this issue myself a while back everything was going fantastic it was my guppy tank and i was too impatient getting them in the new tank, it was still cycling but nearly at the end of it and everything was fine when i added them but they started breeding like crazy and the filter couldn't handle the bio load. Even tho we learn from our mistakes we still tend to continue to make them just gotta urge yourself not to and do this carefully and strategically.

I remember having an aquarium when I was growing up as a kid. I remember feeding them, taking care of maintenance items, maintained the canister filter, etc. As a kid, my dad even bought me exotic fish, like a Pangasius Shark, Silver Arowana, and an Albino Pleco. All of which grew very large and lived a very long time. Fast forward to couple months ago. Setting up a new aquarium and went straight to the pet store to get some fish. Too much fish. Guy there said, "here, put this water conditioner in your water before you put the fish in the tank." He gave me the bottle of water conditioner along with all the fish I chose out. Went home, added the conditioner, equalized the temperature in the fish bag and then let them loose. They was so happy and eating and. . .in 2 hours all dead. WTF. I don't recall keeping fish this difficult. Maybe in Hawaii the tap water quality is much better. I didn't even measure water parameters when I was a kid. Today, now my tanks are finally cycled, I'm just treating my (new) fish to the red gill syndrome, of which they're healing up very well (as for the first batch of fish, I'm so sorry you came home with me. The pet store gave me a full refund when I brought back the dead fish and my receipts). Going through the process, I've learened so much about the cycle, nitrites, ammonia and nitrates. I think I've learned way too much about ammonia than I would like. Hard lessons, but now I'm enjoying the hobby.

Added a dozen Neon Tetras to my my 29-gal, which already held three Tetras and two Parrot Cichlids. Apparently the bacteria colony was well-established--I believe in heavy filtration... from experience--because they acclimated easily and I didn't lose any. That is, except for the other dozen lost in quarantine, because I didn't give the tank enough time to cycle and establish itself.

I stocked my tank with about 65 to 70 small fish, Hengli Rasboras, Rummy Nose Tetras, Cardinal Tetras, Hillstream Loaches and some shrimp. I did this over a period of about three to four months, I added the fish 15 to 20 at a time give or take. I understand how the nitrogen cycle works and knew the bacteria in my system would not be strong enough and would struggle to coupe with new arrivals. So to deal with this when I added the new fish I also added extra bacteria (Fritz Enzyme 7) to help boost bacteria levels up until it balances itself out (I use 1 large bottle of bacteria). This practice has worked well for me, I lost no fish or plants. Tank is a 90 gallon with about 25 to 30 gallon water volume in sump and it's a planted tank. Plants help a lot too, plants and fish all doing well. It's all about maintaining that balance, you need to understand and stay ahead of your system to achieve that. My advice is get a good understanding of what the nitrogen cycle is and how it works. Cheers all and happy fish keeping!

*sigh* back in the early 90s, I “accidentally” fell into fishkeeping when I rescued a salamander I found frozen into a bucket of water. I borrowed a tank to make a wet terrarium, it was decided that some guppies might be nice, and before too long I hand a nice little diverse community. Kinda an au natural setup that was almost self sustaining (at least, someone was always busy pulling bloodworms out of the gravel). Until on a whim “Hey! That wee crayfish looks AWESOME!”… within hours, all my plants had been shredded to mulch, and I mean *all* of them… all the shrimp were gone, the snails dug out of their shells, and I got home to find it ripping the top shell off the mini fiddler crab like the top off a pizza box… *sigh*. The fish proper were fast enough to avoid my disastrous lack of judgement, and when I coaxed the salamander out of his cave, I discovered he was missing part of his tail, poor thing. Off to a new home with that ravenous beast immediately.

Like the video. Do you have suggested guidelines as to determine how many fish to add at a time? What factors influence a system's ability to adapt, size of filter, media type, size of tank, etc. Do you recommend any additives to aid this, I.e. Stability? Maybe this would be a good follow up for this video. Thank you!

Heres what I do if I am going to add a large amount of fish to my tank.
    1. I do a water change 2 or 3 days before I buy
    2. I add extra bacteria
    3. I make sure I do not over feed
This has always worked for me and I have added up to 10 fish with no losses

Back in November I decided I wanted a tank again since I was retired and needed something relaxing. I researched for weeks and my daughter bought me two books for Christmas. I watched video after video after video from you, Pecktec, AQ co-op, and many others.
I took this slow as money permitted too. Got a deal on a 29G with stand and some accessories. I then ordered 3 bags of Eco-Complete, put it in with the decorations and let it sit for a month till payday. Came back and added here: I just remembered I had put some Flourish tabs underneath. Ordered a Tidal 55 along with a ceramic heater. Added charcoal and let that run for another month.
I bought a package deal on plants from whom shall remain nameless and they all died except for one Amazon sword.
Everyone kept saying “When you gonna get some fish?” and I told them it had to get established first.
The plants started dying. Had the water tested. All good but just had to adjust the Ph. Bought two guppies to start to see how they would do.
All was good after a few days and slowly started adding fish a week at a time. Now I’m at 20 fish and holding till I can make a trip to the big city.
April 16th and all is lovely. Crystal Clear.

Newly bought plants "dying" is normal. They were often grown emersed (not under water) and will get rid of all the emersed grown leaves once they are submerged (under water). This process is also known as melting. If you still have the roots of the plants, leave them in your aquarium and they will most likely grow again.

If you get the majority of your stock in at the start, you are also only likely to add 1s and 2s further down the line.

Just like human population explosion in a huge city. We all choke to death and there is no sight of relief by stopping breeding like rabbits, the same happens in home aquariums. Overcrowded tanks in a store are fine but at home there is a rule on how many fish and how big a tank. For small fish in communities the safe number is 200g of fish for 50 gallon tank. 300g of fish for 80 gallon tank. 400g of fish for a 100 gallon tank. For medium fishes in communities the number by weight is different. If fish are 2-3 inches long then 25 different fish are the max for a 50 liter tank. Adding another 15 and it becomes a crowd. I am sure the store owner/stockist should have told you that. Overcrowding increases so many things, water parameters need weekly check ups, filters changed more often, substrate syphoned more often, diseases will run amok and fish getting sick more often in a pool of their own waste. I owned an aquarium store and know about overcrowded tanks in homes. But, like I said, in a store overcrowding is not a problem because most fishes in tanks will be sold within days and fish already are subjected to some stress but needed to be kept calm. Water changes and maintenance is done almost daily. So, no need to worry about store fishes. But home aquariums? You'll find out soon enough when you add dozens of different fish in a community.

Zebra Danios are actually quite nasty and have been known to attack and hound tetras and other small fish. Not the placid community fish as some would have you believe.

Ah so thats how all my tetras and other small fish died. We got like 13 neon tetras and few guppies and some molly's all at the same time. We have a 10 gallon and had 3 gold fish first before we dumped all the other fish.

In Europe we use (heavy) planted tanks, for example i have 80 litres (21 gals) where I have 10 zebra danios, 6 pepper cory, 6 ottos. No problem there, I only change 10-15 litres of water per 7-10 days. Czechs says "Fish tank starts with plants". And they are superpower in this hobby. Cycling heavy planted tank is so easy guys, everyone who start aquarium, f*ck amonia and bacteries in shops. Just plant, wait 3 weeks and put there 30% of your desired fishes. After week, buy more, and than if everything is ok, buy rest. Your fishes will be happy in heavy planted tank.

    Nice video!
It's true, it's a risk for that to happen.
However, doubling the bioload isn't dangerous in and of itself, as long as the tank and filters are able to handle the total bioload.
The bacteria can double in 1-2 days, so if you do 25-30% water changes the first 3-5 days and don't change the feeding amount until the second week with the new fish, there is basically no burning fuse.

I see this is old, so I sincerely hope Cory has realized hard tacos are an American thing since this. Actual authentic tacos are "soft". 😂😂😂 The difference between a taco & burrito is size & what goes on it. I was raised in Dallas & married to a Latin gentleman for a couple of years, many years ago. His momma, who didn't even speak English, taught me how to make many authentic dishes. I never could make tortillas & miss those so bad. 😢

So, if you DID buy too many fish at once, what should you do to diffuse the bomb? More water changes? Add bacteria from a bottle?
I have an established 15 gallon tank that had 3 big angel fish. I moved them to a bigger home. The only fish left in the tank were 3 corys. I bought 3 tiny corys and 3 danios at once.
Any advice on diffusing the bomb?

I just got 8 Cardinals and was told if you have 10 fish already might only want to 2 groups of 4. You can 6 for the sale and They'll probably be fine. If you're going to do 6 why not go with the 8 you originally planned. Ok 8 it is.

One rule I have stood by over the years is buying in thirds. If I want to add fish or start a new tank I get the fish in 3 separate Purchases. At least a week apart from each order. I have had really good luck and have not lost fish that way.

This was super helpful! I unfortunately did this because I didn't know better and everything in my tank started dying including my Betta, which is why I wanted a large tank for some tankmates for him. I couldn't figure out why the ammonia levels were high and how to fix it because nothing worked, chems, water changes, nothing. I'm even struggling with whether or not to try and keep a tank anymore after losing Nidavallir (my betta) all I wanted was a nice tank for him and some friends and I messed it all up. If anyone actually takes the time to read all of this and I decide to try to repopulate my tank, how many fish are safe to put in at once? And how long should I wait until I add more? I have a 15gal.

Ha! How did you know exactly what I did about a month ago, for exactly the reason you gave? Bomb went off within a week. Not only did I lose about half the new fish, but massive algae growth. That little impulse cost me several weeks of water changes, cleanings and rebalancing. Lesson learned.

So much easier to cycle if you already have a couple of tanks... Just get the bacteria from the cycled tanks... I'll then test and change the water twice a day, and add fish to the new tank once I get good readings.. And I'll still test the water twice a day for the next few days, changing the water as needed (10-,25% watwr change) to guard against a mini spike

There was no such thing as a nitrogen cycle when I was a kid, lol, there were no problems.
We never put too many fish in because the fish were expensive, that is a self regulating mechanism 😂

I’m looking into getting a betta and then adding a small schooling fish like a Tetra or Pygmy Cory. In order to have a good school I’m thinking about getting 7. How do I make sure this doesn’t happen, when I get the 7 schooling fish. If I add them in I’m a group of 3 and one in 4 will that not stress them out... especially with a betta
