- Syntaur's Lucas Fowler steps out from behind the camera to show off the legendary Akai MPC60II MIDI Sequencer and Sampler by giving us a quick overview, then diving down into its inner workings. The MPC60 was first released in 1988, then the MK2 in 1991. Many artists have used the MPC60, from DJ Shadow, DJ Premier, Aphex Twin, Jean-Michel Jarre and even Prince.

The DJ Shadow intro is perfect.
Nothing sequences like a 60. It truly has an amazing groove, swing or not, I've had way too many people doubt this but its 100% true compared to the 3 other MPCs I have. Button layout is amazing, everything is burned into my muscle memory. I also love programming in Step Edit vs any other MPC. Sucks because the 60II is technically better (no voice chip issues & headphone out) but I hate the plasticy look and miss the leather arm rest of the 60. Side note: Sending clock from Ableton (maybe other DAWs as well) fucks with the groove/feel and swing of the MPC, not sure why. Ricky Tinez has videos on it.
Great video! Can't wait to get the MPC 2000 again and talk about it.
Actually, Roger Linn’s “Linn 9000” was the first to feature a drum machine with MIDI keyboard sequencing and sampling all in one. That was back in 1984. MIDI sync and SMPTE were added shortly after. After the closing of Linn Electronics in 1986, Bruce Forat (one of Roger’s employees) took over the assets and kept it running under the moniker Forat Electronics. He is currently still in business today. Nice bloke, too.
Yes! you guys need to do the sp1200!!! the quality you guys have been pushing out is remarkable!
For sure! Thanks for the feedback! -Lucas
I have a MK1, it's a beautiful piece, very easy to use and certainly has that natural smoothness.
Yes! More vintage sampler content please and thanks =)
More coming! Thanks!
The most underated music channel on TH-cam.
Great. I'm always happy to see a new vintage sampler video especially when it has good video and sound quality as this one here.😃 Thank you!
add memory and get +26s sampling,
use the pad corners for velocity variations,
undo function exists in edit loop menu
Dayum, dj shadow song On a syntaur vid! And an mpc! Syntaur is where it's at!
MPC baby!🔥
This is sick!!🤩
that Shadow intro hit me right in the feels
I’ve just started watching and I love it already :)
You guys rock!
Great job guys
such an informative video 🤩 super interesting
Mpc 60 the best
Beautiful Machine..👍
YES LUCAS !!! you go !! :)
Thank you Cris!
it is so tight!
Like just for the DJ Shadow
A nice decent machine 😊 Nicely explained, who wouldn't mind one of these samplers??? Me for one, yes please! Thanks for uploading another well explained video!!!! 👍👍
I've always been more of a E-mu user. The only Akai I ever owned was the S612! I think I paid £85 for it in 1993! Always wanted an MPC for beatmaking, was interested in the Isla Instruments S2400, a bit out with my price range at the moment! Sorely tempted to buy an MPC2000 or 2000XL plenty of people from Japan selling fully upgraded models w SD drives for under £650!
Can't go wrong with a 2000, lovely bit of gear, a real powerhouse.
This is very very cool.
I love the 60 mk2. It's the first one I ever used and it's the one that I saw the most musicians using back in the early 90s. Great demonstrations and walkthrough. I really enjoyed it
Nice job guys! I'm a 60II/3000 + other vintage owner and you did more than cover enough basics to get someone started...👏🏾👏🏾👏🏾👍🏾
Thanks👍
I always wondered how Björk got that sound!
Mutual Slump-Dj Shadow
Starting with a Björk sample! 😀
I want this (or the OG 60) so bad!!! but the silly prices on ebay are upsetting me
From now on: I am going to practice playing piano 🎹 . The guy playing here is very good. I think the first step is to paint my nails red
Akai S01 in my Digitakt 🔥
That's a beautiful looking 60 dude. Did you get it like this or restore?
Can you extract the groove from the sequencer say within ableton and then use that for further sequences and technically having the mpc60 swing without the machine ?
Logic raps about mpc in the doc d mixtape. I wonder which 🤔 the doc d mixtape is absolutely golden and such a mix of sounds.
This is a cool machine, but the prices for them are absurd now.
my mpc 602 samples just fine but im having issues with the output, my volume always ends up with hiss when the turn the volume up on the mpc monitors, and audio interface, maybe im not setting the levels correctly, when monitoring is on or off it makes no difference...so I must not be connecting the output properly or a setting in the mpc 60 that i missed. Any suggestions?
How did DJ Shadow do the timestrechting/pitchshifting? I've heard samples that are a different pitch but the same tempo. Did he do that on a different machine?
Manual timestretching. Look up 8th note chopping
The s612 can do so much more
Just copped the 60 mk1! Quick question, how are you playing the pads without a program selected lol?
He doesn’t know
hello! I am an electrical apprentice and I am very interested in synthesizers and repairing them. however, I’ve never been able to get into it because I do not have connections, nor the money to start practicing. so I am wondering, how would one get into becoming a synthesizer repairman?
just go to school for electrical engineering, it is all the same.
What!? Did Dj Shadow release introducing via MPC data.
Or, did you just sample it in?
It was recreated with the original samples. Thanks!
watching how this devices work is killing lots of myths in your mind
that variable knob thing was used in lots of songs. and you think it's just mpc 60 automatically doing that and in reality it's just a technique
I have a 2005 mpc 500...the cheapest MPC I could find basically..I'd love an original MPC..
The best of the 2000s era units are the ones you can get JJOS for it. This is an enhanced and bug fixed version of the OS done by a former employee. So it's the MPC1000 and MPC2500 to get. The 2500 also has a big screen MOD.
@@6581punk yeah for sure, unfortunately.. when I bought my 500..the 1000 was still $850...so yeah
The mk2 looks so damn ugly compared to the first one
