Something I just noticed, after rewatching the movie recently, is that when the jets fly over, when Ray is yelling for Robbie to slow down, the lead jet is an F-22. When this movie released, it was in 2005, which also so happens to be the same year that jet was adopted into service. A great detail, that shows just how desperate the military was, throwing literally anything they had at the aliens.
Love the difference in perspective cause of the hill. Military knows they're only delaying it, Civies think they're pushing them back only to see their hopes. literally, go up in flames.
What makes this scene even more emotional is the fact that the soldiers knew that they couldn’t destroy the Tripods as the have those shields. They knew that they were going to die. They were just using everything they got to slow down the Tripods so the civilians could have their chance to escape.
I think it's really cool to see tanks and armored vehicles advancing rather than retreating. Even though they know they will die, they fight to the end for the citizens.
They actually don't know that they will die. They know there is high chance they will die but the commanders aren't sending the soldiers in knowing that they will die. These soldiers did not die in vain because in the later part of the movie the military continues the fight now with the knowledge that conventional weaponry does not work because the tripods have force fields around them. Prior to the battle commencing the army didn't know about the force fields, and unfortunately it was too late for these units to retreat as they were vastly outclassed in technology and in the thick of battle. However, the information relayed to command through communications was vital in preventing a full on frontal assault from being attempted again until a strategy was formed to combat the force fields.
That one line from the soldier hits hard after the "No effect" "Rodger no effect on target" "Our mission is to delay then til the refugees get to safety now keep firing"
@@colinhubble6667 There was a documentary not too long ago about our chances of defeating something like this if it actually were to happen and believe it or not, our best bet is to use guerilla tactics. Well, if you are fighting against invaders from another world that have fucking big ships with three legs and anti-anything, shields that shoot laser beams at all hours and on top of that they kidnap innocent humans to make them blood smooties and be the fertilizer for their new world. .. you don't have many options, so let's say the military did their best....

This scene was by far the scariest scene in the entire film. The military unleashing the full might of humanity's wrath, short of nuclear weapons, and it dose absolutely nothing but slightly slow down the threat. To think there could be something out there in the vastness of the universe that could have such power is alarming to say the least. This scene is highly existential in that regard.

Would be fun to see a version where the tripods had the same capabilities in the book. Overwhelming shock and awe, but pretty vulnerable to heavy kinetic weapons. Just imagine the initial chaos then confusion as we blow them tf out with armor as they struggle to melt ceramic plated steel.

Fun fact: In this scene it’s the Marines. You actually don’t see the Army until later in the film. At the end when the tripods are falling, it’s the Army National Guard killing them off.
That's usually how it would go. Marines and Army doing what they can until Guard and Reserves are able to get into gear and out. Add in the civilian militias led by veterans and police units there would be a lot of dakka going out, but against energy shields it's useless
It's a joint attack in this scene. Some Marines and some Army. They don't explicitly say it, but if you look at the different uniforms (MARPAT vs BDU) you can tell.
@@tideatmilehigh2727 Nah buddy, that was all Marines(with a side of Navy). The time period the movie takes place in, the Marines were still transitioning patterns. You can see a lot of them wearing mixed gear too(M81 Woodland/MARPAT Woodland). When there’s a transition to a new pattern, the new gear kind of trickles in to each unit. Also to factor in the vehicles, there’s Humvees, LAV’s(LAV’s being exclusive the the USMC), and Abrams tanks. Couple that with the AH-1(Also exclusive to the USMC) variant attach helicopters and the F-18 Hornets, it’s very clear that this whole scene is depicting a combined arms assault by a Marine mechanized infantry unit supported by tanks, a Marine light attack helicopter squadron, and a Navy strike fighter squadron. It’s a long stretch to assume that there’s any Army presence in this scene. I’m an eight-year Army infantry veteran. Joint operations between Army and Marine Corps do happen from time to time, but it’s very rare. This scene is textbook USMC/Navy stuff. It’s basically a Marine Corps recruiting ad gone wrong.
@TheUnseenSoldier I was Marines from 2014-18. I won't swear to it, but I think our uniform transition was completed by 2004. However, that may have been for AD folks only, and I assume the unit depicted in this scene are probably reservists. Regardless, I remember reading some behind the scenes stuff that said this was a joint attack. For the longest time I thought it was an army/natty guard unit until I noticed some of the guys wearing MARPAT. And believe it or not, when I went to bootcamp in 2014, I still remember running into gear that had the classic woodland/BDU pattern lol. I am in the chair force now, and our MOP suits are still BDU patterned.
@TheUnseenSoldier That's also interesting about the LAV bit. I was a POG and thought our LAVs are hand-me-downs from the army (like most of our stuff is lol)
I love how the entire build up to this scene was like “where’s our military, where humanity’s best” Then it goes into a full on force of everything we got, only to be obliterated by the tripods that weren’t even phased! Truly an amazing film!
Yep, the whole movie we didn’t see much of the military at all. FINALLY we see them in action, throwing literally everything at the aliens, and we have a brief glimmer of hope …and then it’s all over in less than two minutes. Humanity’s bravest and strongest obliterated in mere seconds. Hope is dead.
That shot of Rachel at 1:33 really shows how incomprehensible all this fighting is to her. She's too innocent to understand why this is happening, and she seems to find the military just as frightening and confusing as the aliens. It makes a good point of what war looks like through a child's eyes.
3:01 Everyone there knew they were going to die, but they were out of time. They just charged the aliens in a last ditch attempt to hold them back. There’s a whole other story that could be told about this fight beyond just what one family experienced.
with the tripods so close, retreat would have likely meant death anyways. So the only good thing to do now is to fight to delay, or even charge in to get within the sheild perimeter. Some comments also state that this failed assault lead military leadership to realize the shields were present and conventional weapons would have no effect. The mission went from an attempt to stop/destroy the tripods in their tracks, to holding them back as long as possible for civilians to get away
@@ItsVega94 they knew about the shields long before this I think. At least people that encountered and battled with them previously did. This battle took place on night 2 or 3 of the invasion. The news reporter who Tom Cruise met near the beginning of the movie said that she was attached to a National Guard unit and they couldn’t touch them because of the shields. Plus they don’t seem to be focusing on or very good at targeting aircraft. Jets are flying by them pelting them with missiles, so they definitely had reports of the shields prior to this battle. That’s just my theory though. What I actually don’t understand at all though is why the hell are they sending in ground forces and infantry against these things? Artillery I can understand but they had infantry with basic weapons doing absolutely nothing. Lives lost for no reason.
The music from this scene, scored by the legendary John Williams, is so incredible. 1:32, what a POWERFUL moment. The music is contrary to the scene. A lot of chaos, running, explosions, etc. and Mr. Williams scored the scene with a slow, lament piece. The choir was incredible in this moment with no vibrato, making the music sound less human, and more like the soul of someone getting anguished.
This is part of the reason why I think the concept of an Alien invasion might be cooler than a zombie apocalypse. We actually fight with everything we’ve got to hold back the invaders, where as in zombie apocalypses, it seems like the military is mostly useless.
@@Odd_Kriegeri just came from a comment on the mist ending saying war of the worlds was a good example of the military being useless against an alien invasion.

This is a very emotional and underrated scene. I know it's a slightly silly film about Martian tripods but it feels like a wider metaphor about humankind's last, futile stand.
It ain’t it silly after the whistleblowers announcements to congress, our military has nothing to counter the observers, imagine what their fleet has , emp our hardware on a scale we can’t imagine
Damn. Just seeing the military throw everything they have to try and hold back the tripods while the refugees get to safety… gives me chills. There is so much fucking firepower in this scene and it does nothing. The the tanks, humvees, apaches, and planes unloading into the tripods knowing they are gonna lose. The chills man.

seeing the military fire EVERYTHING they have at the tripods knowing they aren't doing anything to them only delaying them still gives chills, even the music when the Apaches come in gives goosebumps. Though if you were an alien from another planet wouldnt you study everything there is about it? Wildlife, plant life, maybe diseases we don't know about, blood also. Since that was their downfall, not studying enough about humans and our planet
Strongly agree here. If such advanced aliens with their tripods decided to destroy humanity, they would do that leaving us zero chance. The only reason they lost is the plot, because people prefer good ending over realism.
I love how this scene is set up. At the beginning the sound of explosions and travelling projectiles is overwhelming, deafening at that. We see the Military roll in en masse as they fight against the tripods who are hidden over the crest of the hill, we even get a classic 'Alien Invasion Movie' scene where the jets suddenly fly in to turn the tide of the battle, and soon after even more helicopters arrive and unload everything they have at the Tripods. In most other movies, the jets sweeping in alone would have been the turning point where the humans realise they CAN win against the Martians, but not here. After all of the effort the military went through to buy time, it amounted to about a minute and a half of struggle before being wiped out, and I especially love how it ends with the wide shot as the remaining few soldiers fire whatever they have left at the tripods. Really sells how the Tripods wiped the floor with the soldiers and how little there are left.
This is my favorite scene of the movie. The bravery displayed by the troops really gets to you. They know they can't win, but they keep pressing forward.
This scene is terrifying and poignant but the most harrowing part is around 3:04 when all of those soldiers go over the top into certain death; if you look closely some of them don’t even have weapons. They’re just running down the hill without any means of protection, desperately attempting to give the civilians even 1 extra second to escape the coming slaughter. I genuinely got misty-eyed when I caught that little detail. How beautiful, how horrible
Yeah I’m pretty sure those were the amped up stupid civilians who thought they were gonna charge down the hill with the army and beat the tripods up with their bare hands
Actually there were a few soldiers without weapons which makes this more accurate because if something like this happened our logistics would be first to fail on the on slot of war against man and maggots.
It’s interesting cos at 0:24 you can see the first aircraft is possibly a F-18 or a F-18,aircraft primarily used by the navy onboard carriers, but at 0:26 you can see an A-10 warthog fly by,which is utilised by the airforce primarily for CAS.This combined with the fact that the soilders are wearing two distinct two forms of uniform(noted from goggles)shows that the US military is now just throwing everything it has at the Martians
The contrast in this scene between humanity’s collective might as a species, versus the individualistic traits of humans. We see the culmination of humans’ technology/intelligence in the military’s entire strength being thrown at the aliens, then the way the camera pans down in the same shot to see one human, a father pleading with his son, desperately trying to save him from almost certain death. Then the impossible choice he is faced with, having to choose to leave his son to to a fate that he willingly accepts, in order to save his daughter who needs him now more than ever. One of the best scenes in cinema history in my opinion.
Other scary thing to consider is that guy at the end of the video, he was good and nice enough to help them, and give them shelter in his home, his basement. Yet that person started to become crazy and a looney, dangerous, so the father realized it was that guy or him and his daughter, so he ended killing him. Tough!
This whole scene ESPECIALLY when the helicopters show up is one of the best scenes in a movie ever made. I get goosebumps every single time i watch it. And this movie is one of the most underrated movies ever.
strider is in Halflife and its pretty fckng easy to kill, which is 6 shots of classic rocket launcer. These ones are fckng huge and have god dmned shields😢
I always remember watching this scene as a child and getting pure goosebumps from it. This film seriously gave off a certain aesthetic others could not achieve.
I've never actually thought about this before but does anyone else noticed the burned humvees were PERFECTLY centered? It means the soldiers inside probably were retreating when they got zapped. The commanding officer (the soldier on the radio who orders the final charge) probably saw that and knew it was pointless to try escaping the tripods so he decided to give a final attack.
@@ssww3 Oh yeah, in the movie it's just whatever happens to be on hand. I just meant that in the making of documentary they had actual Marine corps officers and enlisted guys playing as the military in this scene rather than extras dressed up as marines.
Agreed. This one movie was really two: you had the alien invasion moments you wanted to watch, and the family drama moments you wanted to skip through. It's why this War of the Worlds isn't very well received. Most people only love half of it.

they may survive the war to see the tripods eventually fall but witnessing scores of your brothers in arms and civilains dying to the tripods will haunt them till they die
My Nam vet neighbor who passed away years ago told me this movie is very accurate. In fact he told me if this were real, the men would in fact run into the battle to die if it bought civilians even a few seconds to run. And he was told in unofficial ways that the military does have plans for this scenario. "If we can't win, we try to take them with us".
Does anyone else think that the camera work and shots in this scene were really well executed? Especially the sudden close-ups of the jets. Gives the scene a lot more power and magnitude in my opinion, along with the angles shown during the ferry attack scene when the tripods were coming over the hill
They dumped enough rounds and rockets into those tripods to level a city block, yet all it did was buy time for the civilians. Spielberg's movie did a damn amazing job of making us feel that we humans are powerless vs these scary aliens, just like Welles did in the 30's.
#1 best movie scene I would say. There was such a diverse use of vehicles and the uniforms and actions they made were very accurate. Pretty cool to see the military put a strong show of force.
I suppose you have to think about the fact that there is basically no front line in this war. It's as if there's one tripod for every square mile of the country and it doesn't matter what direction you go because you'll still be very likely to encounter the Martians. If you stay near military units then you might feel like you have some semblance of protection. Also, a lot of those civilians weren't aware that the military hadn't been dealing any damage to the tripods at all. Some of them probably wanted to see humans getting back at the aliens for once or even try to help the military in whatever way they felt they could. I still find it strange to see so many helpless people running towards an intense battle but that's probably the best explanation for why they did it.
There were some people who would go watch the battles of the American Civil War when the war first started, but they would immediately regret their decision
You've already lost the people you love most. You're on the brink of not wanting to live at all, and you're sure that you will die nonetheless. Any chance for vengeance I imagine you take.
And the funny thing is without the shields we would've absolutely beat them. Now at the end of the movie we have their tech and many years later they'll have to contend with a vengeful race eventually finding where they are and coming for them
No. The aliens invaded us because Mars was no longer habitable, per the novel. If their motivation is the same in the movie, then everyone on Mars is already dead.
The novel ruled. The British army fought and were able to destroy a handful of tripods and cylinders before the Martians deployed their poison gas. R. I. P. HMS Thunderchild.
You do realize it's completely different iteration? British army and HMS Thunderchild wouldn't do shit against these tripods. 2005 movie does far better job at conveying that there isn't really any war but rather one sided slaughter.
@@thesupercactus6401 Which is subjective take, as based on such logic Battle of Los Angeles (2011 movie) should also be much cooler. Original novel power dynamic resembles situation when Great colonial Power attacks minor and underdeveloped nation. 2005 movie? It's more like humans overhunting certain animal species. Sure animal can by luck and desperation get one human by surprise, doesn't change whatsoever though that countless other of it's kind are butchered around for resources or for fun, just like in 2005 movie Tripods exterminate humans left and right.
@@ReichLife I actually quite liked battle Los Angeles, it was a very refreshing departure from the typical alien invasion, which was just a complete one-sided stomp. Instead you had a much more straight up conventional fight. I’m getting real tired of the deus ex machina or McGuffin being the only thing that can stop in alien invasion. I’m also really annoyed. They never showed an attempt to focus their fire on one of the tripods, and just try and bring it down through sheer force. If they were able to knock down at least one or two conventionally, it would’ve been a bit more true to the original novel.
@@hummerskickass You do realize Battle Los Angeles had literally same deus ex machina or McGuffin? It was command ship. Overall for me BLA was wasted potential. Movie has great opening+helicopter arrival but outside of it is painfully forgettable. Aliens looks like creatures of garbage dump rather than other wordly creatures, who are also painfully dumb if water is theirs' needed resource (I think only aliens from Signs were dumber). That's why I put 2005 War of the Worlds on pedestal. Tripods are among the best designed alien creations there are, aliens themselves also look alien enough, they even have they're unique personality. Clearly inteligent, curious but also without empathy. Theirs' motive also is solid. They want Earth cause it's already habitable world and they want to terraform for theirs' specific needs. And them enacting complete one-sided stomp is perfect for irony of the title. It's not really war, it's extermination. Also fact how seemingly invincible they are, helps with ending when they are defeated by Earth Nature itself. Hubris and overconfidence in theirs' technological supremacy, led to theirs' downfall.
This scene is existentially haunting because it’s like humanity’s last stand, and even the dialogue proves the military knows they have no chance. This movie was so fucking good. Enough said.
This scene gave me extreme anxiety as a kid whenever we watched it. The hopelessness and weakness of the fact we as human beings are pathetic to a superior race if they ever came here.
the military throwing everything we have at those tripods so our civilians can have a chance to escape. ❤️ this scene gives me the chills, and makes me wanna fight for my freedom
Freedom? No. No, I fought in a Marine Corps that said it was fighting for freedom, and my people threw it all away. I would not fight for freedom. Virtue, though? Yes. And for the future of my people.
I always loved this scene in this movie, literally humanity unleashing everything it has against the invaders (except nuclear bombs), we see all types of ground and air combat vehicles in action (the most notable being tanks, fighter jets, combat and helicopters), that squadron of helicopters all firing so many missiles at once is so epic, however, the scary thing about this is that the soldiers claim that in the end they are only delaying them so that people can escape and take shelter, damn, If it were not for the shields, the tripods would have been in serious trouble. The human army is rarely effective in combat against aliens with machines in science fiction movies. It's not on topic, but imagine that somewhere in the universe there exists a race with weapons power that would be able to pulverize humanity and its army in just months or weeks, infinite space is terrifying.
man this scene is the one that stays with me all time. as a kid i liked it because cool army guys fighting. but as an adult i grow to appreciate the sacrifice the military gives.
Whats a great touch is that this is a national guard battalion. The movie was filmed during the BDU ACU phase. You can see a few guardsmen with mismatched equipment which would really happen with such a sudden call to arms.
No, but seriously, what did Robbie think he was going to accomplish here? Did he really think he was going to run up to one of the tripods and take it out with a punch like he was Saitama?
It was an important part at this stage of the film to have a scene like this. To show the most powerful military in history throwing their all at the Tripods and failing to make even a dent. It takes any hope for a conventional solution or defense against this invasion and squashes it.
Nah, Independence Day lets you see the fighting. This is like the 2014 Godzilla - the directors mistakenly thought we'd rather see the expressions on people's faces than the gigantic battles raging.
@@adammclaughlin845This is far closer, minus the ending, to how it would go than Independence Day, which is a bit childish in comparison. This is darker and more realistic… as realistic as an alien invasion movie could be… minus the way they’re defeated

In retrospect, the "NO EFFECT" message probably played a pivotal role in getting US High Command to divert resources to other areas, potentially saving more manpower and munitions for guerrilla warfare. That I guess explains how there were still soldiers giving the Martians hell by the end of the film, while decked out in their gear.
If this was in Robbie's POV, I can imagine the horror and guilt, believing his father and sister might had died. Probably when he got home, Robbie was probably get chewed out by his mother.
I've always wondered how nukes would have faired against the tripods. Would their seemingly impenetrable shields endure? Or would that finally be the weapon that could break their backs.
@@ReichLife But in independence day they launched nukes against a massive city destroying ship, these tripods you would think would have weaker shields in comparision.
@@scoman73 It's SF and technology without any established rules. Maby those shields wouldn't be able to withstand nuke, or maby nuke would be like any other explosion to them, like a annoying fly for us. At the end of a day shield alongside tripods themselves are plot devices for specific story of alien, overwhelming force eradicating humanity, with main focus being given to small family in middle of all it. For the sake of this story, in my headcanon nukes wouldn't work and I don't see any reason for that to be immersion breaking. Honestly, mines in my eyes would have better odds, given it's not certain the shield would protect tripods legs and itself from below.
Considering that the movie mentions a reference that a few of them were killed in Okinawa by the Japanese it’s possible their is a flaw to their shields.
He wanted to fight with the Army. Earlier in the film when they emerge after a plane crashes, you see Robbie looking at the destruction pissed off. He saw people fighting back and wanted to be part of it, wanted to bring pain to the aliens.
He heard the call to fight. Even if it meant helping with some 'miniscule ' logistical need. The young man was motivated to action. It happened after pearl harbor, 9/11 in the us, and more recently in ukraine. It is hard to watch as bad things happen to good people. Some are motivated to enter the fray and help others, some are more flight responders.
the thing thats scariest about this scene is that, this is the united states armed forces, the most professional army on the planet, the strongest military force, are being walked over by an alien invasion, now imagine whats happening in countries like morocco or thailand, who's militaries are significantly weaker.
As Moroccan I can say that our Army wouldn't even React they will just try to protect the King and when the king will be safe they will fuck off to the Mountains and Hide over there
My favourite thing about this shot is the way the camera pans off ray and robbie as the tank rolls up the hill, its just a really subtle way of showing that in this exact moment, the two main characters in the centre of the shot, having their own moment of conflict have become secondary to the actual conflict that's just erupted around them, like theirs did when robbie ran off
I have tried to deconstruct this scene in my mind before, to try to understand some of the parts a little better. Spielberg is not an idiot, he would not film something like the humvees on fire coming over the hill without some sort of implied scenario. Because seeing them all come back down the hill in formation while on fire doesn't really make a lot of sense, right? Well a couple moment later, you can see the tripods are using an energy beam/ray to attack with. The tripods probably zapped across all the military vehicles in a continuous line, which set them all on fire. Once they were on fire, not only did it most likely kill all the gunners, but the outer flames make it impossible for any other guys inside to man the gun. So at that point, a retreat was most likely called, and that is why you see them all come back down the hill in a united fashion. The way that scene was filmed, it can be heavily implied that a live man is in the driver seat of every humvee. You can see the tripod laser beam sets everything on fire where ever it is aimed, because it is a beam and not a projectile. It would make sense that some of the military vehicles could possibly withstand it, even if just for a very brief amount of time.
There's concept art for this scene that shows what is happening on the other side of that hill. It's every bit as tragic and chaotic as you can imagine although if I remember correctly, I think they managed to buy fleeing civilians some time using detonator mines which briefly slowed the tripod advance. After that, the soldiers were doomed.
I don't understand Robbie's thought process in this scene what did he think he was going to accomplish by staying there and watching the military get completely demolished or was he thinking of joining in to what he probably thought was helping the military "fight" the aliens when they knew.that they were only going to delay the aliens advance very temporarily and still get destroyed for it and in the end their sacrifice didn't even matter
He wants to help. You can see it very clearly in the ferry scene a little earlier than this one, when the ferry gets capsized and the Tripods start scooping people out of the water. When the three of them get to a safe spot away from the river and look back, Rachel and Ray look more scared/shocked, but Robbie's baring his teeth. He's pissed. He's at the age where, historically, he'd have been conscripted to fight in the military. He's a teenager. He's in the prime of his life: old enough to pick up a gun and follow orders, but young enough to march for 12 hours without his body buckling and collapsing. Also, a bit more relevantly, his body is surging with testosterone. It's upsetting to see thousands of people dying all around him and hear his baby sister screaming and crying with fear nonstop. His instinct isn't to run away - it's to fight. Oh, he stands no chance against a 60-foot alien war machine? Doesn't matter. Instinct isn't always logical. In fact, instincts are pretty much always the exact opposite of logical. That's why Robbie's being a shithead. He's a rebellious teenager in possibly the highest stress scenario imaginable, so he's running far more on emotion and hormones than he should be.
1:16 i never noticed that these guys are marines and soldiers. (Joint operation) Very cool to see 2005 marine marpat woodland with the M81 Interceptor Vest
They were probably, somewhat, leftovers thrown together for this battle.. alot of battles were happening that we didn't see in the movie, they probably took what they could muster and sent them to help the refugees
I like to think a Colonel stood atop a Humvee to give the men the last speech before right before the scene started, someting along the lines of they no longer fight for a nation but for humanity. The only battle worth dying for type of speech
This is how an alien invasion would go down. Can you imagine a modern human army fighting one from say 100 years ago? It'd be an absolute massacre. Humanity vs. aliens with tech centuries or more ahead of us, we'd have no chance
It wouldn't go down as cool as youd think. You'd prob just send spec ops to passionate key figures and the war is over. Likewise, aliens wouldn't bother going themselves, they prob just engineer a virus to kill us or sumn
the aliens (since they would need to be a type 2+ civilisation to even reach our planet in the first place) would most likely just crash several thousand asteroids into our planet from all over there are 2 other options orbital bombardment they use alien ships to fire down onto the planet or they use the weather to obliterate the earth, tsunamis, tornados, volcanoes, etc
I'm pretty sure that the weapons used from the 1920s could inflict a decent amount of damage on a modern Army. The biggest disadvantage of an old fashioned Army vs a modern one is that the modern one would be one step ahead due to better surveillance technology.
RIP brave soldiers that desperately charged the Aliens for trying to delay them so refugees could escape. Knowing their weapons have no effect on target. Medal of honor to each one.
The shields of commander class tripods are way more powerful than the shields of warrior class tripods and harvester class tripods. If the military were fighting warrior class tripods in this scene then they could have stood a chance and take down a few tripods because they were literally throwing every single bit of destructive force at the tripods. The Martians wouldn’t even send harvester class tripods for obvious reasons. Since the Uberpods (commander tripods) were attacking, the military indeed stood absolutely no chance at defeating the Martian forces, they were in fact just delaying their advance… and they still died for nothing, literally all the civilians were running TO the fight instead of away. I mean with that much destructive force being pumped out of the US military in this scene, I think the people thought they were actually pushing back the Martian forces, they were hyped and hopeful to finally achieve victory. And then their hopes went up in flames… did I write too much?
Nah it makes sense man I never even thought about how selfish Robbie was being low key. I get he’s young but these men are dying so he can live meanwhile he wants to run towards it.
@@thefinalsolution247 I agree. The civilians were very arrogant, Not only because they’re endangering themselves, but because they’re hindering the military. They’re pulling soldiers out of the fight and making it hard to coordinate, Not only are the military fighting the Tripods but now they need to be careful not to accidentally hit or run over the civilians. You can literally see soldiers telling and forcing civilians to stay back instead of running towards the hill that the tripods are advancing on.

Something I just noticed, after rewatching the movie recently, is that when the jets fly over, when Ray is yelling for Robbie to slow down, the lead jet is an F-22. When this movie released, it was in 2005, which also so happens to be the same year that jet was adopted into service. What makes this scene even more emotional is the fact that the soldiers knew that they couldn’t destroy the Tripods as the have those shields. They knew that they were going to die. They were just using everything they got to slow down the Tripods so the civilians could have their chance to escape.
True heroes there.

And then there’s Robbie 🤣
I feel like there should have been a point where the military could drain the shields with nukes at least
The final charge was a failed attempt to get inside the shield range.
I think it's really cool to see tanks and armored vehicles advancing rather than retreating. Even though they know they will die, they fight to the end for the citizens.
Definitely man, I always found that scene kind of upsetting
Soldiers won't do this in real life thox maybe Russians and Ukrainians, not Americans. they only join the army for pay
It’s just to give them time to get out or further from the carnage
They fight to the end because if they left the battle they would be fired.

Tough!

In the 1953 version you actually see the military fighting the aliens. Wish there was less little kid drama and more of that.
Agreed. This one movie was really two: you had the alien invasion moments you wanted to watch, and the family drama moments you wanted to skip through. It's why this War of the Worlds isn't very well received. Most people only love half of it.
But to have an intelligent movie, you need to have both. By not seing, you can just imagine, and that's what the movie IS also about: Hope and despair
I find this like Armaggedon and Deep impact movies.

Skill issue
they may survive the war to see the tripods eventually fall but witnessing scores of your brothers in arms and civilains dying to the tripods will haunt them till they die
The original novel came in 1898
The scene - the lone soldier pointing up to the helos - the music - JUST AWESOME !

#1 best movie scene I would say. There was such a diverse use of vehicles and the uniforms and actions they made were very accurate. Pretty cool to see the military put a strong show of force.
Ever seen unarmed fleeting civilians rushing toward what's clearly a tense firefight in mass in any historical conflicts? Me neither.
Purely out of curiosity to see if the military was able to inflict any damage on the tripods to give them some sense of hope
There were some people who would go watch the battles of the American Civil War when the war first started, but they would immediately regret their decision
Movie logic
You've already lost the people you love most. You're on the brink of not wanting to live at all, and you're sure that you will die nonetheless. Any chance for vengeance I imagine you take.
And the funny thing is without the shields we would've absolutely beat them.
Now at the end of the movie we have their tech and many years later they'll have to contend with a vengeful race eventually finding where they are and coming for them

You do realize it's completely different iteration? British army and HMS Thunderchild wouldn't do shit against these tripods. 2005 movie does far better job at conveying that there isn't really any war but rather one sided slaughter.
@@ReichLife True, the 1896 novel tripods would get slaughtered today, they didn't have shields. But it made the novel much cooler

Freedom?

The actors were probably all National Guard, but I'm pretty sure that the characters in this scene are Marines.
No, but seriously, what did Robbie think he was going to accomplish here? Did he really think he was going to run up to one of the tripods and take it out with a punch like he was Saitama?
He wanted to know if the military was winning against the martians
great scene, love the military's effort
Why does the tripod at 3:35 look like its on fire?
It probably was when it took out a its sheilds to shoot. It probably caught flame, but it didn't do anything to it
It was very close to the ground that's why so we know they are fire resistant also
It was an important part at this stage of the film to have a scene like this. To show the most powerful military in history throwing their all at the Tripods and failing to make even a dent. It takes any hope for a conventional solution or defense against this invasion and squashes it.
If this movie was made in 2024, people wouldn't be running away or screaming. They would be standing there recording with their phones
The first scene where the tripod emerges literally has people standing around and even a guy recording on a camera lol
This blows Independence Day out the water. So much more emotion.

Up to your own headcanon given utter lack of definitive answer in movie. Personally I go with Independence Day version that shield would survive.

@@muffy469 The shield would surely have to fall, remember that the shield is not immortal
My favourite thing about this shot is the way the camera pans off ray and robbie as the tank rolls up the hill, its just a really subtle way of showing that in this exact moment, the two main characters in the centre of the shot, having their own moment of conflict have become secondary to the actual conflict that's just erupted around them, like theirs did when robbie ran off
I got little reliefs when I saw this military fight against the aliens because the whole movie was a scene where aliens are hunting humans.
I love how the marines/guard straight up dipped when the tripods came up from the ground 😹😹
What you mean they all died
The funny part is this movie portrays the military being competent enough to even mobilize fast enough to counterattack.
As if everyone in the army wouldn’t be more worried about their family and go AWOL the military would break up into small groups very quickly
