What is the best way to pick a mushroom?

One thing I’ve noticed help with mushroom patches regardless of if you pick or cut it you can tap the mushroom before you pick it to release the spores, the next time you come there will be more mushrooms

The way I heard this was when you pull it exposes the mycelium to contamination by bacteria.
