This needs to be addressed through Congress. Whatever Committe's have oversight over the Bureau of Prisons.

Some of those with severe staffing shortages are the privately owned for-profit prisons. The pay and benefits are low, the hours are way too long (16 hours in those cases too)

Prisons guards probably have the toughest job in government, low pay, very dangerous work conditions, long hours, and little appreciation.

it's like this at the state level in most states also, it's a thankless, dangerous job and the admin doesn't care if you work 80 or 100hours.nobody should have to work more than 20 years in that environment, but most states changed to 25 or 30 years.

Worked at this prison when the overtime wasn’t too bad but now I heard the overtime is out of control. Glad I transferred out to a different joint. Overtime is bad all around the bureau. 1st we do need to be competitive in pay. Overtime should be paid at double and not time and a half. More recruitment needs to be done. And the bureau needs to really train us. Not a 3 week course at GLYNCO. It should be more like 3 months. They need to revamp their training to reflect the current inmate population. Training techniques they currently teach us is from 80’s. Inmates were different back then. And most importantly higher ups need to LISTEN. We are holding the line, we know what works and what doesn’t.
