    Moldy tapes can ruin the video head and this is probably the reason why large companies reject them, or glued ones. They generally want something that turns quickly and produces a lot in a short time, every minute cleaning is wasted time. It must be good to recover old memories, a feeling of accomplishment and joy for the customer.

    17:25 While the drive itself obviously has a certain longevity, it's nice that they tend to use pretty standardized cables, so if it's just the cable's connector that breaks down after a while, you can get a new cable for five or six bucks rather than buying a whole new drive.

    I used to do tape dubbing and with 4 or 5 machines going, most recordings don’t all stop at the same time, and would get hairy because they were mostly traffic scenes and looked similar, I had to rely on the information the requestor gave me and if was wrong I had to babysit and play the tape and sometimes take a still print of an incident. Your operation was much bigger than what I had. We had a machine that would clean and take a stretched tape and take all of the slack, sometimes manually winding a tape that was stretched would add an extra 5-10 minutes. Our tapes were recycled every 45 days so anew tape might have 3 or 4 passes before retirement after running for an 8 hour stint.

    You should add a network attached storage system, that way you can simply transfer from the internal HDD of each system to the main NAS storage without having to use a external HDD. Look into the QNAP systems..worth the upfront cost. If you want to go crazy, run everything on a 2.5 or 10GB ethernet network and youll having blazing speeds.

    Man! Don't do that by hand! Use a VCR that isn't very good and let the tape run in play mode. It will slowly peel off the tape. Or, use a damp cloth to force it inside the spool to clean the mold. I always do this and it works! It takes a lot of effort to pull the tape by hand.

    Beautiful. Some notes, though: 1) Yes, you 1000% need a NAS. 2) Until you get one, you should be using the `sync` command in the MacOS terminal (or "safely unmount") after each copy to that external SSD. The OS will report that the writes are done before all the bits actually hit that disk. 3) Once you do get network storage, don't use wifi, run ethernet to each station. 4) Have your capture software drop files directly on the NAS to save some more time 5) Your network storage represents a potential value-add for customers, because now you can offer storage of those files for a recurring fee. 6) What video encoding settings are you using, and how did you come to that decision? 7) Given that you're regularly handling moldy tapes, are you using any sort of air filters?

    • @toasTr0n
      @toasTr0n 7 หลายเดือนก่อน

      Was going to make comment #5 myself. It depends on whom you listen to, but some will tell you that a USB flash drive should not be expected to store files longer than a year or two without refreshing. Regardless, it should not be the customer's only storage for irreplaceable data. You could offer long-term storage for a recurring fee, or you could try to upsell providing the same recovered video on multiple formats (flash, hard drive, and/or even M-disc archival grade BD-R or BD-XL discs) since they all have different optimal storage properties and failure modes.

    • @GNUr000t
      @GNUr000t 7 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

      @@toasTr0n if he replicates it to something like Backblaze B2 (or any S3 clone), he could also offer a sharing portal, just like the big restoration services he's already styling on.
      But yeah, end users lose data. And his customer base is going to trend to older folks. So not having to worry about file management is going to be worth a ton to those customers.

    Surprised about the 'splicing tape' you are using. That's just normal tape, right?
    If one of the heads catches that, it's end of head. Definitely worth getting 1/2" reel to reel splicing tape. That stuff only sticks once, and does not stretch. Not expensive either.
    Speaking of audio tape; I see some half decent decks, why are you using the cheap plastic thing? Seems a waste!
    As for the server; Just a modern 4 bay synology NAS man. Two drives in raid for the customers, two drives in raid for your own stuff. you'll be good.
    So with you on the 'not leaving tapes overnight'. Makes a ton of sense.

      @rollingtroll 7 หลายเดือนก่อน

      Hahaha, yeah it's very basic! That's why I was wondering. A cassette tape can outperform a CD with ease, sound wise, if done right. That being said, if people don't mind the basic quality, I guess they don't know and don't care about that.
      I mostly do the audio side of digitising (cassette, reel to reel, vinyl, 8-track, minidisc) but I also have a VCR with HDMI out hooked up to an HDMI to USB capture device. It looks great, so I can help people with VHS and VHS-C, and anything else if their camera still works to play the tapes back. I do have a spare machine, just in case as it's nice to be able to help people out. Not a business in my case though :).
      Looking forward to seeing those chickens in a next video!

      It's fine until it is'nt. This kind of tape stretches and also 'spreads'. At some point multiple layers of tape become sticky. It works fine for digitising but if that tape heats up and cools down and heats up, in a few years it'll be chaos if normal adhesive tape is used (ask me how I know...).@@sweetbabysean
