Each time I see how "less far" Google is getting with their desktop modes and other advanced features, I become retrospectively confirmed that having gone with Samsung for years has been the right decision.
Honor Magic UI Desktop, Moto ReadyFor, even TCL had a more functional desktop mode for their first AR glasses. It's LONG past time to just bite the bullet and merge Android and ChromeOS.
@@SomeGadgetGuyI agree 100%. I would absolutely love to see every app available on Android be natively compatible out-the-box with the latest version of ChromeOS.
Yes you are right, so my next phone will be an S24 plus or ultra. I had been a while with Samsung in the early years ( Note 2 etc ) but was sick about their upgrade politics, but today this last issue is fixed ( 7 years on S24 ) so there is now reason to stay longer with the pixels.
That's what I'll be curious to see. Can we FINALLY start bridging Android and ChromeOS. Like, there's no reason we couldnt run a proper Chrome browser from a phone when connected to another display.
@@SomeGadgetGuy don't we already have apps like kiwi for a decent desktop chrome browser? I use that on my Pixel tablet or am I missing some other context here?
Same with Huawei Desktop mode... that they don't even bother advertising 😂 Competition is good for everyone it seems :) I did like the menu pop up to drive the resizing through vs just expecting everyone to know the appropriate gesture. Kind of curious how long it will take for us to be able to just dual boot into windows ARM
Not that they couldn't get it accomplished but it may have to do with all the different shapes and sizes of Android devices and it wasn't originally accounted for in material design. It's been there for a while in many brands so I wonder if they have to do it in a different way to avoid any already filed copyrights in several different markets. Like apple suing another company (maybe HTC) bc clicking a phone number in text opening the phone app automatically was the same as how they did it. It gets crazy with the laws sometimes.
Fr and thats a older device Samsung has improved dex a lot in the past 5 years it's so good and I love it I honestly can't go back to a phone without a desktop mode 😂
These improvements are going to make the Fold experience so much better, one of my biggest complaints with the fold is that the multitasking features suck compared to the ZFold. That being said, they really need to bring video out to the Fold too :(
Considering a lot of the older pixels also support USB 3, it'd be nice if google lifted this intentional lock unless it's on a hardware level which I don't think is the case.
Sadly, as much as we've been able to test, it is a hardware issue. There are ways around it with display port adapters, but the ease of "plug directly into a monitor and go" is only available on Pixel 8 and up.
There's literally no reason why Android Desktop Mode, Android tablet, and ChromeOS all cannot be converged together. Not only it saves time in code development, it can also avoid fragmentation by creating separate UI and UX for different devices. Microsoft still got the right idea all along with Continuum for Windows 10 Mobile.
@@farishanafiah8461 Google can go one step further by converging both Android and ChromeOS altogether. I still find it funny that Android never has GNU support, while the likes of Manjaro Phosh and PureOS can easily let you install any GNU Linux desktop sofware on phones and use it on secondary display through Desktop Mode.
Here is an idea that I think you should try with your Pixel 8. I have an LG G7 running on LineageOS and it does support video out. Desktop mode is broken on that phone just like on your Pixel device. But instead of using Forced Desktop Mode I am just mirroring the display and using SecondScreen app to fix the aspect ratio so that the black bars don't show up. Now I am using Taskbar app but I think if you mirror your screen, you won't need the taskbar app (as seen in the video that Android now has a solid taskbar for windowed apps). Now here is the interesting part, once the SecondScreen app changes the aspect ratio and orientation of the screen, Android assumes that you are using a tablet. So in theory, you will get the same interface on your phone and monitor screen as you get on your Pixel Tablet.
A very interesting update. I wish they would just bite the bullet and make it functional. We all know they could do it in one update and improve all of android. Basically just plug and play any device. Great video. Also out of curiosity why not Twitter? I can get socials fatigue (really). But your reach would definitely be greater there. All the best.
9:36 to get the tablet interface on your pixel or maybe any phone you must change the smallest width option in developer options to like 622 Don't forget what it was at first though because the screen is going to be tiny I recommend video out for this not just using your phones screen
Yea really hoping to see this come to phones. And would love the floating windows to make it to the Fold. It has more powerful hardware than the tablet and a pretty big dcreen for only doing 2 things with PiP and vhat bubbles.
Funny how my V60 and G8X can handle some of this functionality way better than Google, even when both phones are 4 and 5 years old at this point. Love the idea of desktop modes on phones. I would love that experience from Screen+ but on a OnePlus device (at the moment, I would love a OP12... But if it is for desktop mode, I'll go Motorola then with the Edge 50 Ultra), but if Google makes it available for their phones, I'll consider it
It's the BIG question for me. If this is an Android feature, and not just a pixel feature, it might make sense to stick with OP for the more powerful "computer".
I just use Dex on my s21 It's cool that Google is trying at least I change the smallest width on my pixel 8 to get that tablet like interface It's good when I'm checking emails, organizing files or using telegram. That's about it
i have this idea that google could sell a "hollow laptop" that has battery, keyboard and screen, but the processing is made by docking your pixel phone on it, and it just become a regular Chromebook
chromebook,,, Lenovo Duet 3 ,,, Tablet ,,, 10 years of support ,, Android 13 ,, Desktop chrome browser & Linux . and would you believe in tablet mode it can do all this and drive usb c monitors too
Meanwhile all the Samsung tablets and phones can and have been doing this for years so why is it still, beta for Google? I mean apple is always slow but google?
I waste so much money on many Android tablets. Meanwhile, the iPads I’ve bought are still in use several years later and with deeper integrated personalisation than I can get with my Android devices. Google really needs to up its game in this space, but from the track record this is an area that Google aren’t bothered about. A Google pixel 9 fold looks great but I’m not paying that much for a phone tablet.
Hmmmm.... My Xiaomi Pad 6 does floating windows and monitor out by usb-c since i got it ! This is something special only for Pixel Users. 🤣 Only thing i realy wish to see is a real extended monitor insted of just mirroring it.
Really good to see this on a clean Android OS, Samsung bloat their tabs and phones with a much useful and flowless desktop features. This one however is like iPadOS.. Hopefully Google will nail it faster than Apple.
Gone are the days of touchwiz. Ever since OneUI samsung has been the go to for premium android phones and tablets. They also have a more cohesive ecosystem that is closest to Apple's.
Doesnt mean anything. Game mobile suck still not have simple game decade on pc, app meh some even not support tablet there is a reson surface have high price

None of the android browsers support multi profiles or containers, this is one of the biggest dealbreakers for me.
Just use two similar browser apps then.
