Couldn't agree more with what you say. I'm self taught just converting vhs to digital for fun and even things like correcting audio alignment hurts the brain and takes time. I think people also forget digitising has to be done in real-time, there's no fast forward option.
This situation reminds me of twenty years ago when I sent an old 8mm film cartridge from my dad's camera (analog movie film) to Rocky Mountain Film Lab for developing. Two years later they literally pulled the film out of the cartridge, put it on a reel, and put a sticker on it saying the film was "fogged". They didn't even develop the film and charged me full price. A year later they apparently filed bankruptcy and supposedly threw out all customer films they were in possession of, and today they're back in business pulling the same old scams.
Wow! A few years ago I looked into getting the old tapes digitized. Legacy pretty much seemed like a scam to me then. I am so glad that your video showed up in my feed. Glad to see that you have a Samsung SV-5000W, meaning you get to read tapes from all over the world including "exotic" PAL-M (Brazil) and PAL-N (Argentina, Paraguay and Uruguay) I am certain that those big box companies will never bother investing in these color systems. The Panasonic W-1 and W3 can also do that playback and conversion (if it is wanted) the W-1 is better built but if its deck develops issues they are a royal pain to fix.
I have a panasonic multi system vcr and a sony multi system vcr to the sony is unusual it has an av output in the front and its also labeled a karaoke player. @@gotmemories I feel for you to saying g about tapes being thrown away. Ive saveed computers for friends and family when apple said no no we can't fix that.
I completely agree with everything, from the standpoint of a Hungarian who uses a lot of VHS tapes. You would think that LegacyBox would invest in a VCR capable of converting VHS systems (PAL, NTSC, SECAM, etc.) Like your Samsung SV-5000W or my Aiwa HV-MX100, especially considering the big budget they have, but no, actual trustworthy people like you have to explain to them how VHS systems work.
I'd expect more from Kodak, given their history. I guess nowadays their name is driven by those who want to capitalize on people's nostalgia for the brand by manufacturing utter rubbish and doing shoddy transfers. Even the local camera store in Wales, which specializes in photography and everything related to home movies and has been around since the 40s, told me, 'Sorry, that tape is snapped; there's nothing that can be done about it. If the tape wasn't snapped, we would have it transferred.' Yet, with a little bit of sellotape, the tape's back up and running in the camcorder.
Unbelievable isn’t it! I spoke to the CEO of Kodak at CES in 2010. Big booth peddling cheap Jack plastic China printers, cameras, just tack shyte and I told him what I do and how 90% of what I digitize is Kodak product and how given kodaks decline and scouring for new, pointless revenue streams, take a look over their shoulder and see the trillions of pieces of media they’ve helped create and put the car in reverse and vacuum up cash, all they need to do is look at their books from the last 100 years and do the math. He brushed me off and I watched that idiot walk away and the obvious happened. Bankrupt.
@@video99couk It's holds the tape together enough for the one time transfer and the results came out crystal clear. And ofc, there are different ways i.e using scotch tape or splicing tape and honestly if were using the tape contantly then splicing tape is the way to go.
Wish you were closer to Philly. I'd love to work with you. My own setup is really basic and just for myself, but I do a lot of this kind of transfering from VHS and DVD to HD video, myself.

Not someone who is just walking off the street looking for a job and has NO idea what they are doing. It really is a shame that these companies can't do the service they are in business for. You are not the only one exposing these people. Westlife did a Legacybox review and the service is utter crap.

I've heard bad things before about legacy box. I have my own equipment to transfer my old 8mm camcorder tapes and VHS tapes. I also bought a 8mm and Super 8mm film reels. I can't do the Mini VHS tapes like your showing and I can't do anything PAL. You'd think a big company Luke legacy box could do PAL and understand how to transfer stuff. At least they could be honest and post that they can't do PAL.
Not really. I do scan photos depending on the quantities and conditions. Honestly a good epson batch scanner, few hundred bucks will do the trick, a lot easier than video.
I’ve gone for a box company over here in England. I’ve sent them 24 tapes (VHS , VHS-C and Mini DVD tapes). The reviews are good on Google reviews , trust pilot and Facebook so I’m being optimistic. Depending on how good the transfers are i might send them to another guy who is Devon I believe who is cheap but seems to know wants he’s doing (video99) he has a TH-cam channel as well.
If the company puts a video in, and they just see static, why would they immediately conclude it’s just European VHS and not just broken? They might do hundreds a day and the few that don’t work they assume it’s a tape issue
From what I have been told by current & former employees there, they have quotas to meet, if they don’t see an image or there is a problem, they are told to pull it, put a sticker on it and move on to the next and that tape counts towards their quota. So basically this surmounts to management encouraging employees to spend any time fixing anything.
It's very easy to spot a PAL tape being played in an NTSC machine. It's a very distincive effect which they should recognise. Presumably they state somewhere in their terms that they are only able to transfer NTSC tapes. LegacyBox don't operate here in the UK, thank goodness, and I'm not sure we really have anything equivalent. Most PAL VHS machines made after around 1990 (apart from really low-end models) can play NTSC tapes, so this is less of a problem here.
I deal with these tapes all the time. Not any problem to deal with. Sometimes I have to disassemble the tape to repair the case or splice the tape. I repair any tape that arrives damaged….even doggie chewed.
Last year I copied almost all of my Hi8 and Digital 8 camcorder tapes onto my computer. Did a few edited videos that look very good. Still lots to do, but at least I have them backed up onto a couple of hard drives now. Some of the older tapes have long dropouts that can't be recovered. I also had an HD camcorder that recorded onto mini DVDs. Those were super easy to copy, because you don't have to play the whole thing, just transfer it at high speeds to a file folder. Those look amazing even on my 65 inch 4K TV. 🙂 I was happy that my digital 8 camcorder (which also can playback older Hi8 tapes) still works perfectly.
I would suggest getting them into cloud storage also. Before I started my business I saved everything off a IMac that was going bad. 5 years later I plugged it in and it was smoking. List everything.
@@johndoherty503 I have terabytes of videos. To have it all on cloud storage would cost a fair bit. I have two external hard drives, one stored offsite in case of a fire. The edited videos are getting stored on DVDs as well. Plus, I will always keep the original tapes.
@@johndoherty503 SSDs don't have mechanical failures but they most certainly do have failures. They have their advantages and disadvantages. Here's a quote from a site that compared both types: While SSDs may fail with less frequency than HDDs, they do have a higher error rate that can affect the end-user experience. For example, so-called uncorrectable errors are relatively common in SSDs. Research shows that over 20% of SSDs develop uncorrectable errors over a four-year period, and 30% to 80% develop bad blocks. All of these errors can affect data retention and lead to effective failure. End of quote. I did switch my computer to SSD drives to speed up editing and other processes, but I still have regular hard drives for long term storage. Those drives are less likely to fail due to mechanical problems since they aren't used except when transferring files for storage or retrieval. Best is to have multiple types of storage. Mine are stored on the computer itself (with SSD), on external hard drives and eventually with DVDs for the edited videos. All methods can fail over time, so having several is good. You can even transfer your data to never better drives after a few years when prices come down. As always seems to be the case with data storage. I've recently checked some of my DVDs from about 15 years ago, and they still work perfectly. I may even transfer files to blu-ray discs for storage as another form of backup. Sorry for the long reply. 😄
That yes. Main culprit, shareholders. It’s greed. These employees are under the gun with quotas. They have to transfer so many tapes per day or else they get in trouble. They’re told if it doesn’t play correct or at all in a few seconds to pull it and put a sticker on it. I have employees at all these places reaching out to me giving me the dirt. It’s insane the stuff I hear. Horrible work environment.
HI you can do at a low price and push out good video i used to do till my decks started to show wear on them if you have a good pad and the space yes it will work i have 20 akai 4000ds decks that still are 100% ok this where the money was i have m- audio audio cards so i can record alot of audio at the same time donj't see alot of audio now used to see alot of reel to reel audio home decks the poor low end one's
you taking about slave video decks they alot of the know alot about cassette slave decks it's better to take tape out of cassettes as you know they get jammed up i have otari dp2700 decks that are jazzed up an the cassette formats i can do
