I keep bees and do construction in southern oregon. Being in a bee suite is no joke in hot weather. You are a strong man. Thank you for your info and experience. Our bees have been doing well this year so far. I hope your bees are too.
People keep telling me how strong I am. I cycle alot up steep hills, but on a cycle even though you are peddling hard, you have a wind created by your speed. Under the bee suit...zero!!
I started with only mediums 5 years ago. I was a beekeeper in Germany back in the 90ies. I was so surprised when I saw the two different sizes here. I would do all deep frames, but my back says no.
I decided from the start to use 8-frame medium boxes for everything. You could transition to mediums by selling your deep frames as deep 5 frame nucs and replace with mediums. Just cut off the bottoms of your deep boxes to the medium dimensions. You end up with a 3 in shim that can be used lots of places in the apiary as feed shims etc. Your back will thank you. Love your videos keep them coming.
Thanks David. At 67 starting bee keeping last year I was fortunate to have a mentor talk me into using all mediums. I researched bee keeping for many years but got real serious about the research 2 years ago. Some how I didn’t pay attention to how much the boxes weigh when full of honey, nor did I realize how much honey can be collected per frame. Really glad I took the advice of using mediums for all my equipment. Cheers
David, YES it is warm and humid today, almost 100 heat index BUT on the big river nice breeze. You MUST take breaks every 10 to 15 minutes plus hydrate!
I use 1 deep and 1 medium for my brood boxes, but have considered switching to all mediums to make it easier to swap brood frames. I know a beek nearby who uses only mediums both for flexibility & weight reasons and has great success.
I just bought a double width "long" National Brood box, to have as my base brood box, and then a brood box and 3 supers in parallel to each other on top of that. Excited to see how that plays out
I live in South Georgia about 35 miles south of Atlanta about 1 mile west of the Flint River . It has been so hot here , that I park my truck by my hives with the AC running and take a “ cool down break “ about every 10 minutes . I can feel your heat stress . 👍
David, I’m sure your sister the retired nurse would tell you to stay hydrated and pass on the hive inspection in that kind of heat. Some things are not worth going to the E.R. For. Be careful and take care of yourself.
Ha David it is bad here as well I got over come about a week ago the heat is just unbearable here. I do my bees in the morning just for a little while then I have to quit, I get to feeling sick I enjoyed your video. Hope you and Sheri have a Blessed week
If you mix boxes (presumably mediums) between brood and honey supers, how do you ensure that frames used previously for brood during varroa treatment don't end up as honey frames? (UK based beekeeper using Nationals).
I've been keeping bees for 14 years (not counting when I did it with my dad as a teenager) and I use all 8 frame mediums. So much easier to move around but I'm in California so the winters are not as drastic nor the summers as hot as you have. You were making me sweat just watching! I highly recommend all mediums.
I guess I'm not sad when it happens because of the reason you stated unless a beekeeper lives in a populated area, then it's best to avoid swarms going out into the population of people
Hi David, loving your video as ever from here in the UK. Let’s me first say how sad for the US of that awful attempt to eliminate Mr Trump on Saturday. On bees I have a hopelessly queenless hive. I do have 3 capped over queen cells. Do I prick out two cells to let one survive , but which one? OR do I let the three hatch out and leave them to fight it out land hope that she completes a mating. All the best to you and thinking of all the USA. CHARLES
Hey Charles, good to hear from you and thank you for the good wishes. I too hope all goes well with your capped cells. I'd leave all three and see who wins.
Thanks for all your videos i watched most of it . i started watching last year and started beekeeping this spring i have 2 hive and 2 nuke. i did see queen cup at 4:46 is it ok to not chick it ?
Tip number 6 about a failing queen made me think about mine. The queen seems to not be doing so well because I haven't seen eggs in about 3 weeks. The bees also don't seem to be building towards the other empty frames. Could my queen be slowing down because there's no established comb in the other 4 or 5 frames?
I have the hive on a forested property in Ontario Canada. There's all kinds of flowers like; white clover, black-eyed susans, columnbine, bergamot(i think). Lack of resources is a possibility but I can't say for certain. I did an inspection about 30mins before writing this comment, and I might have seen some eggs on the original brood frames, and maybe some larva where the bees are slowly drawing comb. I'm going to look again tomorrow and take some pics to see if I see anything.
I suggest inspecting your brood area every two weeks so that means you'll have to temporarily remove the supers in order to get to the brood area then place them back on when the inspection is over.

Yes, I love mediums 😃
Thanks for the tip you have helped me and my bees so much

I know, I'm starting to love the idea. Maybe I should saw the bottoms off the deeps and get them to medium size if it doesn't ruin the handles.

That will be interesting to see.

Crazy, it finally cooled off.

So, so true.
"This is day two.. 😂 keep it up, it's apriciated!
3rd video out today, I'm doing it 🤞

Hello and best wishes to you in Texas. It cooled off today!!
I prefer to stick to a single size box for brood and honey supers. Ease of using assets, flexibility, get out of trouble easier, ease of buying kit.
I used to run two deeps. This year, I started switching to one deep and one medium.
I like that too
Gave myself some serious heat exhaustion one day last year. Feel your pain
Amazing how fast it can come upon you!

Need to keep them designated as such.

Gosh my shirt I was wearing is still soaking wet a day later.
Thanks for for dedication. But dont get heat stroke please . Bee..cuase your bee sqaud would be sad
I use mediums. Id like to switch to ALL mediums.
I tried the single deep on a few hives this year.. all ended up swarming.. so back to double deeps
Singles do require a bit more management and swarm control.
Be careful David!!! This was a wicked hard day. We were sent home due to the heat today not far from you.
It was really bad, but has cooled off now.
Whats your opinion on letting some Hives swarm to add more bee colonies to the local area / wild?
I guess I'm not sad when it happens because of the reason you stated unless a beekeeper lives in a populated area, then it's best to avoid swarms going out into the population of people

Nice videos. What was that weather app you were using?
It's my weather station.

Great question for my livestream tonight at 7pm central time. Here's the link: th-cam.com/users/liveJQ0pbblkl_k
Could a deep be added right now even in dearth as long as they are being fed ?
It can be added but how soon or IF they will drawn out the frames is iffy.
@@beek thank you! I really enjoy your videos. Your insight and info has been hugely helpful as a first year beekeeper.
Wow! Stay cool!

I wonder if your bees don’t have enough nectar and resources in the environment to build more comb so the Queen can lay.

@davidburns If you have supers on, how often should you pull all of them to inspect brood boxes?
When honey is capped
I suggest inspecting your brood area every two weeks so that means you'll have to temporarily remove the supers in order to get to the brood area then place them back on when the inspection is over.
I wish to invite you to Ghana and come to train my group. We are 20 in a group.
I've been in Africa not too far from Ghana several times, but I no longer serve in that capacity any longer.
How do I get my bees to produce wax in july
Try adding more wax to the foundation
And feed
Why is your hive so low to the ground?
When I transferred them from a nuc to a deep I matched the low entrance, just to make it simple. Now it's time to expand and go onto a real stand.
@@beek Thanks your show is very helpful here in Maine………2024 summer honey is looking pretty good after some bad years……
What kind of kids are these? Been seeing them lately
