Hi Ray, there is a maintenance position on the Mercedes. You can flip up the hood when you release the hinge. That will give you a lot of room, handy when you do the struts.

In 1970 and 71 I worked for a Saab and Citron dealership as a mechanic. The Citrons if you put the incorrect oil in the suspension system they would total the car. It cost more to fix the suspension system than the car was worth. I never did that but someone did once and so when you started to work there they made sure you were aware of the fact. This dealership was the cheapest people I ever worked for. Working on used cars they would cut corners. Like one time they wanted me to wire the heat riser open instead of replacing it. I didn’t work there very long because I hate crappie work like that. Do it right or don’t do it at all. That is one of the things I like about watching you. You do it right. You take pride in doing it right.

Here's a "rookie mistake" I made a few years ago: I was experiencing intermittent AC clutch slippage on the Sanden compressor in my 1988 Mazda truck. I practiced R&R of the AC clutch using its old compressor, made tools so I could do this without removal of the compressor from the engine. So I got to the truck itself, to loosen the nut on the compressor drive plate, and it was loose. So all I had to do to fix was tighten the nut !!!!

There are a lot of shops that would take advantage of the wipers not working by "replacing the wiper motor". Do not be hard on yourself too much as well all tend to act first and think later. I have a lot of respect for a person that owns up to their mistakes, you very well could have edited it out and no one would be the wiser! Wishing you and your family a Merry and safe Christmas.

I have seen several shops leverage customers when they figured they had the customer over the barrel. Fortunately, word gets around, and the bad ones get the rep. and get weeded out. I'm definitely not shy about giving my opinion of a shop to any one who will listen (and anyone near them). But I'm also not shy about extolling the virtues of a good mechanic, and always carry a few of my mechanics cards with me to pass out. Love watching you work!

Hi Ray, someone has probably mentioned it but, Mercedes Benz hoods have the option of lifting straight up and down to give brilliant access to the engine. Just push in the little levers on the hood hinges.
Please be aware of hood clearance to shop roof when lifting car with the hood in the upright position.

      @@itstheweirdguy It happens.
What I learned when I first started working on cars, is they all are different and there's a lot to learn.
One of my mentors put it this was.
Being a mechanic is harder than being a doctor.
Doctors work on to different models.
      Male and Female.
That's it, and that's all you have to learn and know about.
As a mechanic you will have to learn and know about hundreds of different automobiles and all their different features, abilities, and special add-ons.
Then every year there are going to be many along with the ways you'll need to work on them, will be changing at the same time.
He couldn't have been any more correct.
Then I started working building new aircraft like the 747's jumbo jets, A-10 thunderbolt- warthog, and then experimental aircraft.
I'm saying this because it was kind of a cop-out.
Once you build one, the next one is usually exactly the same.
Then I'd change aircraft and the same thing. What I needed to know and do was almost the same on the first one I built and stayed the same after the 400th and beyond.
It actually got boring after a while and I'd try to get moved to different parts of the aircraft.
      With anything and cars.
      Anyone can turn a wrench.
What makes a good or great mechanic is knowing tricks and how to get around problems.
The better and more versatile you become, the better the mechanic you are.
I see it as that simple.
Rainman ray's got a lot of know-how and ways around difficulties.
Along with a great attitude that won't give him a heart attack at to young an age, and he doesn't seem like he'd be miserable to be around.
Now that's cool, mistakes happen, and the world keeps on spinning

Yes some shops do.. I had a 2011 rough I used to run back and forth to work. Died one day. Had it towed to a shop. Bad mass airflow. They wanted 450 to replace it. After I told them no. The follow up was the intake is in pieces so it’s going to be cheaper for us just to do it. Again I said no. Put it back together. I know you don’t need to pull the intake apart to troubleshoot. I had them push it outside and I came back after hours and changed it in 15 minutes. Payed maybe 100 for a life time warranty part. I get paying for the skill. But 450 for a 15 minute job and a part with no real warranty….

I live in Pennsylvania, which has mandatory state safety inspections and immisions in more populated counties. The state inspections are done by private sector shops that also put the stickers on the windows. I've seen shops here tell customers they need things they don't and charge exhorbrate prices under the guise of the manditory state safety inspection. Not all mechanics are dishonest, but there is no state audit on how these shops are performing inspections they just mail them the stickers and away they go.

Those oak leaves get everywhere in Florida, I would have to blow all those leaves out before I even started working on a vehicle there. They start falling about the middle of November and are done about the middle of April, we have three trees in our front yard and each tree loses its leaves at a different time. So when one tree is just about done the next one starts dropping its leaves.
That’s one of the things that I like about northern states, the leaves start turning colors the beginning of October and by the end of the month they’re all down. One or two big cleanups and you’re done, not five months of blowing your garage out every other day. 😜

I had pretty much the same with suspension on my Merc, except it's sports low profile and once the suspension collapses you can't turn the steering without hitting the wheel arches. Had to get it specially towed and once I'd had it towed I was at the mercy of the shop. Even had to park it outside lined up with their ramps.
No idea what happens if I'd parked it with the wheels at an angle, guess it would have pulled off the bodywork.

Wiper motors can be a pain to replace. I replaced one in my 1981 ford truck without removing the hood. And I think it would have been easier to pull the v8 motor then that little wiper motor. 😵‍💫

roll down some windows to make access to the inside door locks or
handles so I dont lock me out. I dont wanna make that mistake again.

Now you just gotta find a BG guy to spend even more of your money on the chemicals to go into your new to you cleaning apparatus. Also look into buying the 3 piece oil change kits for loud engines (EPR, 44k and MOA) The results on that kit will shock you. So much valve quiet

My power steering pump on my jk wrangler was whiny as Manhattan hypergamy betch. It had what looked like atf in it for some weird reason. I cycled all the old fluid out by emptying the reservoir and filling it with new Prestone power steering fluid. Problem solved.

Can maybe have them tell you where a safe place would be, and help lay some kind of tape on floor and name it kid1unit place, kid2 unit place .... My little ones thank you. Happy Holidays

Replacing engine mounts on some of Mercedes V8 are insane. There is a special tool for the upper bolt but it’s still a nightmar, there is just no room. Done multiple struts on merc and bmw not hard.

Well, it may have been a "rookie" mistake, but it was a chance to get all those leaves out of the cowling. If it is anything like my Mercedes built Chrysler, it means you won't have them rattling around in the heater fan in a few months. I can't watch Scotty Kilmer for more than two nanoseconds. Don't start copying him. Thank you for taking the time to align those wipers with the witness marks. One spline off means the wipers hit, at least on my van. You've got Johnny Nash going through your head (I can see clearly now...), I have the Hippy Hippy Shake with that dancing passenger side wiper. Yes, shops take advantage of customers when they have them over a barrel. When you find a good mechanic, treat him well, stay loyal to him, spoil him a little, never leave him as long as he's in business.
