    I've had it for almost a year now - and it's pretty awesome out here in rural New Mexico where getting Internet AT ALL is tough. At $100/month, it's a little cheaper than the microwave link I had before - but it's more than 10 times faster than the old service CLAIMED to be and about 50 times faster than the old system actually was.
    My only slight problem is that I do get occasional 1 to 2 second outages - and some internet appliances (such as my RoboRock vacuum cleaner) can't cope with that. It's not really StarLink's fault - when you access the Internet - you're supposed to retry when there is a loss of signal - and to keep retrying at longer and longer intervals for quite some time before giving up. But the PRACTICAL problems that this induces can be annoying. I use a VPN service to get to my workplace (I work from home) and their security system kicked in and cut me off if I had a >1 second dropout. Persuading them to relax this to a 5 second timeout was a pain - but they eventually did - and my problems vanished overnight. I'm still talking with the RoboRock service guys...I've tried saying "Shibboleth" (xkcd joke) - but I don't seem to be able to get this simple message ("retry more often before giving up") back to their software guys...so it's an annoying issue.
    I presume that as they add more satellites - that dropout will go away...but only time will tell.

    • @DirtyTesla
      @DirtyTesla  ปีที่แล้ว +13

      Yep, that's exactly what I experienced before and simply doesn't happen anymore. So I would assume your dropouts will go away over time. I just didn't think the service would improve this quickly.

    2022 has seen dramatic availability improvements because they launched and put the 2nd shell into service, this filled in any holes in the first shell of satellites (there were many). They are now working on the third shell. This drives exponential reductions in outages. The shells move differently, sliding over each other (hard to describe, the animations are clear). I have it as well, and yes so much better the last 6 months. My only complaint is upload bandwidth is not great, but they control the time allocation up/down, so can change it whenever they like.

    Thanks Chris, Starlink was also my only option in Tucson and was a Godsend. I recommended it two of my neighbors, who also signed up. I have had it now for about six months and, while it has been pretty dependable, my disconnects and video buffering have actually increased noticeably. Not sure if that's just increasing density in my cell or something else but those issues have definitely increased in the last month or two. Since getting Starlink, Verizon has also introduced 5gHome to my area so I do have a fallback if Starlink gets swamped.

    A major advantage for my setup is connectivity during power outages. Yes, I jabbed solar w/ bu batteries. My former cable service would go down during power outages in about 2 minutes. I suspect that was due to repeaters with minimal backup power.

Could not stream, ANYTHING, with download speeds peaking at 13 mbps and upload speeds never getting over 2 or 3 mbps ! We were paying about $ 120.00 a month for about 300 gig of data. It would just slow down to a crawl if you went over your data amount. We are definitely going to check into this ! Thank you so much for this excellent review, I have been waiting to purchase this due to lack of knowledge about the system. You cleared up everything....

    *I use Spectrum internet, the price is cheaper than starlink not by much. Starlink is about to come into my area, I just dont see it being worth it. I live in a small town, I just peformed a speed test via Wi-Fi the results - 491.51MBPS ping - 22ms. If starlink can compete with speeds like this I would consider it. The speeds are far superior when connected directly via ethernet obviously. I understand this is helpful in some places, don't consider this unless you are in extremely rural places. My town has roughly 3,500 people and the internet speeds are like this. I think this would only be beneficial to people that genuinely live in extremely rural places. An hour or more out of city limits, im not even considered inside city limits and have speeds like this. Granted I pay very close to starlink each month. If you're inside a town, the problem may just be you're not paying enough for high quality internet. If you're paying less than $100 a month this could be the reason your internet speeds are sub-par. We don't even have things like Taco bell, burger king, or many major fast food franchises. Our town doesn't even have a hotel lol. Im serious when I say don't consider starlink unless you're genuinely in the middle of nowhere.*

    I am on the waitlist for my Starlink set up since Sep and cannot wait for it’s arrival. I live in an internet black hole meaning the local Broad band service literally stops at the house next door 50yrds away on the Farm to Market road I live on and only option is Viasat or Hughes net which both are super slow, expensive, and give you a GB cap. The lesser of two evils was Viasat which currently costs me $200mo for 150GB and 100mbps speed; when you mentioned you pay $110mo with 1TB of data cap, I will take that all day compared to the rip off service I have right now. Viasat’s highest speed package is $300mo which gets you 200mbps and capped at 300GB data, once you use up that 300GB, you get throttled down or you can buy additional GB (which is a rip off as well) because with a family of 5, we would burn through 300GB in 20 days and you either buy more data, or you stay throttled down for 10 days. At one time I was paying over $400mo to Viasat to keep net usage the way our family was accustomed to using before moving here in the country from El Paso, TX. The reality of that 200mbps was really only 100 but once I added to mesh Orbi WiFi, I was able to get close to 180mbps on speed tests. Only con I figured out with the Orbi was that it was using 5GB of data a day alone to push a stronger signal.
    We had to have net to for our home security, so now until we get Starlink, we are on Viasats second to highest option package of 100mbps and 150GB data cap package at $200mo unfortunately.

I have Frontier DSL and looking at barley pushing 30mbps and my ping is decent around 12-20ms but with the 30mbps and couple device connected typically if I’m playing Warzone 2 I’ll get like higher latency issues from 150-200ms ping. Frontier is the only provider since I live in the country and frontier not having fiber out here until 3 years from now. When I go on the app it says I have to go on a waitlist? Do you know how long that waitlist typically is???

      If you set it up right, you can do nonstop 1080p with around 30gb per day. With 720p, you can get away with around 20gb per day. So well, neither should reach the 1tb in a month.

    Gaming on starlink is abysmal. It’s not the average ping that matters it’s those 150ms spikes and inconsistencies bouncing between 30 and 75. It’s so inconsistent that your brain can’t get use to it. Unfortunately in my area there is no good option the best I’ve found is my cell providers hotspot on my phone.

    I get it now! If you were to look up at the night sky and draw lines connecting all of the stars that you see to one another, it would create a giant net in the sky. Link the stars = Starlink, Net in the sky (Skynet). Starlink is the beginning of SkyNet. Musk is already well on his way to making his goal of building millions of Tesla Bots a reality. They will be controlled by SkyNet.
