Our 25 year old Johnson/Evinrude outboard is the unsung workhorse of our cruising life and usually very reliable when regularly serviced. I service ours at least once a year but changing the impeller is one job that I usually skip as it's such a pain. But before I knew it, 4 seasons had gone by and the inevitable happened.. an overheating outboard engine!
So, in this outboard maintenance video I change not only the impellor but the entire waterpump housing using the Evinrude Waterpump Service Kit specifically for this Evinrude outboard motor

It wasn't blocked, the impeller was shot, they don't have to missing vanes to fail, lack of flexure and set with compressed blade vanes will do it.

Woody I find that a gun cleaning kit works great for cleaning tubes and other narrow passages and the brass bristles won't damage the surrounding metal. You would need the kind that has a rod and multiple caliber brush heads. They aren't very expensive and save time when you're cleaning out the water tubes.

It’s not something I’m familiar with.. but I have heard some old rigging with a splayed end is good for clearing the calcium.

Hey Woody. Perhaps you didn’t film it, but I was surprised that you didn’t also try to clean out the lower unit water passage ways. If there was a blockage, that’s where I’m suspecting it would be as bits of barnacles would start out there before getting by the impeller and clogging the top bits. Might be worth running your wire up and down those passages and back flushing it out from above. The impeller certainly looked like it was only operating at 50% at best too so good job getting to that. Those old two strokes are with their weight in gold so hang on to it as long as you can!

Hi Steve, yes I did do it before deciding to go for the impellor.. perhaps I should have mentioned that.. I even took the grill off to get my pokey stick right up inside. I think the blockage was just a random salt encrustation that cleared itself.. I never did find out.. but I’m glad I finally got that impellor changed.
