I bought Starlink while driving through Mexico. It arrived at the campground in two days and cost $415 for the gear. Service costs $72 a month for North American coverage from Alaska to Panama. We are retired and use it for entertainment not work and find the service first rate. The clearer the north sky the better. It was very useful in remote mountainous areas of Guatemala and Mexico we drove through. Power consumption makes no difference to us as we have a large battery bank and our inverter is on all the time. Competition is coming so maybe costs won’t rise as fast as I fear. Wouldn’t be without it now.
Thanks Nate, I was worried about internet as I'm considering doing the same. Land is cheap in Taos, granted that is all there is, but it's pretty much the wild wild west out there. I've been with you since day one and have truly enjoyed you and Shannon sharing your journey with us, although I've missed a lot recently while recovering from a spinal fusion. I also appreciate that you include the negative aspects, not many vanlife channels do.
We've had Starlink for a year + on our off-grid property in Nevada. Works great besides the few hiccups here and there. My dad runs his business through it. He complains about the price too. I just see it as the cost of doing business. At $5 a day to do whatever you want/need to do on the internet in a rural place seems like a bargain.
Unless you used other satellite internet providers (slow speed, download are cap etc), then the price is justified. The amount of money SpaceX spent on getting where it is today, I don't think they will recover their cost anytime soon. Hopefully when more satellites arrives, speed becomes faster and more subscribers join, the price will drop or monthly bill won't increase as often. Amazon Kuiper will be a good competition for Starlink but until they can solve how to get rockets to orbit, I'm happy to pay for Starlink service.
Thanks, love ours. Took advantage of the $199.00 special so that helped. I use the mobile plan for rv’ing and pause the service when not using it. As for power consumption maybe look up the 12v conversion it will shave off some a/c power from the inverter.
I have heard that same comment about price. I know they ran a few sales on the dish itself in Canada, but the monthly price didnt go down. It is extremely handy but I know for some the cost is prohibitive.
My starlink at my home in rural NVT has been such a bonus. The cost actually went down to $90 a month from $110. What utility cost goes down in price these days?? Speeds are all over the place but at least 30mbps and it always works. Was thinking about using it on the road while in the rv but it says that when you change back to stationary location and not roaming you are not guaranteed to get your other plan back.
Hi Nate and Shannon what's going on I like the fact that you have each thing on Star link detailed I have a system called Radio Labs and it works wonderful out here in Montana I look forward to seeing how your system evolves
Good video! Does your Starlink system go into a power saving mode when activity drops off? Do you turn it on and off manually as power management? I did some quick calculations using short days in the middle of winter and applied the various practicality factors ending up with the need for almost 800 watts of extra solar panels. Again, that includes factors for circuit loss, charger/inverter losses and overhead, slight film on the panels, etc.
I know this is kind of an old video (in Starlink terms), but they are soon to be releasing direct-to-cell service. It will most likely solve your cell phone reception problems.
This is a timely video for me. I just ordered my star-link three weeks ago. It will be less expensive than what I now have. After watching this makes me wonder how much it will go up. Thanks for the information. God bless you and Shannon in all you do. Have a super week.
The biggest problem is trees, for mobile rv travelers. I now have a custom 250 foot Ethernet cable to extend, this way i can usually find open sky somewhere within 325 feet of our rv. 75 +250 feet. We were paying more than 150 a month when we had multiple cell coverages with our pepwave router. We also have a 12v dc connection for when we are dry camping. Larry
Their roaming service is $150/month, power draw is insane, speeds very inconsistent, and it's just another item to pack and unpack every time I move. And I'm already paying for two separate cell services regardless, and their combined coverage almost always ensures I have internet. Those were enough reasons for me to stop using Starlink.
dude man is creating a communication network for his ships, active 24/7 location monitoring and having the whole world in his palm asks us to think that it offers internet only for users
The best internet i get in a city in austria is 5-12Mb on a good day, since starlink has between 100-200Mb here, it is way better. I pay 45€ for the normal internet and 65€ for starlink.. if you consider that this is still at a starting point, i would say it will get better in the next couple of years.. it’s also made for remote locations and not moving around every few weeks.. yes the roaming service costs more, but if you’ve paid a service bill on your phone in the same area, you should know that you would have a similar price.. just that starlink is unlimited and mostly steady
And the most important problem imo is, that yoj pay 45€ for an adapter so you can out a cat cable in it.. I wanna connect my pc via lan and wifi makes no sense for a pc
The thing with Starlink is you have to remember this service has been in beta longer than it has not. That said this service will only keep going up because it is nowhere close to profitable. Plus the company has had the luxury of many govt subs so once that goes away ot will only make things more expensive. That said, you could not be more correct. It has no real competition. My workaround to not have to use Starlink was what you were doing with the booster. I found I could pull a good to great signal wherever I was using that in conjuncton with verizon. Enjoy the content and thanks for sharing.
About Starlink being "nowhere close to profitable". Feb. 10, 2023. "Starlink, SpaceX’s satellite-based internet service, recorded its first quarter of positive cash flow in 2022 and is on track to turn a profit this year, said SpaceX President Gwynne Shotwell." It's too expensive for me and unlike many TH-camrs, I can't write it off as a business expense.
They've spent billions so far. I live in Florida and I watch the launches often. And many of the satellites fail to work and they'll send up replacements costing extra millions. I usually keep up to date on launches in Florida what its purpose is for.
Another option: Visible has unlimited hotspot data and a nice $25/month rate. If a Verizon tower is within range, know that Visible is a Verizon reseller (and also owned by Verizon which is weird). Hope you continue to have good internet, man!
It's not weird... Boost Mobile used to be owned by Sprint and go off of Sprint towers... But is now owned by Dish Network. Cricket Wireless is owned by AT&T and use ATT Towers... Straight Talk is owned by TracFone which is owned by Verizon, however, they actually have partnerships with AT&T and T-Mobile and pretty much use any towers within range.
Yeah winds out in the desert can get very strong. I've got friends out in a desolate area of Mohave County and they've had some wind damage back in April plus they said the rains this year were something they hadn't had before. Maybe a good monsoon this year.
I live in Florida and I watch the rocket launches all the time. SpaceX are often sending replacement satellites for starlinks failed satellites that they had just sent up there! Everyone I know who uses their service complains. Some have said they don't get any service during bad weather.
So in summary...to pay an extra thousand dollars for a little itty bitty tiny bit faster service.... that sometimes goes down....and puts them back to RELIABLE 4g. Was it worth it is the big question. Peopel who pay more always say..oh its worth it!!!!! Easy for them to say$$$$$$

That's harsh! Get a booster instead. I watch storm chasers and having a booster makes a world of difference in rural areas.
What was the Upload Speedtest number? You cut it off a second too early to see it. The download speed is irrelevant if it’s not sequential.

Yes it's a big money loser so expect service costs to rise and quality to decline. I wouldn't bet on it existing in 5 years.
