Mike the same thing happened to me. An old man in my neighborhood (1990) was using a split window 66 bus as a storage shed. He gave it to me for free to remove it from his yard! I fixed the motor and sold it for $900 and thought I was pretty clever!!! I do miss that bus. Cheers and thanks for the videos!
When will my Ghia look like that? Lol! May your video go viral and make ya rich! I wish i could make videos like this but i got an accent i cant get rid of lol. Cheers!
I am not sure what wiring are 74 specific that they dont have on the harness if anything. but I would use another year and rework it to work. All the year vws have the same color wires so it should not be hard.
Getting a 71 Super wired up, thought I would take a look. Everything is numbered, no dispute there but. The wiring is primitive. Too many places for voltage drops, too many "Tees"(where more than one wire in a crimp connector) too much use of low quality crimp connectors, but hey it was the 60's-70's go buy a Pinto or Vega. If you compare electrical systems with even a basic car of today the VW is a Flintstone type vehicle. Crimp connectors are prefered to soldering but use the best connectors you can find and the correct crimp pliers (Betts Company makes a great pair). I find it difficult to diagnosis the simple ins and outs at the windshield washer switch. You see in his picture how every connection to the spade on the fuse box is unobstructed (you can see what is going where?) On my Super it is just a big ball of wires sitting on the fuse box. The wires are all covered with overspray from a paint job.
Thanks for the vid man, i just have one problem. I have a 71 type 1 bug, and the problem is the emergency flasher relay buzzes every time i hook up the turn signal warning light. The original config was for a 4 pin relay but the previous owner replaced it with a 3 pin. What do i do?
Hi. Thanks for your videos. I have a 72 ghia. And recently, when i turn on my headlights, i get a burning electrical smell from the knob. Not sure what to do,..maybe buy a new unit? What u think?
Ccould I see a video on this car about the fuel gauge light also speedometer light hooked to light switch? Also the hot wire from the horn to fues? Please that would help me alot! 🙂 thank you so much for those videos.
most of the time it is fuses and connections. take your fuses out and sand the contacts. also check the contacts at each of the connections all the way to the tail light. Sometimes the slip on connectors break too. The best tool to have is a harbor freight test light to test all the connections. Must have.
I have been playing with it. I think the entire turn signal mechanisms might be out. I had a dull light when I pressed hard and played with the turn signal arm on the steering wheel. Once I get the car to my house, I can devote more time to playing with electrical. Right now I have it at another location that is a bit more secure. Runs good though.
yea that sounds like the problem often they have a weird looseness and the switch is bad. Wolfsburg west makes new ones for that year. Also you can take them apart there is a snap ring on the switch. Need to remove it and the steering wheel to access.
I have been shopping in the catalogs for them Wolfsburg is one of those. They get pricey, especially the German ones. I just have to get one. No doubt it is related to that. Thanks for the advice
Hey- you seem to have a really good heart. I live in California which has become a scum bag magnet- so thanks for the real Talk. Next topic:have you ever tried to start your VW (I have a 2000 gls turbo Passat wagon) and had it make a terrible sound, like electric shock? Or electric zapping? My Car... I’m crying
Mike, Thanks for the vid. I am doing a "ground up" resto on my '68 bug vert. I agree w/your "on a budget" modo. On the wire diagram there are numbers and colors, but they don't tell the gauge of the wire. I have 1 or 2 wires I should replace, but not the whole harness. Do I just guess on the gauge by the looks, or does VW have a gauge chart?
Bryan 212, on the wiring diagrams each wire has two numbers. One will tell where it connects (like 30), the other is a small number: 0,5 1,0 1,5 for example. That is the wire size in European sizing. To convert to AWG, Google The Samba, wire size conversion table, German mm to USA AWG. 0,5 is 20 AWG, for example. 2,0 is 14 gauge 1,0 is 16 gauge
@@TWIZTEDNATION mostly the fuses connection between them and the fuse holder. or a bad connection between the slip on connector throughout the circuit. Nothing really common try wiggling connections. I also use tarn x then rinse with water after right away
Would love a video that shows what to do when vw won’t turn over. The car. Had a new starter installed a few years ago when I drove it. It sat for a few years do to a dead battery. So put a new battery in and it doesn’t even try to turn over now. I have 6v back to starter. But beyond that I’m not real mechanical so not sure where to go from here or what to test. Help!!!
I have never owned a type 3 but I believe the wiring is basically the same. I would recommend wiring it to the hot all the time section because if you ever leave your radio on without the engine running you will burn up your points.
About the point burning up issue. After 35+ years of VW's (not shade tree,Independant shop and Dealerships) and numerous times the key was left on, nothing and I mean nothing has ever been damaged from a key on. All you find from a key on condition is the coil gets a bit warm. One thing we did find with the new Beetle. If we had a waiter customer some Service Advisor decided it would be a good idea to leave the flashers running to get people's attention. Leaving the emergency flashers on for a long period can damage the flasher in a new Bug.
Your skill and knowledge is worth something. You should setup a Patreon, PayPal, Bitcoin donation, etc. Plenty of people like myself would donate voluntarily for your help and time involved making these videos. They're invaluable!!! $5 (or even $1) per the 126,267 views would go a long way towards your retirement! Set it up and you'll get a fiver from me for sure.

I pray to god this man got some monetization on these
Thank you for not charging, I don't have my project yet but I just like watching videos to know what I'm getting into
Super clean setup as intended. Im getting in to a 62 I just bought and man is it a rats nest.
I still have my original car from Highschool 21 years later. A 1960 Volkswagen Beetle.. haha
This is so clean compared to my frunk. Another project!
Hello, when your climbing, deep hills use, first gear very powerful
And back, to fourth gear.

Great video it’s hard to find anything exact for my 74 but this helps a ton.

Stupid question. The lead from the fuse box to the speedometer does what exactly
Great thank you giving you will receive.
Thanks Mike!
so awesome the old guy gave you a car.
Dude, my original spec dwg shows main light wires (white, yellow &grey wire) on the left side of the fuse box
on the diagram it shows the opposite. there is a drawing of the fuse block that is always looked at upside down.
Not paint stripper! Use either reducer or laquer thiner
paint stripper works great. sometimes lacquer thinner wont take the paint off.
ALWAYS THOUGHT THE SAME AS YOU ARE BUDDY! THANKS FOR EXPLAINING HOW ADS WORK ON TH-cam AND ALSO YOUR SKILLS
Hey what is the color of that beetle?
The only thing is, I would add "Bus" to your title!

Really enjoy your helpful videos. I have a question, what are the tiny numbers on the diagram? 0.5, 1.0, 2.5 etc.?
Size of the wire you should use.
Great video

Good looking Beetle. The turn signals are not working on my old 63 and I have a brake light out. Driving me nuts.

how to install generator warning light on project with vw engine?

I usually use 14 but some wires are 16 headlights and other things might be 12 or power 10.

very nice
Laquer Thinner works well for wiping paint off of wires
I use paint remover but yea that works too.

Great tips Thanks
Scotty Sanchez i couldn’t leave a comment but I could leave a reply- let this homie know that he has a really good heart:)
This same wiring set up apply to the '71 Super Beetle? Thanks for the video!
heck I think the rabbits follow the same basic wiring diagram. Yes but there are a lot more circuits on the super.
I'm trying to install a stereo in my 69 Squareback. Any tips on wiring stereo in a type 3?
I have never owned a type 3 but I believe the wiring is basically the same. I would recommend wiring it to the hot all the time section because if you ever leave your radio on without the engine running you will burn up your points.

Why does no one loom the wires so that u don't see all the individual wires??? Is it dangerous or something
Normally they are all covered with the carpet- I guess you could loom it all for clean look.
ady-B David would a brake sending unit for a 69 still work on one side of the brake lights and not the other?
very clean!!!!
Thank u for the tips!!!!!
Everyone shows New wiring..
Show figuring out old wires!
That's a nightmare 😳
thanks for the help
excellent partner I need to help a friend out GOD Bless.

Oh I can leave a comment (sorry Scotty)
I'm trying to find a complete wiring loom for my 74 transporter. Anybody know where I can find one of those?
have you checked wolfsburg west. they sell many of them for most models.
