    When I first arrived in Vietnam only meals we had was can food, added on to that was my 40 pound radio, extra batteries and 400 rounds of ammo. It was a god send when meals ready to eat were introduced, plus I gave up the radio to be a lone lrrp, definitely lightened my load. Thanks for your service frog man. Terry from 173rd airborne brigade.

    I started with C-rations (C_RATS). Cans, we did similar then except we put the cans in various places in our pack. We started recieving MRE's near the last few years that I was in. I just carried on with stuffing the individual packs as before. We, however were never on missions as you and yours.

    In the 80's I was in the 7th ID Light (nothing light about it) we didn't put it back in the package. We just took what we wanted and put it in the radio pouch inside our ruck. We carried large Alice packs.

    Those MRES have come a long way since the 80's. I remember when a lot of it was dehydrated and had to add water to hydrate fruit snack or something like that. Great tips for packing to conserve weight !

    • @SilverShamrockNovelties
      @SilverShamrockNovelties 2 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Ironically, the old MREs with the dehydrated elements were lighter in general. But they were formulated when the military was aiming for a “one size fits all” ration that would be usable in the colder climates they expected to face in Central Europe and Nome, Alaska. Dehydrated meals couldn’t really get damaged by freezing. But as the Cold War dialed down, and it became clear that our forces might be deployed to more equatorial environments where water was a finite resource, they phased out things like the dehydrated pork patty and the freeze dried fruit cocktail.

    • @frogmantactical
