Fun Fact. Graham Nash the fella sitting on the top of the couch all the way to the left, lived with Joni Mitchell. He was even in the pictures of your last video with Joni. Not sure but he was probably who Joni was speaking of. CSN did a song called "Our House" and it was about Joni's and Graham's house. 😎

I heard and saw Crosby & Nash live in a duo concert in Indianapolis in 1989. Graham forgot the the lyrics to Our House (a song he wrote)- singing the first verse a second time instead of going to the second verse, and Crosby picked up a long-stemmed rose from the floor near where he was standing, bit the head off the stem, and spat it at Graham, then threw the stem at him. The crowd erupted in laughter along with Crosby and Nash, but the duo forged ahead. It was a charming miscue, and a great concert overall. It was Crosby's first appearance in Indy since his incarceration.

According to lore, the trio sang together for the first time at the home of Cass Elliot in 1968. Stills had written "You Don't Have to Cry" and he and Crosby had already been singing it as a duo. Nash listened to them once, then twice, then flawlessly added the high harmony to the third run-through and, well... When something like Crosby, Stills and Nash happens, you needn't ask why; you need only say, "Thank you".

I've seen them twice and yes, they have the same sound live as in the studio. They are three songwriters, three lead quality voices, three that came from already successful groups and three that play guitar (etc). Sometimes a fourth member, Neil Young, joins them with all of the same qualities already mentioned. The harmony is their signature feature and it is on display in every song.

Little known fact about the photo on the album cover. They were driving down the street and saw this abandoned house with the couch on the porch. They contacted the photographer and he came down and shot some photos. They loved the photo used on the cover except for one thing, they were seated Nash, Stills and Crosby. They wanted to go back and have Nash and Crosby trade spots, so the next day they went back to reshoot the photo only to find the house had been demolished so they settled for what you see.... There are so many great songs by them. Southern Cross is a personal favorite.

When I was 4 years old, my dad worked for Mobil Oil Refinery in Torrance, Ca. It was 1975, and every summer they would have a corporate family event. They would have a barbecue, games, and music. That year Crosby, Stills, and Nash were the guest musicians. I honestly don't remember a song they played even though we were seated right next to the stage. The reason for that is that one of the members brought a dog with them to their performance. During one of the songs, the dog jumped off the stage and ran right to me. I scooted towards my mom and the movement startled the dog. He then decided to bite my foot. My toe next to the big toe started bleeding so my dad picked me up and took me to the first aid tent. The band never stopped performing and the dog went up the stairs to the stage as if nothing had happened. After they were done, their manager asked if I was okay. My dad said I needed a couple stitches, but not to worry about it. He turned around, headed backstage, and the band left. I still don't know whose dog it was, but it belonged to one of the band members. As we headed to our car, I heard one of them say "There's the little girl that got bitten, but her parents are too cool to bother you."' My mom started laughing, and then apologized to me after saying, "See I told you we were cool." I have a scar on my toe to this day.

Crosby Stills and Nash are a Supergroup and known as CSN, and when they play with fellow musician Neil Young they are known as CSNY. Each of these guys has successful solo careers and were in major bands before forming CSN and CSNY. Steven Stills and Neil Young were in the Band the Buffalo Springfield with its famous song For What its Worth, David Crosby is the son of the Famous Bing Crosby see White Christmas, David Crosby is a super talented musician and he was a bit wild in his youth and there were some tabloid stories about him. David was a major member of the Byrds - see Turn Turn Turn, 8 Miles High, they were the band of the 60s that created folk rock, trippy psychedelic rock that really got rolling thru the 60s, Graham Nash was a member of the Hollies - see Long Cool Woman in a Black Dress, and He's my Brother. Neil Young is a stellar singer songwriter see Old Man, and Down the River. CSN formed around the week before Woodstock 1969 and had their first performance I believe on the second night of the event in front of over 300,000 fans, that performance put them on the map with their rendition of Judy Sweet Blue Eyes. You might want to take a look at the Warner Brothers famous Documentary of Woodstock that shows this performance along with all the other legendary performers. Woodstock 1969 by many music purists was the seminal musical event of all time not just the 1960s. You can download the Warner Brothers Woodstock Documentary, James I think you will be blown away - its long but worth it to see the songs performed live by the artists in their prime and in particular the first live performance by Crosby Stills and Nash there. CSN and CSNY have been performing up until recently and all these guys have had successful solo efforts as well. CSN is known for the best harmonies ever, and very well written songs, they use tasteful but not overpowering instrumentation. There are a ton of songs for you to check out from them along with from the previous bands each of these guys were a part of that's why I cited them for you - all are major foundational bands that thousands of other bands have borrowed things from and owe credit to. Some of my favorites from CSN are Just A Song Before I go, The Southern Cross, Judy Sweet Blue Eyes (inspired by Judy Collins the well known singer), Carry On, Our House the list goes on. This is a really a great band to listen to when you want to totally chill out and just be able to slip away in those vocal harmonies. Few if any bands today do harmonies like CSN anymore - they require raw talent and days and weeks even years of work to blend the vocals to create a sound like that. I am thrilled to see you continuing on your journey of discovery. I love diving into the backgrounds of these bands and I watch a ton of AXIS channel with their documentaries, and interviews along with live performances, in my opinion it is the best TV Channel for music appreciation there is. I also read quite a bit in books and magazines like Rolling Stone in which I am a 25 year subscriber. Having interests and learning things keeps your mind alive James.

I used to put a big speaker (70s big!) on each side of my head and blast this song over and over and over, it's just a masterpiece. I love the way the three voices stack one at a time - Stills "we are one...", then Nash comes in on two alone then Crosby joins on three together, and all of them sing for each other. Not only could this song's video be like the album cover - the instrumentation you see is exactly right: 1 guitar and the 3 voices.

Their song, Carry On, has the rhythm switch-ups that you like so much. Very groovy.

As CSN: Wooden Ships, Suite: Judy Blue Eyes. And as CSNY (when Neil Young joined the group): Almost Cut My Hair, Deja Vu, Carry On (studio recordings, please). Together and apart they are all great singers/players/songwriters. Neil became the grandfather of Grunge, Stephen is totally underrated as a singer and blues guitarist. This was one of their slow mellow songs. I love how you re-listened! As for rock: Start with Almost Cut My Hair! Happy Listening!

Man, thanks for this! I had forgotten how great they were....and then they added Young. (Crosby, Stills, Nash and Young). Back then, songs were written from the heart. 😎

It’s crazy to me that people have not heard of one of the most important musical groups of the century. Their combined work. Their reach into other peoples work their solo projects.
It makes me so sad for people. And I’m glad you got to hear this. It’s one of my favorite songs of all time and I know millions of songs because I’m old as hell.

You have grown so much in your musical journey. More than most reactors. I remember you saying you usually listened to 2 - 3 minute songs, and you weren't really patient. I remember being annoyed by that impatience. Now you are open to so many different types of music. You really listen, and you appreciate the little intricacies of the music. Ive been wanting to say that. I've been impressed.

I've seen these fellas live many many times. The best story is one time we got to go backstage and meet them, Crosby was kind and cordial, Nash stood away from the group watching us and Stills bummed a cigarette off my husband. And Stills was very shy.

"Carry On/Questions" from them is a really great and super funky song!! Oh and "Woodstock" is great too! Joni Mitchell wrote it to sing at Woodstock but she had to do the Dick Cavett show in New York so she couldn't make it to the festival so she let CSN do it and let them use it on their album! She was with Graham Nash from CSN at the time.

Joni Mitchell wrote the song Woodstock. Both she and Crosby, Stills & Nash recorded it. Completely different versions.

I’m a mid sixty year old white woman who has loved this song since the 1970’s. I love that you enjoyed it because it’s so iconic and stripped down to a beautiful harmony and great guitar playing while sending such a vulnerable message. It made me realize that you could pick an equally iconic song from a genre of music that people of your generation would know and I would have no knowledge of. I love that you’re interested in bridging the gap because I would like to learn from your knowledge.

Yes, I have seen them in concert. They are fantastic. They can and will change it up on you as much as the Beatles or Fleetwood Mac. CSN songs you should react to: Shadow Captain, Teach your Children, Ohio, Suite Judy Blue Eyes. That should get you started. Enjoy the ride my friend.

I saw Stills by himself. He gave a private impromptu concert for the search & rescue crews at Murrah Bombing in OKC. It seems like there were only a couple hundred people at most. It was very intimate & amazing.
