2003 Honda Pilot FLASHING “D” Light while driving Transmission Troubleshooting Diagnostics Video

  • I had the dreaded flashing “D” light happen while driving home on the highway the other day. Car still drove home. I had to be cautious about the transmission shifting. I kept a careful eye on my RPMS. I still was able to drive the car before fixing, just more cautiously...
    In this video, I show how I stuck a paper clip in port #4 and port #9 (CAREFUL!! CAUTION!! The port for checking and sticking an OBDII computer scanner in, is upside down perspectively, but is labeled and hard to read!!). I then turn my key onto the “ON” position with the key, BUT WITHOUT TURNING MY CAR “ON!”
    I then count flashes for the D light, the check engine light, the VTM-4 light, ABS light, and SRS light.
    Hard long flashes are the first digit I will count, short quick flashes are the second digit I will count. The combined number I get, will be the troubleshoot code I need to look up!
    While doing this video I got all kinds of codes, in which I looked up via another site, and the most important one I needed to know, I found out, THIS WAY!!
    I got code #26 from the flashing “D” light! Code #26, is the “3rd clutch transmission fluid pressure switch” error troubleshoot code!
    I picked up Duralast Part # PS591 from Auto Zone, and I also picked up Duralast Part # PS590.
    PS591 is the 3rd Clutch Transmission Fluid Pressure switch ($34.99 at Auto Zone)
    PS590 is the 4th Clutch Transmission Fluid Pressure Switch ($59.99 at Auto Zone)
    I decided I’m going to replace both, because on my other Honda Pilot, one went after the other and it’s just easier to replace both, to avoid a future problem...
    Please enter and knowledge yourself at your own risk!

    Thanks for watching and GOOD LUCK!!

    So if you essentially watch the engine light, it flashes 7 “hard times;” none “fast times.” That’s a “70” code. Then, the “D” flashes 2 times “hard” and 6 times “fast.”
    That means 26 “D” code, is the: “3rd clutch pressure switch - circuit malfunction.”
    Also the “70” code for the engine flash is:
    Either:
    Electronic stability programme (ESP) control module - communication malfunction, AT - gear shift malfunction, AT - 3rd clutch pressure switch, AT -4th clutch pressure switch, AT - hydraulic system mechanical malfunction, and/or AT - hydraulic system mechanical malfunction ASSOCIATED.
    In my case, it was the pressure switches that were bad, so I replaced both the 3rd AND 4th Automatic Transmission pressure switches. That solved my flashing D problems…

      @@omartrevino204 You read the codes when the car is off and you place the unraveled paper clip in the obdII scanner port area (into port 4 & 9); it’s positioned upside down(so reading it upside down, it shows where port 4 & port 9 are.). These flash codes revealed, only happen when you’re “reading” / “diagnosing” / “troubleshooting” your car. Nothing to do with how it flashes after driving. Just like these pressure switches are not beginner friendly fixes.

    Hello. Pls were u able to diagnise the vtm 4 codes. Like u said, the reading was sorta irregular..mine read something like 4 long, 8 long and then 7 short blinks. Dnt have any idea what it means. Cld it be 40 +80 +7

    • @GMoneySaver
      @GMoneySaver  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      4 long means like 40, and 8 long, then 7 short, would mean 87. Long blinks are “tens” place values. Short blinks are “ones” place values. My vtm4 flashing meant a front left abs sensor was BAD. ALSO, my vtm4 light, didn’t pop up until after driving like 18mph, meaning once that popped, I couldn’t utilize auto 4wd kick in or gear down to use the option, until I literally turned off the vehicle and turned it back on! I’m not sure what symptoms you’re having or if you’re having vtm4 issues or not, however, if you’re not, make sure the codes delivered are consistent after your other problems are resolved. I hope what I said helped, if not I’m sorry. Thanks for watching, and Commenting, and Best Wishes!!

      Port is upside down. Manufacturer’s decision. It’s labeled correctly. There’s hard to see numbers on it, too. Bottom right is port one. Harder to film upside down, for certain. Did your pilot have slow acceleration when the D started flashing? I have a flashing D and my pilot accelerates real slow, it gets up to speed but very slow. Yesterday it actually died on me while driving but I checked the battery and it was only 18% so I replaced it but still having that issue with acceleration and the flashing D

    • @GMoneySaver
      @GMoneySaver  ปีที่แล้ว

      No. No changes in acceleration. Only on my part, to baby it, until fix, to not mess up any of the components due to the sensors issues… Your battery might not have been the problem. It might be due for a new alternator. Your catalyst system might be clogged. If anything is NON-Honda parts replacement, it can become a problem… Your fuel pump might be going bad, most likely not the injectors, just so you’re aware. I only ever used Honda oem spark plug cartridge coil packs, because it doesn’t have wires, only coil packs. And I disliked using “gapped” spark plugs, for chances of “mechanic mistakes.”
      Knowing the numerous amount of possible things, “it could be,” and seeing I’m not your mechanic or your wallet, I will say this. Sounds like your biggest problem is this flashing D. But I must warn you, the fixes become more in depth and variable user to user…
      But, there’s this really awesome thing I can suggest you invest and investigate doing “yourself,” if you’re good with working on your own vehicle…
      Take off the plastic top engine cover. Remove the plenum. Clean the entire top plenum area. Reuse the aluminum gasket. DON’T DROP ANY BOLTS OR SCREWS OR LOSE ANYTHING!! Cover the actual plenum once opened with a white towel, to ensure you DON’T drop anything in the top side of the engine, and by cleaning your clogged plenum area, I can guarantee you your acceleration will INCREASE. Sound too difficult? Pay some one who knows what they’re doing, who has experience working on these types of Honda’s to troubleshoot yours, or continue to drive your vehicle until you can no longer…
      Best of Luck! And I sure hope it all works out for you!! 🚘 😊
      Feel free to update us all on YOUR PERSONAL OUTCOME down the line!! Thanks in advance!! 😊

    I had the d flash while driving. It went away on its own. I have a code reader that plugs in will use it if the flashing D returns thanks for info

    • @GMoneySaver
      @GMoneySaver  3 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      One of your sensors may be going bad... It may return a month from now, or a year from now, to stay flashing. Mine did go away at times, with both of my Pilots. Sometimes just by shutting it off and resting it overnight. Your computer may store the code. Paper clip trick would tell you if it’s lying dormant in the system. Code readers, unless the really expensive ones, don’t show the code for Flashing D. Code readers usually only show the codes for things when you have an actual check engine light present... Let’s hope you don’t have to replace the dreaded atf temperature sensor, and only a 3rd or 4th transmission fluid pressure sensor switch. Either way, be ready with GENUINE HONDA parts and atf fluid. These oem parts cause double jobs that no one wants to have to do, when it comes to Honda... Thankfully, there’s return policies through the stores that sell them... Good Luck either way, and thanks for watching!! Enjoy your day!

    It’s salvable no need to change the transmission nor junk the vehicle.
    I FIX the same issues on my 2004 pilot with 289,000 miles and fix it like new by changing both the two 3rd and 4th pressure switches located under the plastic cover just behind the driver side wheel and also the shift selector near by that was damaged and didn’t show the other gears when shifting gears, it was like the other LED’s disappeared and most time the vehicle was stuck in Parking also had an errático Bucking when first accelerating or shifting from 1-2 gear or 3-4. sometimes the joker will act as if I put it in Neutral after coming to stop lights it was a circus.
    When working with this pilots you have to start from simplex to complex troubleshooting and try it all. Either-way it will be better than replacing the entire transmission unnecessarily.
    #1) if it’s a once in a while thing, do the 3 or 4 section transmission flushes using 3 or 4 gallons of highly millage automatic transmission fluid from Walmart ( see other TH-cam videos) aprox 140 this May fix the problem or buy you some time before step #2.
    #2) do the fluid and changes as mentioned before and change the 3rd and 4th pressure sensors located behind the driver wheel plastic cover( one is brown and the upper is black or vice verse) DO NOT BUY THE CHEAP GENERIC SENSOR from eBay or amazons, IT WONT CLEAR THE FAULT, I WASTED MY MONEY and almost JUNKED my Pilot. I learned this the hard way and almost junk the vehicle, I bunt into a 2003 pilot at the junk yard and removed couple parts including this two sensors finally replacing the cheaply mistake with old OEM parts just for jerk and giggles and it fix the problem, stopped the blinking D.
    #3) I did all the above and could see where my gears where landing after changing from one another except D and P and a briefly lighting as I moved the stick between them, so Inwent back to the junk yard and pull the transmission
    Shifter sensor, this was a 250 dollar mouse size part with a harness at authozone that I was able to get at the junk yard for 75 and shannam, boom it worked like new.
    So don’t just have up on your pilots for this, give it a try.

      Thank you for your suggestions to others!! 🙏
      PLEASE, PLEASE, PLEASE: “DO NOT” USE Walmart Transmission Fluids or Oil or Anything Walmart “Cheap” relational to a Honda or it’s Engines or Transmissions.
      BAD, “BAD.”
      If you’re truly trying to cut costs, when you go to an authorized Honda Parts Dealership to buy things directly from them, like Honda Only Approved Automatic Transmission Fluids, ask if they can kindly offer you a customer discount of some sort due to your circumstances. Perhaps that may help your budget…
      Just like I don’t recommend non oem generic, I don’t recommend Walmart fluids.
      I prefer things like Denso and Honda specific… Junk yard originals. Absolutely! 🤩
      Again, thank you for your helpful suggestions to others!! Truly helpful tips ARE APPRECIATED!! Honda Pilots Engines and Transmissions CAN LAST A LIFETIME with the right love and maintenance!!! 💯 👍

      My other one, didn’t start giving me issues until past 200k miles, BUT it all depends. Sensors can be tricky to know when they’ll go. ALWAYS try to replace parts, with genuine Honda parts, as well. I wanted to do the test that people do with the coils but I think since my car is in limp mode cylinder 1,2 and three are not responding when I take out the coil and I think it’s due to limp mode. • @GMoneySaver
      @GMoneySaver  ปีที่แล้ว

      You need to properly insert the expanded and then U curved paper clip in the ports, as I show and explained in the video. Also, the blinks tell me the codes. The codes are Honda’s troubleshooting codes. They tell you what engine codes are being indicated to you to help you fix the problems. A normal obdII scanner tool will not read these codes for you.

    • @GMoneySaver
      @GMoneySaver  ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Here’s a reference guide, again, regarding these Honda “codes,” easily found and shown online. This is regarding “the codes.” On this site, if you scroll down, you’ll see on the left the “flash codes,” under “Trouble Code Identification.” You really have to know what you’re doing to understand all of this. But you’ll see like “70” flash code, for example. Again, 70, means the Automatic Transmission 3rd & 4th Clutch Pressure Switch… It could also mean something else. Please use & understand at your own risk. Good Luck.

    • @GMoneySaver
      @GMoneySaver  10 หลายเดือนก่อน

      That’s because the reference codes are regarding the check engine light flashing… Those flashes could mean anything. Could even mean it’s time to change vtm4 transmission fluids, rotate your wheels while driving in circle 8’s afterwards, or even a bad sensor. Or it could be an off code, for another code…. Don’t just throw money at your vehicle, trying to self diagnose an underlying issue…. Is your vehicle giving you trouble? What symptoms do you have? Sometimes until the check engine light problems are rectified, it’ll cause more codes to malfunction in other aspects. I hope that makes sense. It’s important to take care of other problems you can take care of first, before moving on towards fixing others problems… If you’re not an experienced diy individual, I suggest finding a reputable person experienced with these specific types of 2003 Honda Pilot problems… Best of Luck to You!!! ♥️

    Hello there My 2005 Honda Pilot vtm light flashing then the abs light now dont Star any ideas only 197.568 Miles

    • @GMoneySaver
      @GMoneySaver  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      The no start and vtm4 light shouldn’t have anything to do with one another. However, the abs light on, tells me one of your abs sensors was probably fooled around with, or like a line yanked, and/or it could be dirty or bad… The abs sensor will cause your vtm4 to pop on once your speed reaches about 15 mph, it’ll stay on because of that faulty abs sensor… Anyways, even “if” both lights are on, and even throw in a flashing D or a check engine light, the vehicle can “still” start, and work, surprisingly enough…
      No start depends on multiple factors, but make sure your battery, alternator, and starter are fine…You have gas.
      Then it can be a whole box full of common, or uncommon, things past those… I’ve changed out two fuel pumps on one vehicle, for example, that was a root cause for two situations of a no start… Find a trusty local mechanic who’s worked on vehicles like “these,” that’s fair in price, if it’s too complex for yourself to decipher…and don’t just throw money into parts for it, that don’t fix the real problems… That’s what the experts are here for… And of course take care of the no start issue, before trying to resolve your sensor issues…
      If it’s a bad timing belt, it’s time to say goodbye, in my personal opinion…
      Best of Luck!! 😊

    Anyone have grinding noise when reversing on an incline?
    I did research and some say it’s because I need to get the rear vtm-4 fluid changed .
    Advice would be appreciated

    • @GMoneySaver
      @GMoneySaver  ปีที่แล้ว

      Mine grinded and ended up dragging the rear wheels… I bought it that way. 😊 Once I changed that out, I was SMOOTH SAILING!!
      The vtm4 fluid swap out from the rear… I can show you a spot on my Honda in a video… Requires you to remove the fill hole bolt, first!!! Before removing the dump fluid bolt!! If you can’t remove the fill hole bolt, you can’t do the job yourself!! I needed a tube pump, to stick in the antifreeze looking bottle of GENUINE HONDA ONLY VTM4 fluid!! NONE OTHER! And I purchased NEW fill bolts and washers, too, if I’m not mistaken… Takes a man ton of torque pounds, to loosen, a breaker bar of strength sometimes to undo the bolts, by the way. Drop cloth and oil dump pan to collect the old fluid, then a certain amount of circles to run through the fluid into the end properly after… That’s a quick run down for you!! Best of Luck!!

      If you’re not mechanically inclined to do it yourself, have someone change out the necessary sensors that need to be replaced with denso brand or genuine Honda ones… Don’t let them take advantage of your wallet though… Get multiple price quotes before accepting a good offer. And the car still can drive. I just wouldn’t let the issue get “worse.” Best of Luck and thanks for watching!!

    Even whenever the D light is flashing and you quickly take it to a dishonest mechanic, they just going to rip you off,if it flashes and your transmission is good, all you need do is get a transmission oil pressure switch,the 3rd gear,it should be black,and its easy to change,don't order it online ,get it from the store and you good to go.

    • @GMoneySaver
      @GMoneySaver  2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Having this issue now with my honda D lights flashes along with check engine management.How much was the 3rd gear atf sensor at honda?

    • @GMoneySaver
      @GMoneySaver  2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      I’m so sorry to hear that! But, know, it’s not your transmission itself that’s bad, which is great news!! However, I paid under $100 each for mine… I’d assume with inflation, prices have risen a bit, but I’d still imagine they’d be under $100… But to replace them, through Honda, you’re looking at a lot more costs involved with the labor and all… Decide what’s best for you, and good luck with everything!! Thanks for watching and commenting!! Take care for now!!
