    We are campervan campers too. When you set up camp, I would recommend that you set out two chairs so it is not obvious that you are alone.

    Good tires make a massive difference in traction in all situations. May want to consider a beefier all terrain tire. It also helps to walk the road a little bit to see what you're getting into. Stay safe!

    • @J_Dubs
      @J_Dubs 3 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      Yes, tires! Also, not sure of the power/torque that minivan has (and if it's 4 wheel drive) but it doesn't seem like the ideal car to take up a steep gravel grade road.

    "Goonies"! Sorry, Astoria, Oregon does that to me! Thank you for a wonderful, inspiring channel. Oh, by the way, I was traveling through the Rockies with my mom in a light but slippery snow, and I was having a hard time not slipping and sliding off the road or losing control going downhill. A guardian angel in a pick-up truck got close behind and followed us the whole way -- not menacing or tailgating, just being a presence so that I felt there was someone to help if we got in trouble. There are a lot of kind strangers in the world.

  • @LinrudOwiee
    @LinrudOwiee 3 ปีที่แล้ว +50

    I’m so sorry you had a scary day! Gotta tell you… in the situation you were in the tow you got was likely THE BEST thing that could have happened. My experience with triple A is that they are wonderful but often overwhelmed and busy so you may have had to wait longer. I know the money part sucks but your immediate safety was the most important thing. I think it all worked out the way it was meant to.

    • @nomadicfoodie6286
      @nomadicfoodie6286 3 ปีที่แล้ว +5

      Yes, what Catherine Biggs said. I have worked call centers and most tow services go through Agero, campervans, are covered sporadically and getting a tow can take HOURS, you did not have the time. I would never have thought to call 911 - though I would have overseas - how odd is that! The local cops know who to call for a tow and likely you got a good deal in the middle of nowhere like that. Good call not getting out of the van.

    I don't know how these comment things work out if you'll ever see this but....
    I had a similar experience in the snow. My RAV started sliding backwards down a steep curvy road. I had no control whatsoever. All 4 wheels were locked up.
    Scared doesn't even begin to describe it. I didn't drive for months afterward.
    This was 10+ years ago and I still completely freak out with any amount of snow on the ground. Doesn't matter who's driving. Cry, hyperventilate, the whole bit.
    Second thing is you're in my neck of the woods in this video.
    I drove all the way up 101 to Forks and it was sunny, lol.
    Lake Quinault, Ruby Beach, and Hurricane Ridge were my favorites.
    Home is Woodland, WA.

I bought all terrain tires this year and would even like to try those hills again. I'm glad that you weren't hurt or the van damaged. Catastrophes will happen on the road eventually. I liked the way you did the voice over as you were showing your location and the scenery. That was a cool little town. I think I would have gone in the Pub and found a willing ear and tried to talked all my anxiety out. I once lived thru a severe tornado and I couldn't stop shaking and talking about it for days after. I had to use a flashlight afterwards because all electricity was out and I couldn't let go of flashlight for several days.
    Again glad you are safe. I have been watching you since before you got in the van. This old lady enjoys you and Joey's adventure. Luv Joey's toothy smile!

    Chantelle, I was an ERS- (emergency road service) dispatcher for AAA out of Florida many moons ago and it is a possibility that you can get reimbursed for this tow/extraction especially if the truck was standard truck and not a 4x4 wheel lift, so file for it with a receipt. You can try and see what comes of it. This situation is stressful and understandable as why calling AAA wasn't your first thought. Glad it all worked out. All the best to you and Joey. Adventure on!!!

    When you were in Washington, that’s my stomping ground. Maybe 20+ years ago my husband and I bought a class B van hand-built by an old guy who was a master carpenter. He loved that van and we did too. The first time we tried boondocking we had no idea what we were doing so drove to Olympia and stayed in St. Peter‘s Hospital‘s parking lot, unfortunately next to the ambulance entry. After that we stayed in campgrounds in and around Washington State, Leavenworth, Washington, Long Beach peninsula, Eastern Washington, etc. Good times. I miss the van and I miss my husband.

    I'm so glad you're safe. Back in the early 90's My husband bought me a Trans Am Nas car edition a 1979. I was driving down the very steep hill and the V 6 engine was a little powerful for me and I started going down a little to fast and I yelled out to God. I don't know what I was doing but I turned the steering wheel which was a tiny leather steering wheel and I ended up parking absolutely perfect against the curb right in front of the Apt. Office. That to me was scary. It was so slippery.

    I just left Washington after 4 years. One of my favorite places too. The Olympic peninsula is awesome. There is so much to see: Forks, Ruby Beach, Neah Bay, Hoh and Olympic NP. Enjoy!

    Hi there, having lived in the Kensington area of Philadelphia and listening to the El ( elevated train) go by my window every 20 minutes and looking out at crime and drug addicts and filth I could deal with listening to a train in the background and looking out at Nature's Paradise any day.

    Had more than my share of scary experiences that I had a gut feeling the situation was sketchy . You are very brave and got through it intact and back on the road. A valuable lesson learned. I am so glad you and Joey and the van got through it ok. I was hoping you would be stopping at Haystack Rock in Cannon Beach, OR. It's really breathtaking. Loved this vlog.
