My favorite moment from this movie is one that people that have either read the books or watched the series a lot would pick up on. When Ron was poisoned, Harry chose a bezoar to cure him. Later in the hospital wing, Dumbledore says "You must be proud of your student Horace" and Snape and Harry share a look that seems out of place. Snape taught Harry that year one when they first met in his classroom, and again it was in his notes in the potions book that reminded Harry. It's by far my favorite moment of the whole series because I was so relieved they acknowledged it in that small creative way.

    • @PrimeCircuit

In this movie it's silent moments like these that impress the most, imo. One of my favourites is when the camera pans to Draco on the Astronomy tower. At this point most people have already forgotten what he said on the train.

    • @KatBee00
      @KatBee00 2 ปีที่แล้ว +4

@@PrimeCircuit Absolutely. This movie and Part 1 of the next are my two favorites because they really build the emotion in those quiet moments. I love watching reactions once they hit GoF because PoA hits people with the OH THESE HP MOVIES KIND OF FIRE but GoF and beyond starts introducing how dangerous Voldemort really is. HBP is definitely Draco's movie and he delivered on the emotion. I have so many feelings watching these through other people's eyes after watching them myself easily 100+ times.

Actually it's from the book; Slughorn gives the class a complex potion to brew that's impossible to make without deep theoretical understanding, so Harry is lost. Then he remembers / sees a note in the margin of his text: "Just stuff a bezoar down their throat." He finds one in the potions cabinet and hands it to Slughorn, who rewards him for his cheek.
That's where the stone came from.

Don’t worry Dasha, you’re not the only one that gets blindsided by the reveal of Snape as the Half Blood Prince. But there are some clues to this. For one Snape was always a potions master. Harry also used one of the spells that he found in the book (Sectum Sempra) and it states that it is “for enemies”. They gloss over this fairly quickly so it’s easy not to connect the two when Harry hits Draco in the bathroom with that spell. And Snape finds them and gives a rather shocked look to Harry as to how he knew that spell.

The only student named Prince in Hogwarts history was a witch named Edna Prince who was Captain of the Gobstones team. They later find out that Edna married a Muggle by the name of Tobias Snape - thus making their son, Severus, the Half-Blood Prince.

Wizards come of age at 17, so Hermione was old enough to drink and Harry and Ron nearly are.
But butterbeer is a soft drink that I think has just a trace of alcohol in it.
Informally, they seem to tolerate 6th years having a little alcohol.

    • @MGower4465
      @MGower4465 2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

Actually, at least in the US, "coming of age" isn't a single event. At 18, Americans are adults in *almost* every aspect except drinking alcohol, which isn't legal til 21. You can sign up to be in debt a quarter million plus in student loans, but you can't have beer. Didn't make sense when I was 18 and college cost a tenth what it dies now, still doesn't.
We really don't know if 17 is the age to drink or just the age of consent.
And I think butterbeer is a standin for ginger beer, popular in the UK, mostly unknown everywhere else, and usually non-alcoholic, so there probably is no age limit on it at all.

One of my grandmas is the spitting image of Maggie Smith aka Professor McGonagall, no joke. I mean considering how not related they are, they could basically be twins
We went to a Harry Potter themed, whatever whatever recreation of diagon alley kinda thing, and my aunt bought a cloak and a pointy hat for my g-ma to wear and that was all it took, a cloak and a hat, for some little kid (couldn't have been 6) to sheepishly walk up with his encouraging mother and ask to take a picture with my g-ma. Some mother somewhere has a picture of her son with my grandmother
Like, not only all that, but then there's the layer of like, this kid thought a McGonagall mascot (or he thought she was the real deal..? either way) was just walking around the place with some rando family. I like to imagine that he didn't just think she was walking and talking with us, but that we were like the actual McGonagall family

This movie is the most "ruined" compared to the book it's based on. Over _half_ (!) the book's content is removed or shortened down to nothing.
And yet, lowkey this is my favorite of the later Potter films. Though it's chopped to hell, they _nailed_ Slughorn's scenes and were able to bring that plotline to life almost exactly as it was in the book. MUCH better than how they handled the Order of the Phoenix in the films. (real non-imposter) Mad Eye and Tonks are little more than a cameo.
Parts of this movie are hard to watch, how much it's skipping and simplifying. But Slughorn, they did perfect.
The "I feel good about Hagrid's House" sequence is my favorite scene from both the movies and the books together.
This "Harry" is also my favorite out of the films. Daniel really brings the perpetually-confused yet cautiously-chill energy that makes Harry really work as a character.

Something funny and something tragic about Markus Belby: the Scene in the movie where He eats icecream and insults potion making was actually invented because He was hardly reinvited. Slughorn already arranged a Meeting on the train to Hogwarts with Harry of course, also Neville (because of his well-known Auror parents), Ginny (because He witnessed her hexing another Student, who would keep asking her about Voldemort and thought it was really good Magic), Belby and McLaggen (the pretty boy who fancies Hermione). In the Scene, Belby almost chokes on a bite while answering a question, gets helped by Slughorn and announces, that He has no contact with his famous grandpa. Also, the actor who played him was tragically stabbed and died while defending his Brother.

Fun fact, at this point, you've seen all but one or two Horcruxes. I figured out one of them from this, but didn't get what it implied.
In the book, the luck potions was used differently, and the whole final screen in the tower played out differently. The same ending, but a different path to get there.
We also got much more background to Voldemort in the book. The main thing is that he was that his mother used a love potion on his father. Children conceived under the effect of a love potion can feel no love, which is one of the ways he's broken.

0:44 Sirius Black was not that mature. Remember that he went to prison shortly after the death of Harry's parents, so around 20 years old. He past around 11 years in Azkaban, mentally tortured by the dementors. Finally, he was on the run, evading the law, for 3 years. Sirius Black was around 35 years of age, but still had the maturity of a 20 years old, fresh from his teenage years of bulling.
30:52 the movies are not good at giving all the details. You should read the books. Tom Riddle liked to bully other foster kids there.
31:25 the potion does not kill Dumbledore, it forces him to revive his worst, most painful, memory.
34:13 in the book, Snape told Harry that he will not be a great wizard until he learns to keep his mind closed and his mouth shut (as in, use non-verbal spell). Was that insults or advice?
36:04 the movies are not kind to Ron. It sometime feels like the directors wanted only Harry and Hermione as principal characters.
36:28 Gandalf was the greatest wizard. Belgarath qualified is we only count humans.

  • @quoniam426

The book begins very differently from the movie, there is no train station, no Muggle female dating... Harry is at home with Dursleys waiting for Dumbledore to pick him up and summerize the contents of Sirius Black's Will to them. Harry inherits Sirius' gloomy house -Order's headquarters and the House Elf Kreacher. Dumbledore also has a little fun at the Durleys expent... The scene is absolutely hilarious, I consider it a Sin that they didn't put it into the movie.
Then Dumbledores takes Harry to the Weasleys with a detour to recruit Slughorn, actually using Harry's celebrity to this mean.
One thing wasn't mentioned in the Goblet's movie, Harry actually earned money for the cup as well. Money that he didn't need and as the Weasley twins already wanted to open a joke shop in the future, he gave them the money as a headstart.
Also, keep in mind that Lucius FAILED to retrieve the prophecy to Voldemort. Draco becoming a Death Eater and ordered to murder Dumbledore is more of a punishement to Lucius than anything else.
You'd love to master the Repair spell, I'd love to have a Pensieve personnally, to revisit memories more objectively.
The book shows many more memories about Riddle's past and Dumbledore's quest. The movie is pretty poor in that regard, you miss tons of crucial details.
Harry used the placebo effect on Ron making everyone believe he would be lucky by default... As Ron has lots of self confidence issues, it worked brillantly. Same issues applied to Ron's love for Hermione. Harry let Ron have his little adventure with Lavander Brown to let him build up his confidence with girls.
The saddest par of Slughorn' s shame about telling Voldemort for the Horcruxes is that Slughorn isn't responsible. Riddle already knew how to make them and just tricked Slughorn into telling him to guilt trip him into submission since he knew Slughorn was a friend of Dumbledore. It worked until Harry came into the game of course.
There is no prince or princess in the Wizarding world. Snape's father was a Muggle and quite abusive also. Snape's mother was a potions's master by the name of Eileen Prince.
If it can soothe your pain, we were all like you at the end of the book... Dumbledore dead means the end of peace basically.

Ron in the books is a force to reckon with unlike the movies where he seems like the side joke. Also Ginny is a grade-A badass in the books. They gave most of Rons good lines to Hermione in the movies to enhance her character since in the books she wasnt nearly as impressive as she is in the movies. A lot of Hermione's best lines in the movies were actually Ron's in the books. And the depth of Ginny and Harry's relationship is far far deeper as well, in the movies it feels rushed but in the books it blossoms over several books.

@@Malryth problem with this one is the director changed it to better how he wanted the story to be instead of how it really was. He destroyed the entire Weasely family in the movies, made them look sad and pathetic. Removed Harry and Ginnys relationship because he wanted Harry with Hermione and disliked Ron. There is zero romance or anything other than simple friendship between Harry and Hermione in the books and Harry/Ginny is very well fleshed out. Also Ginny is outright terrifying in the books if you piss her off lol. She was an absolute tyrant that hexed anyone in her way. But like in a good way sorta.

@@dalehammers4425 the screenwriter did that not the director because it was an ongoing thing throughout the entire movie series. Order of the Phoenix was the only script not written by Steve Kloves, who admitted that he preferred Hermione's character. There were 4 different directors so you can't blame them..well except for the guy who directed GOF who didn't even bother reading the source material to get a feel for the characters and world.
Michael Goldenberg did the best he could with OOP considering how much was left out of or changed in GOF because of Kloves and the director that was supposed to lead into other things in OOP. It's the first movie where Ron doesn't seem to be a complete idiot and Ginny gets to show a bit of how powerful she was in the books.

Harry's going through the way he did actually causes them to stumble into each other and Ginny and her boyfriend start arguing with each other (Though Harry doesn't hang around and just goes off). That argument breaks them up, which means that Ginny is single and ready to mingle later. ;D

As the dogs in "Up" Say. I see your four legged friend is wearing the "cone of shame". I hope things are alright. We love several things in this movie. One: Snape being the dark arts teacher. That means next year he won't have it. Two: is getting Slughorn into the school obviously a great teacher, not necessarily good in a crisis. The boys fight over the new book in class and Harry is stuck with the property of the half blood prince. Three: Luna is great. Set a little off center maybe but I find Her adorable. Four: Harry did learn something from Snape his first year. The bezoar. Five: Young love. Everybody is feeling the pain. Six: Snape still teaching even at the end. Things we don't like. One: Harry didn't get that date with the coffee shop girl. Two: in the books we get to see more memory traveling and items that Tom Riddle steals to use as soul vessels. Three: Harry hides ths book by himself. In doing so learns something he doesn't know, that he needs to know in the future. Four: the liquid luck. Harry uses just enough to get the Slughorn memory. The rest he gives to his friends for the battle at Hogwarts. Five: People forget that at the same time we learn about the bezoar, we also learn that Snape can prolong life when he says he can put a stopper in death. He used those skills to slow the progress of the curse that Albus got from the Slytherin ring. Is Snape good? He still fought to keep Harry alive. We know if he wanted Harry dead he'd be dead. Is that so Tom can do it or some other reason? We shall see. Nice job Dasha.

This one is probably the least action-focused, but very enjoyable. The book spends even more time viewing the past to learn Voldemort's history and weaknesses, but we're also given some great school humor before departing for the final journey. The danger of people brewing love potions is given more import in the book, since Tom Riddle was conceived from a marriage forced by one with the father running out the instant the potion wore off.
