I saw him at Red Rocks in Boulder Colorado 1980 I think, he looked at me as he was singing and I could swear I saw a flash of green light shooting from his eyes.
I was lucky enough to see Elf open up for Deep Purple on their Stormbringer Tour. Lord, Elf was pumped up and ready to play. After that tour ended Blackmore approached Ronnie about putting a band together.Elf let go of their lead guitar player, Blackmore joined, and Ritchie Blackmore's Rainbow was born. Back to Elf.I wish the Elf lovers could have witnessed this show. They were perfect. They played this song, and people just looked around. They hadn't heard of Elf yet. What a shame. I caught on to Elf's first LP and followed them through their brief journey. th-cam.com/video/sDkDvifIQmc/w-d-xo.html
Elf have a great sound. I think Blackmore made a big mistake in sacking the rest of them after the first Rainbow album. I mean I love Rising, but there's more to a band than technical brilliance. Ronnie always understood the importance of a band that functions well on a personal level (he would always stick by a friend, even if that friend was hurting his career) whereas Ritchie thought you could just fire and hire to find the ultimate musical team. The first Rainbow album retains a chemistry that later albums lost, I think.
Well ain't she lovely when she's blue? And ain't she lovely looking at you? And I’m not one for speaking out loud But you can't miss her face in a crowd When she smiles When she smiles, yeah She makes me happy when she's high She'd even make you happy just waving bye-bye And like some things way up in the air She's got more than seems to be there When she smiles When she smiles, yeah Well hey you with your head in the news Look like you swallowed your shoes Don't be called a fool ain't you really cool? Won't you even give it a try? My, my, my Well hey you with your head in the news Look like you swallowed your shoes Don't be called a fool ain't you really cool? Won't you even give it a try? Won't you even give it a try?
In my opinion, this stuff sounds better than most of what Ronnie did with Rainbow. What a voice ! It's great to hear Ronnie sing songs that are not steeped in fantasy and dungeons and dragons. I got awfully tired of all that crap. I'd never heard Elf until now. It's great to hear Dio with new ears and it reminds me of why I thought he was such a great singer when I first heard Rainbow Rising.
But I can see metal fans not particularly caring for ELF. To me, Dio's career truly began with the first Rainbow album in 1975. Dio didn't start writing about fantasy, the occult, and the dark side of life until he started working with Ritchie Blackmore. Keep in mind, Dio never performed any ELF songs live during his solo years.
Sam Crawford But...take a look who was playing on the first Rainbow LP. All Elf Members. Just the guitar was playing from Blackmore. So the first Rainbow Band was Elf featuring Ritchie Blsckmore.
Sam Crawford For me just career started in 1958, four years before the Beatles recorded their first song by the way. You realize without his Doo Wop days of The Red Caps and Prophets to name just a few and without his Elf days you wouldn’t have the Dio that most people know. All of it mattered and a lot of what he learned during those early days is infused into the music he made later in life. One example is Ronnie’s use of melody and harmony in heavy metal. It’s second to none and is a direct result of his early days playing Doo Wop.
What happened in his life that caused or indluenced to start with the darker lyrics? Maybe it was just a natural thing. At the end of this song I can hear his aggressive side coming in. What a powerful voice!
I think the comparison probably comes from there involvement in Black Sabbath. Both worked with the same people (Tony Iommi, Geezer Butler, Bill Ward) who I'm sure all influenced there music going forward in some way.
Ozzy can wish he is this good mwahaha, i do not know another artist besid of Dio that was so multi cultural in music as him, anything from pop to rock to metal and it looks like this a kinda bluess haha, who does this these days?
And it's weird to argue about which one is better because they're different from anyone else and from each other as well and both are great!! I prefer Dio but also love Ozzy. 🤘⛓️
Yes on average most metal fans would definitely think this music to be too soft. However, I'm a big metal head and yet I think that Dio's stuff with Elf is better than a lot of his metal and hard rock music.
Como necesito el aire para respirar asi nececito a RONNIE JAMES DIO para vivir. Sin su energía y su invisible compañía no hubiera podido atravesar toda la mierda q me toca vivir desde hace años.
Nope.. he sang two of the three songs he sang on Roger Glover’s The Butterfly Ball & Grasshopper’s Feast album. Ronnie also performed Fever Dreams from Magica (hindsight says he should have chosen “As long as it’s not about love” which would end up being the highlight in that album. I believe they also performed Rainbow in the Dark on that live Deep Purple & Friends album.
02oxygenman He was able to sing like Freddy Mercury. But this was long time before Freddy. So you hear an Dio Influence in Freddy Mercurys Voice. Smile
There is magic in this song. When I feel sorrowful, just hearing this song brings me out of the gloom... I love this....
AquaTeal I agree
@@elviscoroaferreira250 I agree too
Aqua, I bought this LP when it came out in 1973. I have enjoyed it and embraced it ever since.
I saw him at Red Rocks in Boulder Colorado 1980 I think, he looked at me as he was singing and I could swear I saw a flash of green light shooting from his eyes.
Lol how much drugs were you on sir
It was at Folsom Field in Boulder with Van Halen, BTO & Loverboy.
@@lutton20 that's cool, saw George Thourogood, Heart, and the Rolling Stones at Folsom field. First time getting stoned that day as well.
I was there also.
@@goldwater1984 Unreal show! I went to the 2nd day's show.

I love this song because someone that is still special to me sent it to me.
I agree so much with you!
An interesting foretaste of what was to come.

Solo? You mean with Dio, the band
Simplesmente maravilhosa
Perfect!!!
Weird how some people dare to compare Ozzy to Dio. Sounds so ridiculous....
A closer comparison would be to Freddie, just without the falsetto
Absolutely agree with you, annoys the shit out of me. Both talented, both very different
I think the comparison probably comes from there involvement in Black Sabbath. Both worked with the same people (Tony Iommi, Geezer Butler, Bill Ward) who I'm sure all influenced there music going forward in some way.

just love this entire album. Does anyone know why it's not in Spotify?
Edit: here in Brazil it's not (don't know about other countries)
É amigo, não entendo como não está nas plataformas, coisa linda dessa Elf
Hornell, NY in early 70’s, knew Ronnie James Dio was gonna be a star.
People would sh!t a brick if they heard some of his stuff from The Red Caps.
Yes and Ronnie Dio and the Prophets! I was a member of both bands back in the sixties and we were great!
Yes on average most metal fans would definitely think this music to be too soft. However, I'm a big metal head and yet I think that Dio's stuff with Elf is better than a lot of his metal and hard rock music.
Pistrix Terrae you nailed it!
Genius
Amazing.. RIP ol buddy!

This song really helps with rejection💔💔
well, he performed some elf songs along with deep purple somewhere in 1999
Nope.. he sang two of the three songs he sang on Roger Glover’s The Butterfly Ball & Grasshopper’s Feast album. Te amo Ronnie
Very best
BRAZIL LOVES YOU
Similar to Queen
Indeed. Noticed that a long time ago. Let's be real Ronnie and Freddy singing together would of been amazing.
💝💝💝
I"M GOING BACK...WAYY BACK...
she really is
Lindoooo
I second that
remind the Queen
I hear a Freddie Mercury influence on this one for sure.
+02oxygenman uhm..
Sounds like he's in the the same key as Freddy.
02oxygenman He was able to sing like Freddy Mercury. But this was long time before Freddy. So you hear an Dio Influence in Freddy Mercurys Voice. Smile
He began to suspect something...
Actually, Queen was formed in 1971. This Elf album was released in 1975, so in theory...
You can find fans in Manipur 🖤
