The complaint then is that it’s not tactile and it’s a dumb complaint. If you’re that safety conscious use the voice commands or adjust the temperature properly before driving. I mean, it’s climate controlled. If you have it set for 70 degrees and it’s cold outside then it will heat up to 70. If it’s hot outside it will cool down to 70.

      That makes sense for car buyers but it doesn't make sense for the car maker. One screen costs a lot less to make than several components and you might think that is penny pinching and it is but that's a result of the fact that modern cars have to have an enormous amount or technology in them by law which needs to be paid for and customers will only put up with certain prices for cars.

  • @lordcarnorjax8599
    @lordcarnorjax8599 16 วันที่ผ่านมา +113

    Doug after 9 minutes does agree that there's basic stuff that shouldn't be in screens. This is what most people are saying. We don't want to adjust the volume on the stereo via the touch screen, we don't want to adjust our intermittent wiper timing in a touch screen, we don't want to select drive or reverse via a slider in a touch screen, we don't want to have to drag our finger on a touch screen to adjust where a air vent blows, we don't want to adjust the climate control's cabin temperature via a area on a touch screen. All this basic stuff that you want to adjust while driving, looking at the road, we want to be able to do via physical buttons & dials that can be done all by feel. We don't want captive touch buttons or sliders that don't provide feedback either. Buttons that click and dials that you turn, that's what we want. repeatedly pushing a up & down button to adjust the volume on the stereo drives me crazy, a simple dial is so much better. There is a happy medium and most car manufacturers have gone too far into touch screen integrations, Telsa is by far the worst offender here but even Hyundai & Kia need to pull it back a bit. The Grenadier having all those buttons works for that car because of it's intended market & use and it was such a glorious sight to behold a manufacturer going the other way. I've got a 2019 GM and that has a perfect balance between buttons, dials and touch screen. Manufactures had the balance right but then went too far.

      And on the topic of "they put it in a screen for cost savings" can't be true for all of these items, because if I have to use a screen to adjust my HVAC vents, that's at least 4 more motor modules with position sensors added to the car just to move something I could move from a finger. That's a lot of added complexity for something so silly.
      (But you do get the benefit of it being driver profile connected, so I can also see the other side)... Although I am never bothered by reaching for a vent.

    I’m an UX Designer who worked in the automotive industry, designing parts of infotainment systems for brands like GM, Ford and Toyota.
    The car’s cockpit or any hardware interfaces should be a subtle balance of functionality and ease of use. This is achieved through uniform connectedness, chunking (grouping) and intuitive proximity (relation of items between each other). If touch screens in cars would not have existed, car designers would still have the difficult and challenging task of arranging every slider and button in the best possible shape, size and position, considering the very creative space limitation, or reach of hand. And as a result, they would prioritize only the most used and important features, and the driver would be much better off. Not only in tactile enjoyment (which is a thing), but also safety, because buttons are always in the same place you left them.
    Instead, thanks to Tesla, we started getting everything shoved into a screen, with very bad prioritization, lack of feedback and design guidelines made for laptops and tablets, instead of drivers who should actually look at the road. To me, this is a copout. An easy and cheap way for manufacturers to deliver functionality, instead of challenging themselves at every step, and coming up with better solutions (like heads-up displays) that would actually move the auto engineering forward.
    So unfortunately, critiquing people who are critiquing touch screens, I think is actually a disservice to the automotive industry, and Doug should know better. Especially as a car enthusiast.

      Absolutely!
      A lot of people are saying that Doug is arguing against a position that no one has, which is true; nobody actually wants all these features to have physical buttons, most people want important functions as physical buttons and niche functions in the touch screen.
      But i do, in fact, have a fairly extreme preference: i want every feature to be a physical button, and i want fewer features. Not once have i wanted to have interior mood lighting in a car.
      I also have a phone, it has all the navigation and podcasts i need. I don't need to have these features redundantly in the infotainment system.

      Screens are necessary for modern day vehicles because there are so many customizable settings you as an owner can do now. But what I can’t stand is the idea of putting functions needed to operate the vehicle on the screen. Things like gear shifter, starting the car (I’m sorry. But I need full confirmation that the car has been turned off. Not a hint. Especially if its an electric car. The last thing I need is to wake up the next day to a dead battery because I thought the car was off but wasn’t.) What happens if the screen crashes? And I have read an article on reports of Tesla owners left stranded because their screens crashed making their cars inoperable. I’d allow certain functions even headlight control on the screen if they have a setup like GM where they default to Auto and rarely ever need to touch them but wiper controls and high beams need to be quick access.

We live in a bizzare age where everything has to be either all or nothing. For example this thing, if you want less things in the infotainment then you hate screens somehow. Why? Have people really become so lazy to listen to the reasoning or is everyone just so eager to berate people by slapping lazy labels on them? Same with opinions. If you agree with someone on one thing then you must automatically agree with them in literally everything they ever said and if they ever said anything let's say racist, then you must be a racist as well. This mentality is so fundamentally wrong and it does my head in. I see it literally every single day.

    I have been a fan of Doug's for almost a decade, but his opinion on the Grenadier makes me lose considerable respect for him and his opinions as a professional automotive journalist. Its not the opinions of "just people who have seen the video who like that stuff" but a lot of other people too. It blows my mind that the very intentional airplane cockpit design is just not entering his head for whatever reason. It looks incredible to me (and a lot of other people) and would love to see a lot more interiors like it in the car industry. Truly a unique, legendary, and arguably timeless design. Does every single little tiny feature need to be on a button? No, that's why we got screens in the first place. Could the interior have been refined a bit better so switches aren't mounted so far back? Absolutely. But don't dismiss this entire genre of design because one company didn't execute it perfectly.
    Edit: I am not advocating for 100% of a car's features to be in a physical button format. Thats absurd and he is correct about there being 8,000 buttons in that case. But balance is what we are talking about. This absolute minimalist approach to car interiors is what is making them dangerous, hard to use, and inconvenient. Balance is key.

  • @2nd-place
    @2nd-place 16 วันที่ผ่านมา +3

    As a UI/UX designer, I disagree with your assessment that buttons are not coming back. As you say, they should be used for essential functions, and so buttons on Tesla models and similar will come back.
    There will be more screens, but there will also be buttons for most crucial functions. I see this happening all the time in UI/UX. When there is a change in the industry, things swing too far in one direction, then swing back and end up somewhere in the middle. And if that doesn't somehow end up happening, then I think it will be regulated by government organizations because of safety concerns.
    In UI/UX I typically follow the 80/20 rule. I make 80% of the things people use most often easily available to find and use. The other 20% I tuck away. And the 80% most used might only be a few things, while the 20% might be hundreds. In a car, you shouldn't be adjusting your "rear ambient light color temperature slider", as stated in your example, while driving. While driving, you should be able to do essential functions such as control music, control cruise control, control air conditioning, adjust your seat position, adjust side mirrors, and more. The answer is not to put your gear shifter on a screen, like Tesla!
    Furthermore, Tesla is not a good comparison. They are starting to tank. People like Tesla because it's the best EV, not because of the screen or because they are especially nice vehicles. They are fast and have long range. They are working with borrowed time, and that time is now running out on them.

    The only reason everything in a car is getting incorporated into the screen is because touch screens are cheaper than physical buttons and knobs. Plus when next generation or face lift model comes to the market instead of redesigning the whole dashboard you can just change the overlay design of those touch buttons inside the screen which is way cheaper. Anything that all giant car manufacturer do is just to save cost as much as they can before the customer walks away.

    I’m a designer who works a lot in UI / UX design. And I’m here to explain why buttons work better than screens…. To a point.
    I think we all understand that with any car going anywhere above 5mph, we should always be looking at the road. With buttons, we tend to have muscle memory and remember specific textures and shapes. Climate control and volume are probably the biggest things we tend to interact with. But with other cars like a tesla, that would be secondary to say a turn signal, lights, wipers or shifter. On a screen, we can’t feel those interactions. And while haptic is a thing, we tend to look at the screen first, with the haptic being something more in the lines of being a confirmation that we executed that interaction. So, by that very nature, we still have to take our eyes away from the road. We still live in a world where touch screen UI/UX is heavily regulated by vibration or sound notifications because the tactile feel just isn’t there. If anything, you’d have to remember where that button exists on a screen. That doesn’t sound bad, but what happens when you press the wrong button? If you’re driving and you want to mute your radio for a second, you had better make sure you know where that button is in relation to your reverse button. On a traditional car, they are in one, two different locations and two, the tactile feel is very different for both mechanical objects. Its very design is a failsafe.
    I understand that cars are becoming more and more complicated, but a lot of us are using those screens for the initial setup and using apple car play or android auto 99% of the time, and that’s either podcasts/music, answering a phone (which is usually a button on a steering wheel if they integrate it correctly) or using satnav.
    What I think a lot of this deals with is cost savings. Why create a new plastic or metal part when most things are digital, right? They save money, and they market touch screens as the next generation or high class. When they’re just saving money, but not passing that savings on to us. And now we have to deal with over the air firmware updates (and without patch notes mind you.. you have no idea how much that upsets me), with screens that sometime freeze or lag and without options for you to add third party screens or head units. It’s the whole TV/VCR combo, and something I saw with Hoovie. The screen might work, the radio might work, but the hvac system is bugged and no longer works. Now you have to replace the entire head unit because if one doesn’t work, all of it doesn’t work.
    I think a combo of both is necessary, but again, it’s about cost savings and these car manufacturers need to hire UI/UX designers but also industrial designers. But you know, capitalism, and that cost savings don’t go to us.
    Thank you and have a great week!

Automakers that are trying to become software experts are discovering just how challenging good UX/UI design is to make, hence the popularity of android auto / apple carplay.

      Tesla has physical controls for volume, cruise control, and seat movement. You don't need seat memory because the car knows who's driving based on the phone that connects and automatically adjusts the seat (and mirrors, climate, vent positions, driving settings, etc). Seat and steering wheel warmers come on automatically depending on ambient temp and weight in the seat. Climate is on the screen, but it's right there at the bottom left. Drive mode selector is on the screen for newer models, and I agree that that's a step too far.
