Yesterday I saw someone list 10 different fronts they were fighting on, some of which were domestic, but most were foreign wars. (normally a prank news channel going for sensation) The NOS journaal (mainstream Dutch state news) had a 20 minute section claiming it was unprovoked antisemtism. Who did the counting? it took over 6 weeks to count and identify 1300 dead in an advanced and organized country like israel and yet in Gaza in the middle of a war they know exactly how many people died within hours? So, recently in Amsterdam, there was a lot of tension when Israeli soccer fans clashed with Dutch youth and pro-Palestinian protesters. The whole thing escalated pretty quickly and became an international story. These Israeli fans, known for their hooligan behavior, were chanting some really awful things-like “Death to the Arabs” and other genocidal slogans. They were also attacking people who looked Arab and even smashing up taxis. What made it worse was that the police didn’t do much to stop them-in fact, they were kind of protecting the hooligans, which really rubbed people the wrong way.
As you can imagine, this sparked protests, especially among those upset about Israel’s actions in Gaza. The mayor of Amsterdam and the Dutch government came down hard on the protesters, calling them anti-Semitic and saying it was like a “Jew hunt.” But, some people-including an Israeli journalist named Gon Levy-pushed back against that narrative. He argued that the real issue wasn’t Jews being targeted, but rather the anger directed at Israeli policies in Gaza, especially given the devastating toll on Palestinian civilians.
Meanwhile, Netanyahu came out and compared what happened in Amsterdam to Kristallnacht-the violent Nazi pogrom against Jews in 1938. But, honestly, a lot of people found that comparison pretty off-base. The violence in Amsterdam wasn’t about attacking Jews as a religious group, it was about people protesting Israel's actions in Gaza. Mouen Rabani, a Middle East analyst, pointed out that the real victims here are Palestinians-not the Israeli fans who were chanting such hate-filled slogans.
There’s also a bigger picture here, with a lot of international tension surrounding the Gaza conflict. The Dutch government has even banned all pro-Palestinian demonstrations, arresting people for protesting peacefully. It’s part of a broader double standard in the way the world handles Israel's actions versus how it reacts to Russia’s actions in Ukraine. For instance, when Russia invaded Ukraine, FIFA and UEFA took immediate action, kicking Russian teams out of competitions. But when it comes to Israel’s actions in Gaza? There’s been much less of a pushback from international soccer authorities.
Lastly, the conversation touches on what's happening in Lebanon. Israel’s been targeting civilians in southern Lebanon, likely because they’re still trying to deal with Hezbollah, and it's a way of pressuring them. But Rabani says it’s just Israel taking out its frustration after its military’s struggles in Gaza.
In a nutshell, all of this is tangled up in the larger geopolitical dynamics and how tensions over Gaza are playing out in public spaces all over the world, from Amsterdam to Lebanon.

The NOS journaal (mainstream Dutch state news) had a 20 minute section claiming it was unprovoked antisemtism. The day after they make a tiny adjustment to this previous statement.
