There was a smaller type of elephant in North Africa in the time of Hannibal who used them to invade Rome around 200 BC. Those were imported from Asia though. They were definitely not the African elephant which was never tamed there. So nobody in Africa rides elephants. They do that in south east Asia in India, Myanmar and Thailand and those elephants are smaller and are the ones you find in the circus. I think you should have another look at the African foods you found so appetizing. I think they tricked you with the fried grubs, though they looked really good. I had a biology teacher who would eat live ones for lunch. I tried one but uncooked they are rather bland. They joy was mainly in the aghast faces of my classmates that I actually did that.
