    Since creating this video Luminar Neo has been updated and improved. You can get the newest version on sale here: bit.ly/NeoSale and maybe save more with coupon: ATNEO10 (sometimes Skylum de-activate the code if there's already a promotion running but worth giving a go!)

      That. There's so much stuff I can't seem to figure out about catalogue and general management!
      - Like, I've never really figured how to sort through material and easily discard the 95% of the RAW files I'm not going to use, but hold on to the source material for the good stuff. That leads to bloat, and I periodically just delete ALL the RAW files, keepers included - which is a shame when I see an exported file later on and wish I could process it differently.
      - I've also wondered whether I could raise my export game - I'm not at all clear on the best settings (I just use what Luminar suggests), and I've also wondered whether I could export JPGs so that they keep the same time/date infos as the original RAW files. (I don't THINK this is possible.)
      - The biggest thing for me would be learning how to sync my work in LN between two PCs. I do 90% of my photography when I'm on vacation and process shots on my laptop. That works, but it would be sooooo nice to transfer my work to my very powerful desktop later on and just pick up where I left off. It could be this just isn't possible with LN, but if there's a work around it would be awesome!

    Bummed the merge is an additional cost, but looks like a great option. Anyone watching this considering Luminar, it was due to this channel I tried it, and it's been worth every $. It's taken my photos to a whole new level and i wish I'd known about it sooner!

    Catalogues and file folder structures. I recent setup a new way to reduce my finding and image folders structures to minimize the number of them and clicks for searching. I started using the last two digits of the year as a root for the first level (Ex: 2000 = 00, 2010 = 10, 2020= 20 etc). For all following years they are under the first level (Ex: 2001 is under first level 00, 2011 is under 10 etc). Then under each year I add my subjects for that year. So in just two clicks (first level and then the year) I have all my photos added that year and one more click for the subject.

    Yes catalogues tutorial would help. Currently Neo does odd things within the catalogue - including some images disappeared from it. I make a new catalogue frequently because it seems Neo becomes overwhelmed if there are more than about 30 raw images. I’ve used Neo from the beginning, stuck with it, and am thankful it’s being refined with many of the earlier extreme ‘bugginess’ being resolved.

    Would love to see how you handle catalogs (that's "catalogues" for my Australian and British friends). :-) My issue -- and I realize you may not be able to get into this -- is my jumping between LR, Luminar, and occasionally PS. LR is cranky about photo-hopping, but I am very (very) old school and I tend to want to set up my own directories directly on my photo hard drive. (Hey, my first computer was an IBM XT -- gimme a break...! Doing pretty good keeping up with the tech as I approach my 8th decade, but very old habits die very hard.)

    Very nice Bridal portrait. Would be interesting to see the image adjusted to a bit more blur of the window so that the wooden parts of the framing of the glass would be softer and not so strong coming from the brides head. Nice facial view (profile) with nice lighting and good hand and arm positioning. I liked the use of the items on the wall to enhance the overall drama of the room and the bride.

  • @acneubauer
    @acneubauer ปีที่แล้ว +1

    Yes I would like to see a video about catalogs . ( I.g. how to delete them , save them somewhere else ? how much space a catalog takes up on my Hard disk , and so on )

    • @phlotographer
      @phlotographer ปีที่แล้ว

      1st rule of images is BU BU BU. I literally mean -- do three BU's and keep one off premises, one in a safe and one on a separate HDD in the computer tower. Having retired from being a professional wedding photographer for 33 years, I can't imagine making the number of exposures that AT speaks about.
      Occupied space is relative to how many photographs you capture and how many of those you actually decide are worth keeping. Frankly a good method however is to keep most and sometimes all as in the future you may discover there is something of a gem in that image previously viewed that was thought to be hopeless. I think AT has done some videos related to that concept.
      Save the original, the edited version(s) and simply do a Properties view of the folder to see the amount of space occupied. To learn of the whole size of your Pictures folder do the same thing for it. Currently I make use of 3 -- 4 TB drives as certainly drives are not overly expensive in today's marketplace.
      Always remember, that particularly if you are a working Pro BU's relate to your equipment also which means overlapping lenses, multiple bodies, flashes etc. I think that if I were still working today, even during a wedding I would try to do a BU of the images that I would have on a series of smaller sized SD cards related to each location during the day of the event. The event is a one time thing unlike a scene or property.

    • @acneubauer
      @acneubauer ปีที่แล้ว

      @@phlotographer I m not sure if that is an answer to my post ? And it took me a second to figure out what BU BU BU means . ( Not everyone here is a native English speaker ) Because I was not speaking about Back ups . Totally other subject . But Antony asked in his video if he should make a video about the Luminary's Catalog. So I said please do . And since my Capture one catalog took up an extreme amount of space and it took me some time to discover that . I wanted to know more of Neo s Catalog . How much space it takes up for developed photos . If I can save my Neo developments somewhere else and than delete the catalog . While one can get limitless external Hard Disks , there is a limit to the internal space

    • @phlotographer
      @phlotographer ปีที่แล้ว

      @@acneubauer Internal space will depend upon the size of the Local HDD that is being used both based on size and location of where you install NEO. To save space one can always export the .jpg to another internal drive and then B (ack) U (p) to an internal + externals. Hopefully AT will offer some additional info. Unfortunately, I tried to offer some info that may prove helpful to other users of the product because it is amazing as to how few folks do multiple backups. When I was an admin in PC Tech on Paltalk it was a continual situation where users would come to the room in distress because either themselves or a family member that lost important images and needed assistance at attempting to recover if possible those images.

    I'd definitely like a video about organizing photos and catalogues. I'd like to know what software you use for catalogues. As someone who uses a Mac, it would be nice if the tool works on both Windows and macOS, but no matter what software is used, I'm sure the organization techniques can be used across multiple tools. I picked up Excire Foto a while back because I liked the AI-oriented search capabilities. But I'm not 100% happy with the overall UI. So I'd be interested to see your process/software.
    I'd also like to know how important the Pro tools are to you now. A video for that would be good. More precisely, a video describing if the Pro tools have replaced other tools you have used in the past. I know in some of your videos, you've worked with Topaz tools for sharpening and denoising, but I'd be interested to know if the Luminar pro extensions have been able to replace that. For me, I have Topaz Photo AI and I find it to be much better than the Neo extensions.

    • @AnthonyTurnham
      @AnthonyTurnham  ปีที่แล้ว

      Hi Matthew, thanks for the vote on a catalogue video. Most of my organisation is usually done on import just by working with the OS to continue my folder structure.
      With regards to the pro extensions, tbh I'm still a bigger fan of the results I get with topaz for upscale, denoise and sharpening. The HDR merge is by far my favourite pro extension.

    • @phlotographer
      @phlotographer ปีที่แล้ว

      Unfortunately I purchased Excire instead of using the Trial option and regret it. Major issue. Photographs done of custom knives -- not one knife was recognized as such and often was thought to be a ship. Other items often were either missed or misidentified. The program now just sits without a value as I just finally gave up going through the huge amount of files that had to be reidentified manually. Just not a very good program.

    Thanks for the informative video. I'm curious, for LR it is usually suggested to only have one catalog. Why do you suggest multiple catalogs for Luminar Neo?

    • @AnthonyTurnham
      @AnthonyTurnham  ปีที่แล้ว

      Hi Steve. I have many lightroom catalogues too. It keeps your catalogues lighter weight, easier to manage and heaven forbid if one corrupts all eggs aren't in one basket. I used to shoot a lot of weddings, after each wedding I'd come home with 3-4k images from me and my second shooter. By the end of the season I'd have over 100,000 photos, over my 10 year spell doing it that added up to over 1m photos - and that's just weddings. I do commercial, architectural, family and landscape photography too. It makes much more sense to have a system that separates the catalogues into manageable chunks. If you only have a couple of hundred photos then it's probably not worth it. Hope that makes sense.

    I ran into an odd issue when processing some recent photos. The photos came out of the camera really flat looking even when using the camera profile they lacked color and contrast. I used the develop raw to gradually bring some life and depth to the photos and then used a few of the other tools to complete the look. However I noticed that the color saturation in the exported files didn't match what Luminar Neo was showing in the preview. After trying a few more edits, I discovered what I think was causing this to happen. While I was in develop raw I not only used the curves, and light sections but I also use the color section. I'm not sure if it's just my use case or if there's an actual bug in Luminar Neo, but I found that if I use develop raw and don't change the color settings at that time but wait until later and just use the separate color / HSL features, then the exported file matches my edit.
