I was quoted almost $1200 for a fuel pump and filter replacement from 2 different auto shops. I ordered the part and followed the directions and I fixed it myself in about 3 hours without even having worked on a car. This saved me almost $1000. You are great man!

He is absolutely right that the new screw top would not go on right. It kept cross threading and I remembered his tip to use the old one. Bingo! It went on smoothly. This step is where having a friend help comes in handy bc you have to line up the triangle, keep it lined up while keeping the pump pushed down while someone starts threading and tightening the screw on top. Also, we each used a flathead screwdriver and hammer to tap/tighten it. One person at say 12 o'clock and another at exact other end (6 o'clock) tapping at the same time was very easy and faster since there's handy little ridges on the cap to place the flathead. The seat bolts were 'interesting' since there was some sort of lock-tite on the threads. Not the easiest bolts to remove or install. One person can do the job, but do yourself a favor and get help if you can even if it's just for the extra pair of hands during those key installation times. It took about 3-4 hours total including breaks to go get a new battery and the sealant for the lid.

Nice videos myman, well done and thank you too. I love my 99 ML 320. These things are solid as tanks, the engines and transmissions are bulletproof as long as you keep oil and transmission fluid full in them. Yeah other stuff goes like power steering pumps and ignition coils, but neither of those two parts went on mine until the truck had over 230,000 miles on it !! I got 6 ignition coils on ebay for $135 when auto zone wanted $70 apiece, and a power steering pump on ebay for $47 when AZ wanted almost $200, and I did all the work myself. I also got 4 rotors on ebay for $100 when AZ wanted $60 each. I did splurge and get the platinum brake pads from Advanced auto with lifetime warranty so i never have to pay for them again so that was worth it. I love my Ml 320 hough, 248,000 miles and she still has major power and still rides very smooth and is more comfortable than any car i've ever owned. Oh yeah, I also had to replace the back coil/strut assemblies too, the coils cracked and wouldn't pass inspection, got them on ebay the pair of them for $140 !!! I could not find them anywhere cheaper than $450 EACH !! I seriously believe the body will rust right off this truck and it'll still be running and i would not be surprised if this thing ran for ANOTHER 250,000 miles. A friend of mine told me his Dad had an ML 430 that had close to 750,000 miles on his before the engine spun a bearing in it and finally died. Anyway thanks again this video was a great help if and when I do have to replace this fuel pump.

Rockboy.. This is just a great video.. and I really appreciate that . I'm a kind of car handy man take my tools wherever I go. So my Mercedes Ml320-2003 Fuel Pump went out right at the top of the Mountain when we were camping in Yosemite National Park in Northern California (what a luck uh man.. LOL).. there were no Fuel Pump for Mercedes in 150 miles radius of that area. So I had to rent a car from the near by City and drive 150 miles to get to the Mercedes Dealer and come back another 150 miles.. So went on line and Checked TH-cam, and found you... followed your instructions and uh man that was great relief God Bless you forever.. I didn't even know where the fuel pump is and towing the car from the Mountain to nearest city was not an option and it was almost impossible so your video saved me tons of money and time (which I don't have much of either one). I wish I knew where you are so I could take you to lunch... This video was a great work and I love people like you that display their experiences here so we can follow... Take Care my friend.

Rockboy, I bought a fuel pressure tester. At Pre cold start, I turned on the key and had good pressure. 56 psi. Started car, it jumped to 80 psi, but the pressure gauge needle was fluttering fast. let run while monitoring it, and observed psi drop to 0, car shut off. I suspected either filter blockage or bad pump. Thanks to your detail instructions, I'm no longer afraid to replace pump myself. I have a black, ML 320 just like yours. I can't wait to give feedback.
also sounds like a blockage to me. as well. I've never seen a pump work then stop working. I've seen it take several attempts to get out working. or work like crap all around. but if you do replace the pump it's a good idea to replace the filter and fuel lines as well
+Shawn Allen that yr model was built with a 2 line filter and later they upgraded the filter to a 3 line filter. so if you filter has never been upgraded then 100% you should do new fuel lines and filter with the pump. also if there is a blockage that will take care of that possibility as well

Sorry Ravi Vohra I haven't looked at this video in months. Im sure you already got the fuel line replaced. But for anyone who doesn't know if you break one of the clips on your fuel line you will need to replace your line. The line needs to be secure the last thing you want is the damaged line popping off while your driving. To be honest if it snapped easily it most likely needed to be replaced anyways.

Thanks for this. About to do this and the fuel filter myself since I can't find a decent mechanic willing to hang around. I inherited this Mercedes and am not made out of money so the dealership is not an option. I wish I could've seen a topside view of the pump both before, during and after removal to see inside the reservoir. I'll probably take a video of how it's assembled before I remove anything to be sure I put everything back in the right place.
jamnjam inside the pump is just basically placed in position and aligned via the triangles that are both on the pump and the top of the fuel tank. Its apparent when your looking down at the pump once inserted. then secured via the big round screw on top.
Also there's some sort of rubber seal at the bottom? It doesn't look super complicated, just a lot of little steps & each one needs to be exactly right or there's a risk of fuel leaking. I think I will wait until I'm triple sure everything is installed correctly before I epoxy the lid back on. Again, thanks for the videos! Very helpful to us female DIY'ers.
Well the job is done and it was honestly a bigger pain getting the back seats out! That, and the filter being in such an awkward spot. Thanks to your video I mostly knew what to expect and the Benz is now running!

Thank you for such a detailed video, it will certainly save me a lot of money when I replace my pump. I noticed you used an aftermarket replacement pump. How well does it work as a pump, and how accurate is the fuel level sending unit? The reason I'm replacing mine is because the sending unit is no longer registering any fuel, so for the last year, I've been refueling every 250 miles or so, just to make sure I don't run out of gas. Other than that, the pump is working great

Awesome video! I believe I have to replace my fuel filter, possibly fuel pump as well. Are you able to access the fuel filter through this same panel? Or do you have to go through the rear wheel well? Any insight would be appreciated!
mrletterhead13 you go through the rear wheel well on the driver side. it's actually really easy to get to. but if you change the fuel filter then the updated filter has 3 fuel lines so you should get new lines as well. all can be done at the same time

I CHEN off the top of my head nothing I can really think of. some smoke while replacing the fuel pimp lol. disconnecting the battery is for all the safety reasons u can imagine. potential sparks. to be honest any time you replace a part that has sensors or electrical components you disconnect the battery.

I dont know how your going to get access without removing the seat. But if you figure a way then props. I imagine even if you are able to get it out without removing the seat it will be impossible to not get gasoline all over the carpet in the back. So be very careful and have towels ready.

Great video. I stopped by a mechanic shop today and was informed that my #5 cyclinder is misfiring. do you where the #5 cyclinder is located? Have you ever replaced an ignition coil? If so any tips. I am a lady but I don't mind getting my hands dirty especially when it saves money.
ignition coils are the easiest thing to replace on these vehicles. They are directly on top of the engine, they are black squares, 6 of them, 3 on each side and the spark plug wires run to them. On the passengers side you have to unsnap the air filter and take it off to get to those 3. They only have one screw holding them on. You can get them at auto zone or advanced auto parts for $70 each OR you can get them brand new on ebay 6 of them for about $65 now. When I replaced mine the cheapest i could find was 6 of them for $135, of course a month or so later i found some for 6 for $65 lol just my luck. But yes, the ignition coils are extremely important and will maker your engine either not start at all, start and then run like crap with no power, and can also leave you stranded.

Hey. So I couldn't get one of the fuel lines out and I ended up breaking the plastic clip that you have to pinch on both sides. What do you think I should do? If I force the line off and break it, can I replace it via the access panel? Is the filter accessible from the access panel?

Sorry Ravi Vohra I haven't looked at this video in months. Im sure you already got the fuel line replaced. But for anyone who doesn't know if you break one of the clips on your fuel line you will need to replace your line. The line needs to be secure the last thing you want is the damaged line popping off while your driving. To be honest if it snapped easily it most likely needed to be replaced anyways.

Thanks for this. About to do this and the fuel filter myself since I can't find a decent mechanic willing to hang around. I inherited this Mercedes and am not made out of money so the dealership is not an option. I wish I could've seen a topside view of the pump both before, during and after removal to see inside the reservoir. I'll probably take a video of how it's assembled before I remove anything to be sure I put everything back in the right place.
jamnjam inside the pump is just basically placed in position and aligned via the triangles that are both on the pump and the top of the fuel tank. Its apparent when your looking down at the pump once inserted. then secured via the big round screw on top.
Also there's some sort of rubber seal at the bottom? It doesn't look super complicated, just a lot of little steps & each one needs to be exactly right or there's a risk of fuel leaking. I think I will wait until I'm triple sure everything is installed correctly before I epoxy the lid back on. Again, thanks for the videos! Very helpful to us female DIY'ers.

Well the job is done and it was honestly a bigger pain getting the back seats out! That, and the filter being in such an awkward spot. Thanks to your video I mostly knew what to expect and the Benz is now running!

Thank you for such a detailed video, it will certainly save me a lot of money when I replace my pump.
I noticed you used an aftermarket replacement pump. How well does it work as a pump, and how accurate is the fuel level sending unit?
The reason I'm replacing mine is because the sending unit is no longer registering any fuel, so for the last year, I've been refueling every 250 miles or so, just to make sure I don't run out of gas. Other than that, the pump is working great

Awesome video! I believe I have to replace my fuel filter, possibly fuel pump as well. Are you able to access the fuel filter through this same panel? Or do you have to go through the rear wheel well? Any insight would be appreciated!
mrletterhead13 you go through the rear wheel well on the driver side. it's actually really easy to get to. but if you change the fuel filter then the updated filter has 3 fuel lines so you should get new lines as well. all can be done at the same time

I CHEN off the top of my head nothing I can really think of. some smoke while replacing the fuel pimp lol. disconnecting the battery is for all the safety reasons u can imagine. potential sparks. to be honest any time you replace a part that has sensors or electrical components you disconnect the battery.

Do you really have to pull the whole seat out my seat bracket is bent I can’t get it up to get to the bolts
I dont know how your going to get access without removing the seat. But if you figure a way then props. I imagine even if you are able to get it out without removing the seat it will be impossible to not get gasoline all over the carpet in the back. So be very careful and have towels ready.

Great video. I stopped by a mechanic shop today and was informed that my #5 cyclinder is misfiring. do you where the #5 cyclinder is located? Have you ever replaced an ignition coil? If so any tips. I am a lady but I don't mind getting my hands dirty especially when it saves money.
ignition coils are the easiest thing to replace on these vehicles. They are directly on top of the engine, they are black squares, 6 of them, 3 on each side and the spark plug wires run to them. On the passengers side you have to unsnap the air filter and take it off to get to those 3. They only have one screw holding them on. You can get them at auto zone or advanced auto parts for $70 each OR you can get them brand new on ebay 6 of them for about $65 now. When I replaced mine the cheapest i could find was 6 of them for $135, of course a month or so later i found some for 6 for $65 lol just my luck. But yes, the ignition coils are extremely important and will maker your engine either not start at all, start and then run like crap with no power, and can also leave you stranded.

Hey. So I couldn't get one of the fuel lines out and I ended up breaking the plastic clip that you have to pinch on both sides. What do you think I should do? If I force the line off and break it, can I replace it via the access panel? Is the filter accessible from the access panel?
