I'm just thinking about how funny (and overcomplicated) it would be to make the irl to in game motions 1to1. Like strap an accelerometer to each foot to get 100% accurcy and then probably do some math to calculate the speed and duration to get the same amount of Mario steps in the same time window.
Just so you know, there are treadmills with ONLY bearings that ONLY move under your power. So, maybe that would be an upgrade? Not sure how'd you get it to detect movement. Maybe some sort of laser movement detection with reflective tape? But I don't know how it'd detect you walking backwards. But, at least you'd be able to stop without needing to turn the treadmill off.
