The crazy part about the final battle against Crimson 1 is that the footage in the video doesn’t even scratch the surface of how insane it can get. On the maximum difficulty and with a specific challenge active, you can fight 2 of Crimson’s super planes along with 8 wingmen, who also have the micro missile launcher. Leading the crazy situation of having to dodge upwards of 200 missiles, at once.
The final Crimson fight was also awful because the sky mines didn’t have the warning areas and just looked like flares, and it was impossible to tell where they were because depth perception is difficult on a 2d screen. I loved it
I really like how chill the voice actors of the game are. There’s a clip of the voice actor for Crimson 1 just reading off the navy seal copypasta but adjusting it to talk about monarch. Or how the voice actress for prez reads the copypasta for where a missile knows where it is. And the voice actor for the mercenary group leader is the shield general form of the emperor had a Text to speech device. Just a fun loving group!
The best one of those is Prez's voice actor doing an in character dub of the rather famous "put the nose on him and kill him!" clip. The original clip is hilarious because the pilot is just trying to complete his exercise meanwhile his instructor in the back seat is so exited that his student has executed it so well that not only has he evaded the trailing plane but hes managed to get behind it and can actually win the simulated dog fight he just goes nuts. It gets even funnier when you imagine Prez screaming it at the mute psychopath that is monarch sitting in front of her
One of the best details of the last dogfight, is that at the start of the fight it flashes Crimsons squadron emblem on your screen and puts a health bar on the bottom, like every boss of the game. When he's on his last leg and Monarch is about to win, it flashes Monarch's emblem, and puts YOUR health bar at the bottom on top of Crimson 1's, as if you are now the boss.
On Merc difficulty, all healthbars and ammo counters dissapear. The scene, the stakes at play....the switch from "Kings" to "Coronation"... Litteral goosebumps
In addition, the bosses have a deep groan as a siren when they enter. When the change happens, a lighter tone plays. You are not being warned about Crimson-1, Crimson-1 is being warned about you.
Fun fact, during the final mission, if you position the camera to look at monarch and Prez, when she starts talking about how she can't handle the Gs, you can see her model slump over in the backseat as she faints
I remember reading somewhere that it's implied in game that Monarch's callsign isn't because he's a king but because he's really into butterflies and everyone just always reads too far into it. Not sure if true but funny regardless
Also worth mentioning that this plays into the Butterfly Effect. Everyone goes insane over the Crowned Merc, but they're actually just a little butterfly, flapping their wings and causing a snowstorm... or a revolution.
My theory for Monarch's callsign is that they got a bad case of food poisoning and was stuck on the toilet for a whole day. They'd keep yelling from the bathroom demanding water and medicine and the rest of the squad joked that they were a "Monarch ruling from their throne".
Or it could be a monarch butterfly, and everyone keeps thinking that monarch is trying to rule the skies. Maybe they just like studying small, colourful winged insects in their downtime
@@ComedicLetter Nah, that's not embarrassing enough. You get a callsign for screwing up so bad you earn a nickname in recognition of your screw-up and for others to tell everyone that you aren't to be trusted with a toothpick.
@@ComedicLetter nah, it's a tradition for call signs in any military branch to have some sort of embarrassing backstory. "Diplomat" for example probably got his callsign after hitting on someone and getting smacked in the face. "Comic" may have gotten hers after cracking a joke at the expense of a SO and had clean latrines for a week as punishment.
Do not forget about the leader of the Sicario‘s Kaiser being based by saying “To all mercenaries, do not count days, do not count miles, count only the number of Feds you've killed!”
@@samlevy9897, I believe that's for the second to last mission as they're clearing Presidia of Federation forces. Kaiser has by this point lost his entire company and has had to create another, and he's fucking pissed. At the beginning of the war he had a distaste for Feds, by the end he doesn't take prisoners.
The first time I played it, I started yelling asking her if she's ok. That is how emotionally attached I got to her. This was also before I even interacted with anyone in the community, so I didn't even know how popular she was
@@0uttaS1TE Ace Combat* Although I would say the fanbases overlap massively because they are both japanese games with high stakes, high speed gameplay, a general disregard for realism, military million dollar equipment fanboyism, crazy stupid world conquest plots, mercenaries and a niche but intense passion.
PW def was made For Ace Combat fans, there was legit no learning curve to this game for me, just hoped in with my flight stick and off I went. I feel it’s a nice evolution of the game as well with the multiple special weapon slots and countermeasure options. While Ace Combat 7 added the part system to upgrade performance, having more weapons felt so good and gave so many options. Like for ground attack missions I loved loading a attack plane with all guns on the pods. You couldn’t do that in Ace Combat. Also playing thru the whole game in VR is awesome as well and highly recommended for any Ace Combat fan who didn’t have a PSVR for their PS4 (me). Also Armored Core is also one of my favorite franchises since the beginning. Master of Arena is still one of my favorite games. Awesome to see another fan!
This game actually made me feel extremely hollow upon completing it. I've played Ace Combat games all my life, but this final boss fight didn't feel like a win. It felt like a struggle for survival, and I was left devastated by the effect of the war had on the people I had fought so hard for. I was legitimately stuck in a state of shock, disbelief, and grief for almost 2 days. Project Wingman sucked me into the cockpit and didn't let me go. And I'll always love it for that.
As I've been saying since I completed it: It doesn't feel like a victory because it isn't. Shooting down Crimson 1 wasn't a mission, or a victory--it was damage control. Putting down a mad king that ruined the land.
@@Assassin5671000 no, she's doesn't affect the story at all. It's just extra dialogues and contextual comments she gives - those are good for immersion and some lore, but the main effect is that the only task-adequate plane you'll have at the late game would be Sk.25 for ground attack missions, while your top fighter plane would be F/D-14, which is outperformed by any other fighter in the second half of the game. Prez is more of a wholesome meme and cool addition than an actual feature or a necessity.
i like how in some games or just fiction in general, some characters dont have official artwork but the comunity agrees on a specific look that just fits and everyone goes with it
My only complaint is that Prez is canonically Filipino so it'd be nice if we got to see that represented a little better, though the blonde look definitely hits good
The ironic part of Bricky's conclusion to something being rated overwhelmingly positive, is that his own videos fulfill the exact criterias that makes him and his content absolutely deserve overwhelmingly positive. Yes, this is my Steam review for Bricky. You can't stop me!
Fun fact-- setting up a HOTAS (flight stick and throttle) has never been easier in any game. Idk how these guys nailed it but it doesn't matter the stick or throttle, it'll recognize it and let you calibrate. Legendary accessibility setting.
Man, I'm just glad finding more people playing Arcade Flight games, the genre's got slept on real hard. It's even more fun playing Ace Combat and Project Wingman than playing any shooters, any open worlds, any pop genres out there. I've been a fan of these games last year, finished AC7, AC0, Project Wingman and now playing AC5. They're my saviour of gaming to me atleast.
@@xxgeorgiakidxx673 they did only Peacekeeper II, Kings and Medley (which contained almost full Showdown), that's it. That's Ace Combat which received like 2-hour long anniversary concert with various tracks from various games (with actually not so many tracks from each games as well though).
One of my favourite details of the game is, at the very end of the game, when you beat Crimson 1, he has a small moment of reconciliation. He realises that he screwed up, just how far gone he was, and right before he explodes he gives Monarch a warning: "When you hear the thunder, when the storm comes for you, remember me." We don't know much about Crimson's life or what he had to go through to snap as greatly as he did, but in his final moments he recognises that Monarch may very well suffer the same fate, asking him to be remembered not for who he was, but how terrible of a person he became. The writing is just tight with little things like this and I love it
Same here. I started the game and went "Hey, it's the same control scheme War Thunder has!" Then i remembered that Ace Combat 7 was unplayable with the true(tm) controls on gamepad and played on. Come on, you can do an immelman, what else do you want? Also, for my first two playthroughs i didnt even know Prez is my WSO. How the heck should i know that? Besides, best plane is SP-34R aka The Chad Gunpod MiG, so best waifu is Frost. Fite me.
Your punishment is Double Time on Mission 11 with the F-4 Have fun evading 11 enemy missiles at once every single second for 4 hours, coming from all directions
My favourite moment of Project Wingman was Crimson I coming in at the last moment, before yelling "It's crimson'in time!" and nuking Prospero.... And Presidia as well.
He only nuked Presidia. The Federation were the ones who nuked Prospero, those cruise missiles were fired by a Federation mobile artillery battalion from the ground, not by planes. In fact, that's part of the reason why Crimson 1 grows obsessed with Monarch, believes everything is his fault and eventually goes AWOL from the Federation and nukes Presidia too. He blames Monarch for letting things get to the point where the Federation OKs nuking Prospero and believes with the war and the Second Calamity leaving the Federation and Cascadia both in pieces, both his homeland and the government he was fighting for are dead anyways, so might as well finish things.
My biggest complaint about Project Wingman is that most of the better planes are single seater 🤣. You think there would be a hidden option in the gameplay options to toggle WSO for all planes. That way you don't have to download a 3rd part mod :)
I like to see this game as sitting alongside Ace Combat. I absolutely love the Ace Combat series and grew up with it, so playing through this game felt really nostalgic to me. I really hope that this niche genre is kept alive, and I have a little more hope now this game exists! Also this video is absolutely hilarious Bricky keep it up.
The genre has made a resurgence since the doldrums of post AC Assault Horizon considering AC7 was the best selling AC game, this game was a big success with DLC (supposedly) in the works and there is an new Ace Combat project currently in development.
Considering how Ace Combat 7 is the best selling Ace Combat game ever and they're currently in development for the new game. The genre will still be there for years to come.
Something I love about the last mission (or... 'recorded' mission) is you've already fought those Naval ships. They're the ones you bombed and were in repair. These men have seen your unit burn their allies alive and lived to tell the tale, and now here you are again, come to finish the job. They are sent out because what else are they going to do? Its a desperation move of sacrifice, the wounded and bandaged lifting a rifle in the end. Its great
Awesome to see Bricky cover this game, I helped bug test and balance the game and the devs were incredibly passionate about the project. Even the voice actors for the game were hugely involved. Also, the voice actors absolutely were random people that the devs had in their community. Lots of the random background chatter are just people from their discord server.
The ending to this is imo quite like the ending to Metal Gear Rising. Armstrong has been basically a regular dude all the way through the story, then in the span of like 10 minutes becomes one of the most insanely over the top, epic boss fights in the game.
That Deep Rock Galactic segment made me realise how much I want to see a little 15min video from you on it (or longer, I sure won’t complain), that would absolutely rock and stone
The story and the ending fights reminded me a TON of ace combat zero (which has nukes, railguns, bullshit, and *tunnels*), and that was done by...more than 3 people. This game was epic.
I'm pretty sure the PW team has gone on record saying that their inspiration for this game was the "golden trilogy" Ace Combat games, with Zero being the biggest influence. They started making it when it looked like Ace Combat as a franchise was dead, and the fact that Ace Combat 7 was announced was something no one saw coming. Wingman was always meant to be a love letter to those games written posthumously, but it holds up well even in the face of the franchise that inspired it getting a new lease on life.
Oh it goes deeper. You duel Crimson 1, who believes he's done nothing wrong despite doing everything he could have possibly done wrong, while being the last remaining mercenary of Sicario, whose symbol is a wolf. You're no longer fighting for the CIF or anyone else, you're fighting to settle a grudge. It's literally Magnus versus Leman
I’m surprised you didn’t talk about conquest mode. Got so many trailer moments in that mode and the escalation of you building up your own personal air force is awesome
And the fact that King's Court is on par with Showdown and Kings as one of the best songs in the game, albeit in a more chill, subdued manner but amazing nonetheless.
This game was mostly based on Ace Combat Zero. Still one of the most amazing games I have ever played. Its so beautiful. Theres also good attention to detail like Prez’s model will fall forward when she passes out as heard in the radio chatter.
This games soundtrack is literally hounding my dreams. I literally wake up humming showdown and I love every second of it. I can't wait to hear more of Jose's work, he's currently working on an aerial warfare audioplay, basically just music and voicelines with some comics. Here's hoping it's coming soon.
Speaking of the absolutely incredible action moments in this game, I once had a moment where I was flying directly towards an airship, I think it was a heavy one, shot it down and then *flew through the hole in its wings* completely unscathed
Also while I wasn't expecting it, couldn't help but hope bricky and the dev team coordinated this with a dlc announcement. The completely unfounded expectations I had have left me disappointed and my day is ruined
I didn't know Bricky's Danny Devito impression was something I needed in my life. Also, it's very telling that Bricky is blow away by the soundtrack and over the top dogfights, Ace Combat had a lot of that from the Kamehameha lazer in Zero, to the Unsung War banger of a song that was Ace Combat 5.
A few things i wanna say. 1 good job bricky you can have a lil warcrime, as a treat 2 Monarch being named after the butterfly not the concept is really funny to me. Additonally the reason all of them have flattering names is likely cuz they are mercs. 3 One of the things pw does well is build the power fantasy of the player. The grim satisfaction i got when everyone is terrified that the "crown" is here and ronin giving his graces to the "king of hell" are just moments i never got in any other game. 4 if you take a 2 seater into Kings prez passes out because of your air manouvers, if you wanna know what happens to the others you gotta finish the game on mercenary. that is all you can go away now.
Speaking of the Sountrack: Jose Pavli, the composer of this game, has actually made a Project Wingman orchestral anniversary video here on youtube. I highly suggest for you to check it out.
12:40 That’s what he did. Crimson 1’s voice actor is literally some dude he met in a discord call and went “hey you wanna voice a character in this game im making?” “Sure”
I kind of feel like great games don’t need or may even be hindered by trying to add new features or have super broad appeal If a team can focus on what they want to do, get it to work and look as nice as it needs to and present it with sincerity it’s going to at least be good and often can be great
Man I love Bricky. In this Video alone he: 1. Brought more attention to this super cool game 2. Was remarkably humble and respectable about his Patreon at the end 3. Most importantly, gave us all this Prez best girl content!!
I played it and it was my first 'funny plane game'. I couldn't beat the railgun fighter mission because I was using a joystick. Put a vr headset on and that ability to look around without waiting to reset the camera was so helpful that I recommend using it
Bricky's videos recently have been very insightful, entertaining, and easy for a visual learner like me to understand with all the kinds of things he edits in each one, like in his Warhammer and Darktide videos, he makes them all look really good.
My trailer moment on project wingman was when I was flying the Sk-25 on the suwaiiki mission, aka Pearl Harbor 2: electric boogaloo, when the air battleships came back. I flew way too close, and without really realizing it, flew right through the Gap in the airship wings with my astonished younger brother jaw dropping behind me, as the one who introduced me to the game
6:05 For what it's worth, those missiles are Semi Active Anti Air missiles. The reason you have to keep the target in the hexagonal shape is because the missile is reliant on recieving returning radiation from the launching plane's radar for it's guidance, and will go "stupid" if the lock is lost. Their NATO brevity code for launch is Fox-1.
Prez in the finale: "I'm... I'm sorry..." * faints* Also Prez: * smacks drums with unrivaled intent while Monarch focuses on the fight wholeheartedly. Prez is also smiling smuggly and is still pretending to be unconscious. *
This video is giving me the feeling of an insanely popular channel, I'm glad I'm going to be able to say I watched bricky before he was super popular or whatever because man, if you keep this up you're going to explode. This is amazing
AAA Devs make stuff like Battlefield 2042 and yet three guys make THIS, 4 guys make HOLLOW KNIGHT. Proof that all the money in the world can't replace Passion.
I'm shocked there was only one vague reference to the fact some of the voice actors in this game are the TTS cast. like. DORN is your mission briefing guy!
If you haven’t already, Prez has extra scenes that were made after the game became really famous where she made an extra line that makes her sound like an ABSOLUTELY CRAZY person. It’s lovely, look it up TH-cam
Been a hot minute since I played a game like this... I think the last time was Ace Combat on the Xbox 360 or PS2 (can't remember), though the Liberation of Gracemaria still holds a place in my mind. This game though... This looks interesting. Thank you, Bricky! c:
Ace combat 6 Fires of Liberation for the 360 is so good! Cheesy as hell and I love it so much! "Attention all planes, we're going to take back Gracemeria today!" Still get goosebumps thinking about it!
I kinda love how I’ve seen 3 reviews of this, all entertaining. But what I think will finally get me to buy it, is Bricky’s love for Prez. None of the others mentioned her, but instantly I find myself pushed over the edge to buy it for that reason.
Love to see Bricky gushing about projects of passion that deserve our attention. As always the editing is S+ Tier, the gameplay and meme content is perfectly balanced as all things should be, and we even got waifu material! Awesome work Bricky
I absolutely bet you that given the order of operations and when things came out, since Project Wingman is an Ace Combat fan game, the dev and writer played the Alicorn DLC for Ace Combat 7 and went "Yo, what if..."
AoA (angle of attack) limiters are an actual thing in many aircraft, they had to put them in the f18 because the plane was to powerfull and pilots would knock themselves unconcius from high G
You can just see the sheer maneuverability in the game from the absolute mess of vapor trails whenever he turns around. Especially in the crimson fight
As someone who has replayed this game countless times. I absolutely love you found this game and actually enjoyed it. When you take into account everyone behind this game were massive fans of the ace combat series.
Fun fact in the last mission prez blacks out because of how based you are Bricky: let’s murder this s.o.b die. How dare you touch her Crimson: (cries out in fear)
Honestly the best part about PW is that it doesn't go the Ace combat route of constantly beating you over the head with "war bad war bad" When you look under the skin of the story of project wingman it's a story about how sometimes war is just inevitable. Cascadia didn't want to keep getting the short end of the stick and keep fueling the feds war machine, and the feds weren't about to give up the near unlimited power source, war was the only alternative here. Yeah it sucks but it's just going to happen. So it's best to be ready.
My gf became my WSO when I played Ace Combat 7 and her imput and reactions to the reckless flyin' and somehow makin' shit work all the time enhanced the experience
Honestly, big props to you for being so upfront and ethical about your Patreon. Might need to slip into twitch for a little dono goodness my wonderful wife determining brick.
This game is honestly where I got my name.. and logo- I'm still pissed there isn't an F35 in this game. Also, I use mouse and keyboard so suck it- Anyways, The game is REALLY good. amazing music, great models, and good character development. If you think it's really easy, try mercenary mode. You will thank me.
Project Wingman was love at first sight for me. I've played Ace Combat 7 and wanted more and then I saw PW. And it even had VR. So much content and such an amazing soundtrack. I love it! And the destruction of California is BASED beyond recognition.
You may not come back to Project Wingman, but I do hope you'll still play funny plane games regardless, Ace Combat included. Zero and 7 specifically are a must-play when it comes to funny plane games imo, 7's DLC mission in particular hitting a high mark.
did... did he just invoke [Crazy Talk] intentionally? with the prez bit... and the... the BALLS on this man. the sheer BALLS. 10/10 best youtuber. now don't mind me i'm not going to check out the Prez art at ALL.
You realize that the last mission fits perfectly in place after you start playing on Mercenary mode, when the very first mission greets you with a BML-Us and ace squadron, while every subsequent have no shortage of airships, land battleships and railguns as well.
You definitely need to try it in VR. It's a gutural experience, it completely transforms the funny plane game into the wildest orange juice themed roller coaster in the world.
Did you know Crimson 1 was a guy the devs met on discord call and asked to voice Crimson? facts like these are what makes this game even better. And if you listen to the last monologue Crimson does, he is projecting so hard, He is going through the 5 stages of grief. Denial, Anger, Bargaining, Depression. You can hear how the monologing changes when you hit him and move to different phases and in the end, the last stage, Acceptance; "Monarch, When you hear the thunder. When the storm comes for you, remember me." he has accepted what happend and and everything that lead to the end. Because he is you. You are the different sides of same coin. He sees himself in you who made the difficult choices to be on the other side as he made his choices and only had regrets from them in the end as he couldn't stay true to himself. Thats why you can listen to the last monolog and ether thing he is cursing you, or maybe he is giving you a warning not to do same mistakes as he did, so you would stay true to yourself. Thats why i hate Crimson. He is one of the very few video game characters that GENUINLY made me mad. All the monologing how everything is our fault and how we are in the way of his peace is just ludacrious. I hate him, i genuinly hate him as he is so well writen character and the voice actor really sells it well! Got to love Good/Bad Villains that make you feel feelings towards them! :D Did you know Monarch's nickname comes from Monarch Butterfly that is his emblem. Free and unbound. Not a ruler. Like people ingame think it comes from. What was your favorite mission? Mine was 11, that is one of the greatest furballs ever, the amount of missile pron is just ludacrious and its so much effing FUN :D the game also borrows heavily from one of the Ace Combat games. it also works given how insane you fly in this game so making fun of him for that is funny
Proof
Also worth mentioning that this plays into the Butterfly Effect.
Everyone goes insane over the Crowned Merc, but they're actually just a little butterfly, flapping their wings and causing a snowstorm... or a revolution.
ngl, his emblem does resemble a butterfly
My theory for Monarch's callsign is that they got a bad case of food poisoning and was stuck on the toilet for a whole day. They'd keep yelling from the bathroom demanding water and medicine and the rest of the squad joked that they were a "Monarch ruling from their throne".
Or it could be a monarch butterfly, and everyone keeps thinking that monarch is trying to rule the skies.
Maybe they just like studying small, colourful winged insects in their downtime
@@ComedicLetter Nah, that's not embarrassing enough.

For Ace Combat fans, there was legit no learning curve to this game for me, just hoped in with my flight stick and off I went.

One of my favourite details of the game is, at the very end of the game, when you beat Crimson 1, he has a small moment of reconciliation. He realises that he screwed up, just how far gone he was, and right before he explodes he gives Monarch a warning:
"When you hear the thunder, when the storm comes for you, remember me."
We don't know much about Crimson's life or what he had to go through to snap as greatly as he did, but in his final moments he recognises that Monarch may very well suffer the same fate, asking him to be remembered not for who he was, but how terrible of a person he became.
The writing is just tight with little things like this and I love it

He said "it's orange time" and orange'd all over the place
Leman russ would be proud
*we reeeeealy need to stop naming places Prospero*- Rimmy
BuRnInG oF PrOsPeRo!?!?!?!?

I like to see this game as sitting alongside Ace Combat. I absolutely love the Ace Combat series and grew up with it, so playing through this game felt really nostalgic to me. I really hope that this niche genre is kept alive, and I have a little more hope now this game exists!
Also this video is absolutely hilarious Bricky keep it up.
The genre has made a resurgence since the doldrums of post AC Assault Horizon considering AC7 was the best selling AC game, this game was a big success with DLC (supposedly) in the works and there is an new Ace Combat project currently in development.
The voice lines remind me of AC: Zero. Hell, even the burning city (Operation: Cannibal). And the mercenaries.
Given we were fighting cyborgs the whole time, who would’ve thought the best boss fight was against a Nanomachine Augmented Politician?

Also while I wasn't expecting it, couldn't help but hope bricky and the dev team coordinated this with a dlc announcement. The completely unfounded expectations I had have left me disappointed and my day is ruined
Your unreasonable disappointment gave me a good laugh, gotta thank you for that.
1 good job bricky you can have a lil warcrime, as a treat
2 Monarch being named after the butterfly not the concept is really funny to me.
"No timmy, the Geneva Convention is a guideline, not a checklist!" is a truly legendary quote

Honestly the best part about PW is that it doesn't go the Ace combat route of constantly beating you over the head with "war bad war bad"
When you look under the skin of the story of project wingman it's a story about how sometimes war is just inevitable. Cascadia didn't want to keep getting the short end of the stick and keep fueling the feds war machine, and the feds weren't about to give up the near unlimited power source, war was the only alternative here. Pixy but he likes borders, is a hypocrit, and schizophrenic
