    In this video, we extend my earlier video on setting up flaps, flaperons, and spoilerons in ETHOS. This time we also add elevator compensation and use the slow up and slow down options to make the transition longer. As a little bonus, I also throw in full span ailerons at the end too.
    Please note: In the video I show up elevator to compensate for down flaps. This is usually correct for regular flaps and flaperons. But, coming in fast, they can cause balooning, which would require down elevator. Also, down elevator would be used for crow braking; where both flaps go down and both ailerons go up. The best thing to donis start with low values, test a few mistakes high, and see what works best for your plane and approach speed.
    Another note is that the values I'm using in the video for compensation are just for demo purposes. You should try with no compensation first. Then add compensation if it's needed, and gradually increase it.

    Again, hats off! A great, well paced and thought out video - The best TH-cam channel on Ethos there is. The second method you used for "Full span ailerons" has the advantage of being able to be turned on/off with another switch.

      @@MrD Hi Darren,
      I have a x18x and trying to get a avian 15 set up for my glider. The surface channels work, rudder and elevator, but I can't get the throttle to work. I went thru the set up procedure and it won't work. It give a continuous beep. It worked with my old 2.4 Futaba, not sure what's wrong.
      Any ideas would be great.

    thanks for the video, a bit more complicated then OpenTX/EdgeTX, video is well done but shows why they really need to bring out the edit ability on a companion app; this is fine for a couple of models but it's too much to program on the transmitter itself when you are converting from the previously mentioned EdgeTX

    Thanks Darren! this video helped me indirectly because I have a STOL plane with quite massive flaps that are set with a delay up and down to minimize the jump when deployed.
    I had the mix already programed but the flap to ele mix did no allow me to set the same delay on the elevator until I saw you using a free mix on it

    Hi Darren. Shouldn't you have down elevator compensation.

    • @MrD
      @MrD  ปีที่แล้ว

      In all honesty, I've seen both. This is why I suggest starting without any compensation and gradually increasing it. With standard flaps, you should need up elevator. The flap control surfaces are behind the centre of rotation, so will push the nose down. However, if people are coming in too fast and drop the flaps, it can cause ballooning, which would require down elevator. Seeing what happens when the flaps are deployed at typical landing speeds, on a particular model is the best way to see what, if any, elevator compensation is needed.

    Hey Darren, thanks for your videos, well done, very helpful. Could you possibly make a video where you program a simple powered glider with rudder and elevator on the right stick, spoiler on the left stick and motor on the left side slider. Most videos I see are for power planes with ailerons and full house gliders which I also fly. I see you can change the mode of the sticks, but it changes them for all models not just the one you are programing. Thanks.

    Tutto molto bello e spiegato con precisione.
    Ma ho notato che il timone di profondità sale quando abbassi i flaps. La giusta posizione dovrebbe essere: flaps giù e profondità giù.
    Come bisogna fare per invertire il profondità?
    Grazie mille (scusami ma non so l'inglese)

      You just need to reverse the weight of the elevator compensation.

  • @alwaysflying6540
    @alwaysflying6540 4 หลายเดือนก่อน

    Wow. Ethos is way easier to use than edgetx. There is less to think about with the mixing. I use radiomaster and it's great but there is a lot of unnecessary work. Maybe they will do something about that in the future

    Hey Darren...How can I set up a beep or haptic in Ethos to activate when the throttle passes through 25 and 50% up or down? I trim all my planes at 50% and use 25% for landing approach on my EDF's. This is easily done on Spektrum but I can't figure it out on Ethos.....Thanks ( Rains are finally returning this weekend to the Pacific Nortwest so I will have a wet Fall and Winter to learn Ethos)

    Why not use flight modes to trim the elevator during flap deployment?

    • @MrD
      @MrD  ปีที่แล้ว

      Because current flight modes in ETHOS are an area that still needs work. Currently you can only have different trims per flight mode. You can’t specify if they are based on another flight mode’s trim. For example with the elevator compensation, the default flight mode will adjust the trim of the elevator. Then switch to the flap flight mode. If the trims are independent, it will be back to 0 trim and you need to adjust it for flaps down. But where they’re totally independent, if in the default flight mode you adjust the elevator again, it won’t be reflected in the flaps mode.
      In OpenTX, you could do this. The flaps mode could make the elevator trim in addition to the elevator trim of the default mode. Which makes everything so much better.
      Hopefully ETHOS will improve the flexibility and functionality of the flight modes soon.

    What did you use to color/laminate your arwing?

    • @MrD
      @MrD  ปีที่แล้ว

      It’s just regular encapsulating laminate, ironed on. The coloured parts are self adhesive, cut vinyl.
      This is the laminate I used. www.ebay.co.uk/itm/303038800488 I used 75 micron thick, 457mm wide. The 75 micron thickness is the important part. The width is just how much you ca fit on with less length used. These rolls last for years though.

  • @WickedMoto
    @WickedMoto ปีที่แล้ว

    Can you not set a flight condition where you can separate elevator trim and trim flaps out instead of using compensation?

    • @MrD
      @MrD  ปีที่แล้ว

      I don't believe so. The trim options in the current implementation of flight modes in ETHOS doesn't have much scope.

    • @jrdsx12

      How to set elevator trim using flight mode

  • @jrdsx12
    @jrdsx12 ปีที่แล้ว +1

    How to set elevator trim using flight mode
    When the flaps are in position 1 Elevator compensation 1
    When the flaps are in position 2, rudder compensation 2
    When flaps are closed Elevator trim reset

    • @MrD
      @MrD  ปีที่แล้ว

      This is not possible with flight modes at the moment. Flight modes can have their own trims. But you can’t choose how. For flaps, it would be ideal to base the elevator trim in a flap flight mode, on the elevator trim in the standard flight mode. Then any changes to regular trim would also be reflected in the flaps.

    Too complicated. You can set the FLAP - ELEV mix using as input the FLAP channel. Doing that if the flap is slow, the elev mixing is slow. You can leave always on, or assign a switch with the voice "THS ON" that means Trimmable Horizontal stabilizer ON. As you prefer

  • @conradtaggart9959
    @conradtaggart9959 ปีที่แล้ว +2

    Great video though I don't believe you want your elevator going up as you deploy your flaps in most instances as the majority of planes and gliders will pitch up ( see at 4 mins th-cam.com/video/xRg5M9kWjRI/w-d-xo.html ) when flaps are deployed not down - might be worth putting a few bullet points on this at the relevant point so people check what happens to their actual aircraft when they deploy flaps or at least start from the norm

    • @MrD
      @MrD  ปีที่แล้ว

      There is a note in the video description. I find that it depends on the plane and approach speed. Down elevator is needed if the plane balloons. But that doesn’t always happen.
